Let’s talk about how omega-3 fats help support the heart and how to decrease the risk of sudden cardiac death and arrhythmias.

Health benefits of fish oil (omega-3 fatty acids):
• They are antiarrhythmic
• They are anti-inflammatory
• They trigger genes that can help turn off the fibrosis effect of the heart
• They are antithrombotic
• They support the endothelial layer in the arteries
• They can help make your cell membranes more fluid and less rigid

Omega-6 fatty acids are common in oils like vegetable oils and seed oils. These oils invade cell membranes and make them more rigid.

It’s crucial to have the correct ratio of omega-3 fatty acids to omega-6 fatty acids, which should be 1:1. The average person in the US has a 15:1 ratio of omega-6 fatty acids to omega-3 fatty acids.

Omega-6 fatty acids not only increase the risk of heart problems but many other health issues.

Omega-6 fatty acids also compete with omega-3 fatty acids. So keep in mind that the more omega-6 fatty acids you have in your diet, the less of an effect you will have from omega-3 fatty acids.

Foods high in omega-6 fatty acids:
1. Vegetable oils
2. Grain-fed animals
3. Grains
4. Nuts
5. Salad dressings
6. Mayonnaise
7. Hummus
8. Farm-raised fish
9. Restaurant food

Start increasing fish oils, especially cod liver oil, in your diet, include salmon and fatty fish in your diet, and avoid omega-6 fats to help support a healthy heart.

Regarding the 1:1 ratio, why are omega 3’s so essential yet found so little in foods other than seafood?

    • catitude4 on February 15, 2023 at 3:14 pm

That would be from the Jim Jones Juice.

They do say, prevention is better than cure, as well as finding a cure, I want to see some honest investigation of the cause, given the assertion, it is anything but the ????? , I can only assume this is the most likely, and can understand the reluctance to investigate.
But these as not numbers, they are peoples lives

I remember a couple of studies on longevity, from decades ago, which started with octagenarians and looked for what they did right – not just ‘lucky genes’ explanations. One of the repeated findings was ‘cook your own food from scratch, fresh vegetables in season’. Shop bought Black Forest gateaux for a treat only, and be sure to share so you only get one slice of temptation.

    • Agma on February 15, 2023 at 12:21 pm

The regular consumption of Olive Oil and Fish was another common theme for supercentenarians in Japan, Spain, France and Italy. There is growing evidence suggesting they protect Mitochondria and repair DNA. Diet is said to account for the prevention of as much as 66% of all cancers with lifestyle and exercise boosting that figure up to 75%. How long we live really is largely down to us.

It’s interesting that low omega 3 is associated with an increased risk of cardiac arrest, yet research (eg at the Smidt Heart Institute) has also found people taking high doses of 1g a day or more were at increased risk of AFib which is then a risk factor for stroke and sudden cardiac arrest. So seems there’s likely a sweet spot in the middle to keep the levels healthy and the ratios in balance.

  7. Sushila Baxter on February 15, 2023 at 12:33 pm

I have been following you for the last 6 months. I had high triglycerides, high cholesterol and the rest. I couldn’t take Statins as I would really get sick and uncomfortable upon taking them. From a triglyceride of 217, in 4 months it has gone to 95 and all the good cholesterol has gone to 70! My cardiologist is amazed at this!! I’ve been just taking these tablets!! Thank you Dr. Berg!!

    • VeraMarie Cano on February 17, 2023 at 3:09 am

@Sushila Baxter Thank you very much. I appreciate your response! Thank you.

    • Ermund Jakob on February 17, 2023 at 4:59 pm

      What is triglycerides

    • VeraMarie Cano on February 17, 2023 at 5:15 pm

@Ermund Jakob I copied this from Google: Triglycerides are created from the breakdown of dietary fat. The body can also make triglycerides from carbohydrates, especially when the diet contains an abundance of refined carbohydrates and sugar. When we ingest food, some of the calories that the body does not currently require are converted into triglycerides and stored in the body’s fat cells. In between meals, the body releases hormones to convert triglycerides into energy. When one eats more calories than the body can burn, triglyceride levels may rise. When a doctor tests a patient’s cholesterol levels, they will often check triglyceride levels.

