If you’re taking magnesium for sleep and other benefits, yet you’re still dealing with insomnia, fatigue, high blood pressure, heart palpitations, leg cramps, anxiety, and more, this is for you.

Magnesium is one of the most important minerals in the body. It’s involved in over 300 biochemical reactions and is vital for the following:
• Heart rhythm
• Healthy blood pressure levels
• Sleep
• Energy
• Insulin
• Nerve function
• Mitochondrial function

Here are 8 common mistakes people make with magnesium, which could be the reason why your magnesium supplements are not working!

1. Thinking magnesium works by itself
Magnesium and vitamin D are codependent. You need 4,000 to 10,000 IUs of vitamin D for magnesium to work properly in the body. If you don’t have enough vitamin B6, potassium, or sodium, it may seem that your magnesium is not working.

2. Ignoring cell membrane damage
Many people have damaged cell membranes due to the consumption of seed oils. You need healthy cell membranes for magnesium absorption.

3. Stress
Stress shuts down digestion, lowers immunity, decreases blood flow to certain organs, and increases the demand for magnesium. Caffeine can also deplete magnesium.

4. Taking the wrong type of magnesium
Magnesium oxide is the most common form of magnesium in supplements, but it’s the worst! Magnesium glycinate is a much better option and is the most absorbable.

5. Blocking magnesium absorption without knowing
Too much calcium can block the absorption of magnesium. Zinc, fluoride, and aluminum can inhibit its function. Low stomach acid, antacids, and acid blockers can also interfere with magnesium absorption.

6. Misunderstanding RDAs
RDAs do not represent a therapeutic dose. If you’re trying to correct a magnesium deficiency, you need significantly more magnesium than the RDA. If you want to increase your magnesium intake, spread your doses throughout the day, as you can only absorb around 300 to 400 mg at once.

7. Unrealistic expectations
Vitamins and minerals do not work like drugs. It can sometimes take a while to restore healthy biochemistry in the body.

8. Missing the insulin connection
Insulin resistance can block magnesium absorption, and consequently, a magnesium deficiency can increase your risk of insulin resistance.

    Who else takes Magnesium ?
    🖐

    • @sabrx4783 on February 4, 2026 at 11:15 am

      I ate pumpkin seeds everyday.

    • @xth3y_kill_k3nny on February 4, 2026 at 11:21 am

I just eat a lot of bananas for magnesium n potassium

    • @NielsPausma on February 4, 2026 at 11:31 am

@sabrx4783both, and I still have eyelid twitching from time to time 😅 but it’s way less

      We are, Dr. Berg’s!❤

    • @kevinfreestone9822 on February 4, 2026 at 11:35 am

Yep, magnesium glycinate 400mg in the evening, but i also take vitamins B1, b6, b12. Also d3 and k with zinc. Three tablets per day covers most of these blockers.

  2. @criticalthinker7822 on February 4, 2026 at 11:07 am

Sunshine, MG, and B vitamins and Big salads with Sea Salt

    • @kevinfreestone9822 on February 4, 2026 at 11:39 am

Yes, i used to think this. 15 minutes per day of sunshine gives you your daily iu dose. Although, that 60 is, not the 8,000 to 9,000 is which is now being recommended. I.e. you have to work all day in a sunny field in order to get this from sunlight.

    • @kevinfreestone9822 on February 4, 2026 at 11:40 am

      Sorry, 600 iu

    • @RebeccaIzzmee on February 4, 2026 at 1:29 pm

Salads contain oxalates that promote kidney stones

    • @1wildblue1 on February 4, 2026 at 2:03 pm

Spinach is really high in oxalates, but lettuce & arugula have low or no oxalates. Pass on the spinach if you are a stone former or eat rarely with cheese (calcium).

  3. @nimkal on February 4, 2026 at 11:15 am

Also don’t forget if you take vitamin D in the morning without at least 10g of fat, then you are only absorbing 30% of your vit D dose and that’s a huge waste!
Keep this in mind, don’t take vitamin D on an empty stomach – add a bit of fat. Not nuts! They have oxalates/phytates which blocks some magnesium absorption. Eat your nuts separately 2hrs apart, I’m surprised Dr Berg doesn’t mention this.
Take it with omega3s, eggs, avocado/butter toast, or anything similar.

    • @BKay-f6m on February 4, 2026 at 11:18 am

  6. @AlvaroPuentes-1985 on February 4, 2026 at 11:33 am

thanks for this video, really helpful. this clicked for me because i kept thinking magnesium “wasn’t working” but i never looked at what i was eating around it. what actually helped was writing everything down. i started using a 52 week new food pyramid tracker i found online and just tracked real food, not calories, and cut out most carbs that mess with mineral absorption. within a week it was obvious, foods like liver and eggs made me feel way better, calmer, better sleep, less tension, while other foods just blocked everything. seeing it on paper was eye opening, i never would have noticed the pattern otherwise. appreciate you breaking this down, this stuff matters.

