Califlower is also great gnochi replacement … just chop it very roughly, cook it and add some taaasty sauce or other additions 😀 (if you are Czech try to make halusky with califlower ! if not Czech sorry it requires very very very special super healthy cheese caled bryndza)

    • Diet Doctor on March 12, 2021 at 7:27 am

Great ideas Annie Beanie! We love cauliflower gnocchi too and pair it with some fresh basil ❤️ https://www.dietdoctor.com/recipes/keto-gnocchi-with-homemade-basil-pesto

      That halusky sounds absolutely delicious!

I love ALL the contents from Diet Doctor, the excellent graphics, the well written articles, the excellent interviews for both pros and ams … ALL DDs contents support the wonderful truth about diet: You are what you eat.

    • Carey Stoneking on March 11, 2021 at 7:16 pm

What you say is true. I prefer , you are what your body does with what you eat. Peace.

@Diet Doctor I forgot to write this: It was the Diet Doctor’s website subscription that helped me get going on the keto-path. I have never looked back, excellent health (mental and physical) and a normal weight now prevails. Thank you!

As a quick snack I make Avocado Crackers. Slice up some Avocado, and put it on a slice of cheddar cheese (meaning the cheese is the cracker).. top with a smidge of sea salt. I gave some to my daughter to “try” and she said “OMG! this is food crack!”

    • Diesel on May 1, 2021 at 11:38 am

Salt is not good for you

    • LopsidedPufferfish282 on May 13, 2021 at 1:04 am

      @Diesel ..?

    • Barb Lacy on February 4, 2022 at 2:10 am

@Diesel yes it is, watch Dr Ken Berrys YouTube channel. He wrote a fantastic book Lies My Doctor Told Me. That and saturated fat is bad are lies. It’s amazing when you read the original studies as he encouraged us to do. Except when the facts are buried deep in a study and you need to know statistics to know what is truth. Most tread the abstract or summary which are often fallacious foolishness to prove the hypothesis which is supported by funding for the study!!! Just watch his channel. The dude is brilliant and cares.

I use cheese to eat my pickle sandwich lol 40 lbs gone! And all I was trying to do was become insulin sensitive to cure nonalcoholic fatty liver. I love ketovore. Veggies are my appetizer while I cook my fatty meats.

    • Nick Westwood on February 6, 2022 at 9:37 am

@Diesel without salt, you WILL die

Celeriac – one of the few subterranean veggies. Awesome made into chips.

  6. Amy Young on April 1, 2021 at 10:22 pm

Great information provided in a straightforward, clear, understandable way. I’m learning alot and about to begin my Keto journey. Thanks Diet Doctor.

While the above ground and below ground rules are a good starting pace for newbies, it isn’t a hard rule. There are Veggies that grow above ground, that are high in carbs such as peas, beans, etc. and there are root veggies that are low in carbs such as Radishes and Jicama.

    • Sue Collins on December 6, 2021 at 8:26 am

Yes! What are the net carbs in carrots? I _love_ them!

    • Niki Bineri on March 25, 2022 at 9:15 pm

Celeriac is also low in carbs

  8. Carbage Man on July 27, 2021 at 10:00 pm

Kinda surprised squash made the list, but I do eat zoodles and shrimp after resistance training—to spike my insulin. If you’re gonna include zucchini, may as well include spaghetti squash.

I also have garlic, onions and tomatoes—usually on salads. Naturally, I keep the grams of carbs down, though. Kale and spinach are kind of pointless to eat raw, as they chelate minerals. I do like spinach steamed with butter, though. Oh yeah: seaweed, and if you want to replace potatoes, a little radish (in various forms) works well. Also missing: bell peppers—keep them green to avoid carb creep. In fact, transitioning to a low-carb diet from a keto diet would probably include a lot more garlic, onions, peppers and tomatoes.

From the list, my tops: asparagus. I could probably have it with every meal. In fact, just about every meal I eat has that, broccoli, cauliflower or zoodles. I used to eat a lot more spinach, but I’m pretty high iron, and I’m not giving up my beef and lamb.

I use kohlrabi instead of potatoes. Even zappa Tuscany soup, I use kohlrabi. Pill, slice as potato….it’s delicious. I let to try to my husband without tell him about kohlrabi, he didn’t taste any different

  10. Brian Bordenkircher on November 15, 2021 at 3:03 pm

Thank you for the awesome list!! Started up again last week. Doing it to jump start losing some fat. Previously I did it in while in the Army and intensively lifting. Can’t lift due to injuries, so just cutting off some fat for now. Then I very slowly start to sprinkle carbs in once I feel I’m at the ideal weight

i don’t know why i haven’t made pigs in a blanket yet…my grandmother used to make them all the time. The thought just came to me. She used rice and pork but i’m sure i could substitute cauliflower for the rice.

  12. Dus Bus on January 5, 2022 at 5:58 pm

disappointed I didn’t see any kind of mushroom on this list. I think basic white mushrooms are less than 2g of net carbs per 100g serving. plus they add great flavor especially to beef/venison dishes

One item overlooked by most is olives, they cover quite a few bases when it comes to keto, salt, olive oil, potassium and many more

  15. J.Y 2023 on March 10, 2022 at 1:46 pm

Made a creamy fish pie mix and topped it with lightly steamed grated cauliflower and then added cheese. Grilled it until bubbly. Makes a tasty substitute for high carb mashed potatoes.

I’m new to keto. I was in a skiing accident in 2009 and broke my back and sustained lower extremity nerve damage.I’m not paralyzed thankfully but I have no feeling in my legs and lower torso. I have been in a wheel chair since 2012 and have been gaining weight steadily. I went from someone who weighed 235lbs abd walked almost 10 miles every day to someone unable to really walk more than 20 steps without falling down, now with the added weight I can not even walk 5 steps. Unable to exercise has killed my energy levels, my motivation, and I am starting to show signs of muscle atrophy. I really need to take back control of my body so am starting Keto on New Year’s Day.
