6:34 The problem with low cholesterol

Our bodies make 3000 mg of cholesterol each day! Babies are born with higher cholesterol, and our brain is composed of it. Cholesterol is vital for our cell membranes, hormones, vitamin D, bile salts, repair, and immunity.

Cholesterol isn’t a poison; it’s an essential building block! When a doctor measures your cholesterol, they’re measuring the cholesterol in the blood, not what’s deep in the cells.

There are two types of cholesterol: HDL and LDL. HDL carries cholesterol from the cells back to the liver for recycling, while LDL delivers cholesterol to the cells. There are two types of LDL cholesterol: small, dense LDL and large, buoyant LDL. Only an advanced lipid profile can discern the difference.

Small, dense LDL particles can cause inflammation and other problems, but this typically occurs only when your glucose is high or you have insulin resistance. If you’re on a low-carb diet and you don’t have insulin resistance, you’ll have more large, buoyant LDL. If you have high levels of large, buoyant LDL, it is not pathogenic!

Cholesterol is a building block of the precursor of cortisol, so if you’re dealing with stress, it could be the reason your cholesterol is high. Testosterone is also made from cholesterol, so if you take a drug to lower cholesterol, your testosterone levels may suffer.

If you have low cholesterol, you won’t produce enough bile. This will interfere with your ability to absorb fat, and you also won’t have enough raw material to make vitamin D.

High cholesterol is not a disease! If your cholesterol is high, it’s important to understand why. Consuming refined sugar and starch can raise your cholesterol and triglyceride levels. Inflammation and your body’s repair needs can also increase your levels.

Low cholesterol in older adults is associated with higher rates of death from all causes. Low cholesterol is linked to lowered immunity, depression, memory, and hormone issues. Cholesterol naturally rises in the winter and decreases in the summer. This could be related to your need for vitamin D.

I was on a low dose of Crestor 3 months. First month ok the second month started to get sore all over and tired. Wife said ya know you’re working 7 days a week. Third month I was hurting. Had a blood test and Dr office called me before I got home and said STOP taking statin. One liver count really high and the other liver count was low. About 2wks later I felt great. My cholesterol is over 300.

I’m 50, ripped, lean and I do keto with intermittent fasting. Each time I take a blood test, I get told that my cholesterol levels are very (too) high. Of course they are, because without glucose, the body needs to use cholesterol to transport energy. I’m in excellent shape, thank you very much.

    • @Drberg on February 18, 2026 at 1:38 pm

That’s awesome, sounds like you’re feeling strong and thriving. Thanks for sharing your experience. It’s great when you find an approach that works for your body and keeps you in excellent shape.

    • @lizafanelli3593 on February 18, 2026 at 3:19 pm

THAT’S awesome. I am 50 and in the best shape of my life but have genetic high cholesterol. I refused to take the RX pills. Unfortunately I use the injection with no side effects 😢 I am hopeful it doesn’t affect me in the future. I do get an advanced lipid test. My overall cholesterol was HIGH.

    • @sjg1249 on February 18, 2026 at 3:55 pm

Do you get asked if you’re diabetic too, since you have ketones? Or wonder why your triglycerides are low with those other “problems?” I heard that a lot before finding a doctor that was familiar with a keto diet.

    • @vinterskog on February 18, 2026 at 4:02 pm

@sjg1249 Nope. Prior to the blood test, I talked about my diet. So the doc didn’t get surprised, nor alarmed by the high cholesterol. Which means he’s not outdated either.

Love the enthusiasm! Sometimes the message just needs to be repeated so everyone hears it.

  13. @wmmarquez on February 18, 2026 at 12:45 pm

    Key Insights:

Cholesterol is vital and produced in large amounts by the body for essential functions.
LDL cholesterol has subtypes; not all LDL is “bad.”
Standard cholesterol tests do not provide sufficient detail to assess cardiovascular risk accurately.
High cholesterol often indicates physiological needs or metabolic conditions, not inherently a disease.
Low cholesterol is associated with significant health risks and increased mortality in older adults.
Dietary sugar/starch intake and inflammation are key drivers of cholesterol elevation.
Sunlight exposure and vitamin D synthesis are critical factors influencing cholesterol levels.
Statins, by lowering cholesterol, can interfere with hormone production and cellular energy.

  14. @ST78726 on February 18, 2026 at 1:03 pm

My cholesterol has been 243 since I was in college. I’ve never had a problem with triglycerides either.

  15. @juanvideofotos on February 18, 2026 at 1:19 pm

Statins are a crime to humanity.

    • @Loleeone on February 18, 2026 at 2:25 pm

My brother was on statins for 15 years and came down with what they called ALS. They discontinued his use of it and in 5 years he died a horrible death at 61.

    • @Drberg on February 18, 2026 at 2:39 pm

Hi! It’s best to completely avoid statins. Here is a video that explains why and offers natural alternatives 👉 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Db9rkEzKeJE

    • @stevelanghorn1407 on February 18, 2026 at 2:42 pm

Apologies. I just posted a comment about medications altering personalities. I was wrong! The drugs involved were NOT weight-loss meds. They were anti-Parkinson’s meds. Sorry for the gaff!

    • @juliehammond4105 on February 18, 2026 at 3:20 pm

@Drbergis it safe to just stop taking the statins? Or do you have to taper off of them?

    • @MadDog_Rules on February 18, 2026 at 3:34 pm

@juliehammond4105 Never stop taking statins cold turkey, it can have adverse side effects. Talk to your doctor first, tell them you are coming off them and want to know the safe way to do that.

  16. @TheFossilman2 on February 18, 2026 at 1:49 pm

Just had the doctor tell me my cholesterol was high so told him not worried in the least!!

    • @Drberg on February 18, 2026 at 2:18 pm

Hi! That’s a confident approach, staying calm and focusing on healthy habits is key.

  17. @KekeScottJa on February 18, 2026 at 2:30 pm

My mom and I have high cholesterol. It baffles me. We don’t eat processed foods, I hate sweets we don’t eat fatty foods and have good weight between 115-135 lbs at 5ft 5in. Ppl always think we are much younger than we were. The reason I’m baffled is bc I don’t know how we would reduce this high cholesterol bc there is nothing we can adjust in our diet in terms elimination. This video enlightens me

    • @ElizabethOConnell-c6k on February 18, 2026 at 3:24 pm

Cholesterol levels are similar by family. My family are all healthy and tend toward high (but light and fluffy) cholesterol. It is what it is. We are fine!

    • @Drberg on February 18, 2026 at 4:16 pm

Hi! Thanks for sharing. It’s great to hear the video was helpful. Sometimes cholesterol isn’t just about diet, and understanding how the body works can really clarify things.

    • @michelelindseth8250 on February 18, 2026 at 4:31 pm

There is a condition called familial hypercholesterolemia. You can get tests for that.

    • @5-Minutegeography on February 18, 2026 at 5:04 pm

@DrbergThank you Dr for your honesty and bravery. I’m a huge fan!

  18. @cooky_2076 on February 18, 2026 at 2:30 pm

Yep, used to get muscle aches and weakness on statins.

    • @Drberg on February 18, 2026 at 4:11 pm

Hi! That’s a common issue. Statins can cause muscle aches and weakness, so it’s often better to focus on natural ways to support heart health.

  19. @clearasmudyeah6083 on February 18, 2026 at 2:43 pm

Thanks to you, I reject the cholesterol reducing meds each time my Doc want me to be on it.