  7. @DavidColeman-kv1gz on February 4, 2026 at 11:43 am

We employ politicians to monitor these food suppliers 😮

    • @Avengedsevenfoldrocks on February 4, 2026 at 2:16 pm

Well let’s be grateful for RFK

    • @hisimagenme on February 4, 2026 at 6:31 pm

We never should have given the food and medical industry over to the government. We are all guilty of that. Now we need to stand up for what’s right.

It takes DECADES to get sick. Be patient. Do the right thing and you’ll gradually every day, start to feel right as rain!

      Well said

    • @Jeffs60 on February 4, 2026 at 2:33 pm

If you don’t eat any foods invented in the last 100 years and stay away from foods high in salt then you do not need to worry about Magnesium.

    • @earlsnapp6318 on February 4, 2026 at 2:34 pm

You truly said that right! Well done and thank you.

    • @Drberg on February 4, 2026 at 3:41 pm

Do not try and bend the spoon. That’s impossible. Instead…only try to realize the truth…There is no spoon.

  9. @scottymoondogjakubin4766 on February 4, 2026 at 12:06 pm

I was having heart palpitations ! Come to find out it was from taking calcium supplements ! In less than a week after I stopped taking the calcium they went away ! I now get my calcium from natural sources !

    • @allison471 on February 4, 2026 at 1:42 pm

Calcium carbonate is basically a rock & should be removed from the market

    • @CaseyTurnerMusic on February 4, 2026 at 2:27 pm

Calcium contract. Magnesium relax 🌴. I’m on Spotify and Applemusic if you want to relax further w some new island music. aloha🤙

    • @MusicisMedicine-r6z on February 4, 2026 at 3:03 pm

Calcium supplementation is rarely recommended any more (-never in isolation) because it increases calcification of soft tissue: blood vessels, muscles, organs, corneas etc.

    • @Themix274 on February 4, 2026 at 3:17 pm

This, just following all these recommendations is dangerous.

    • @Gg-px2zo on February 4, 2026 at 3:48 pm

@MusicisMedicine-r6z unfortunately doctors are prescribing calcium only to my customers. They get a great education on the problems with just taking calcium. 😊

  10. @RealJustice-o9j on February 4, 2026 at 2:10 pm

After i take my daily 3 kilos of supplements, i have just enough room left to consume a small sandwich.

    • @narenderky on February 4, 2026 at 2:16 pm

      😂

    • @mahomaho4 on February 4, 2026 at 2:51 pm

      Sandwich?? That’s carbs!! 😂

    • @Kite-1000 on February 4, 2026 at 2:54 pm

You need at least 5 kg of supplements per day for general good health.😊

    • @stephaniechaffee6269 on February 4, 2026 at 2:55 pm

Haha! Maybe it’s a lettuce wrap sandwich?? 😂

    • @newfreenayshaun6651 on February 4, 2026 at 3:07 pm

It’s the sandwich. Cut that part out, eat right!

  11. @vasudevpranadas on February 4, 2026 at 2:44 pm

Overeating and frequent meals paired with lack of physical movement is the root cause of most health issues

    • @ravenregards on February 4, 2026 at 3:45 pm

For me the intermittent fasting works well. I’ve never eaten breakfast for two reasons. One is I’m just not hungry when I wake up and two if I eat then I don’t feel like eating at lunch which then throws off my evening meal. I now wait until I’m actually hungry which usually occurs around 2 in the afternoon. I then eat my evening meal around 7 or 8pm. I don’t snack in between, but might eat a little something before I go to bed. Also I eat until I’m comfortable, not stuffed. Long story short I lost 30 pounds in 3 years by eating all my food within an 8 hour period of the day. I’m only 5’8″ so going from 160 to 130 was a big deal for me. I feel better, sleep better and personally think I look younger.

In high school, instead of taking those boring health classes, we should have been studying the biology. And the physiology of how to take care of ourselves for the rest of our lives because after all this body is not a rental

    • @forsakenlife4873 on February 4, 2026 at 4:21 pm

And at 48 years old if I knew then what I’ve learned the hard way now. Lemme tell ya………

Dr. B, You’re awesome! I’m trying to absorb your teachings. My wife’s psychiatrist and family practitioners had her take a different Magnesium to help with her BMs… she’s still on that version, but I’m considering switching her over to gycinate version. I’ll watch your other podcast. Cheers