    • Ermund Jakob on February 17, 2023 at 5:27 pm

@VeraMarie Cano is it bad or good

    • VeraMarie Cano on February 17, 2023 at 5:52 pm

    Fantastic post!
Last week I was immobilised by muscle spasms & cramps (physical exertion) – I starting taking Cod Liver Oil on day 1, by day 3 all symptoms of muscular pain had disappeared.
Many years ago I took Emu Oil on advice from an acquaintance that suffered (?) adolescent arthritis.
Unfortunately the Omega 9 the emu oil contained was far too high in proportion to Omega 3 & 6. Of course my nutritional GP alerted me to the effect of- as my symptoms were that of immense muscular & joint pain.Emu oil was quickly deleted from the supplement list.
    Thanks again for advice.

Which brands are the best cod liver oils in your opinion??

    • DJ on February 16, 2023 at 8:13 am

@Jennifer Hunt I could only buy Gold Cross , so had no choice! Maybe some unidentified filler oil in it- presuming it contains sthing worth taking- no adverse effects, as yet.

My doctor told me that I should follow a plant based diet and take statins, but I followed keto and fasting anyhow…for three years so far…and my A1C was 3.7 and more healthy than ever. My LDL was at the lower end of the healthy range and my HDL was right on the money. I think I need a new doctor.

Hi Dr. Berg. I watched a lot of your videos about skin and I’ve been following your tips and it worked out for me pretty well! I was wondering if you could make a video about bowed legs, I have suffered them from a young age, and it’s been acting up pretty bad as I try to walk normally. Have tried a lot of insoles and braces to mitigate the pain to no avail. Thank you!

Once bone development has been established through your teenage years the only meaningful cure is corrective surgery. Good luck.

Is there any chance you could go over researching farming cod fish in a way that it’s rich in omega 3? And only fed their correct foods in a healthy environment for the fish?
I find it really hard to find quality omega 3 since I can’t get yours. I get the one from zinzino but I’m not sure of where their fish is gotten from.

Which cod liver oil is good

  15. babytramp1 on February 15, 2023 at 2:46 pm

According to your recommendation, I have been using vitamin D 10000i.u. and K2 100mcg for a long time. In 5 ml of cod liver oil (this is recommended on the packaging) there are: 9,500 i.u. of vitamin A, 1,950 i.u. vitamin D, 695 mg EPA, 415 mg DHA and 445 mg quinones (K/E/CoQ). Is this amount of vitamin D in the oil enough?

    • I'm happy on February 16, 2023 at 3:39 am

Omega-3 fatty acids are derived from food. The body cannot produce this acid on its own. Fish oil contains 2 omega-3s called docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) and eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA). Food sources of DHA and EPA are salmon, mackerel, and shellfish (clams, oysters, crab). Some nuts and vegetable oils contain another omega-3 called alpha-linolenic acid (ALA).

  16. Gawaniponygirl on February 15, 2023 at 3:23 pm

How much omega 3 can I consume on a daily? I started supplementing with fish and quickly noticed a calmness in my anxiety levels
My supplement provides 1600mg in one tsp but I want to make sure I get the highest amount I’m allowed because I’ve been quite deficient for awhile. I also have my own chickens and I eat two of their eggs every morning. I’m learning about the leaky gut/ leaky brain correlation and it’s all making total sense and I also noticed every time I ate salmon I felt calmer.
Carlson’s Norwegian fish oil is the brand I’m using and just ordered cod liver oil because I’m getting benefits already even after just starting them.
I have bp issues that are not associated with diet or exercise and nothing seems to work. I use infrared sauna daily for 30mins at 125f. The fish oil has already helped lower my bp and I’m hooked.

Dr. Berg, I’m a regular viewer of your channel and I follow your guidance in intermittent fasting. I’m a 29 years old female and I’m struggling with stretch marks. I request you to please make a video on removing stretch marks. It will be of much help for people like me who have had struggled their whole life with overweight and stretch marks. Thank you.

The one thing that reduced my inflammation to almost zero, even more than cutting back on carbs, was ditching ‘vegetable’ oils for animal-based oils and extra virgin olive oil (which I buy in Spain). I’ve always enjoyed fish and seafood.
