Why Do Most Indian Men Have a Protruding Potbelly?
Watch this video to learn about the potential reasons why many Indian men tend to have a protruding potbelly and how it can be linked to their diet and gut health.
0:00 Intro: Why do many Indian men develop a potbelly, and how can it be addressed?
0:33 Potential factors contributing to abdominal fat
0:54 Differences between omnivorous and herbivorous diets
2:56 History of the Indian diet
4:54 Strategies for minimizing belly fat
The protruding potbelly is a common sight among many Indian men, and it can be attributed to a combination of factors such as genetics, lifestyle habits, and diet. While the tendency to store abdominal fat may have some genetic component, the high prevalence of this condition among Indian men suggests that there may be other contributing factors at play.
One potential factor is the traditional Indian diet, which has evolved over time. Historically, Indians consumed a predominantly plant-based diet with small amounts of meat, mostly goat or sheep. However, as modern diets have become more Westernized, there has been a significant increase in the consumption of ultra-processed foods high in sugar, seed oils, and refined starches.
These highly processed foods can cause inflammation in the gut and weaken the stomach lining, making it easier for harmful bacteria such as H. pylori to thrive. H. pylori is a type of bacteria that can cause gastritis and ulcers by weakening the stomach's protective mucus lining. To survive in the stomach's acidic environment, it produces ammonia that neutralizes stomach acid. This can lead to further digestive issues and an increased risk of developing diseases.
To address these problems, refined carbs should be eliminated from the diet, and protein intake should be increased, particularly from animal sources. Doing intermittent fasting and avoiding foods that cause bloating may be beneficial. Introducing betaine hydrochloride as a supplement can also help improve stomach acid levels and kill off pathogens in the gut.
In addition, understanding the digestive system and its functions can provide valuable insights on how to take care of it and address specific issues. Ultimately, by making mindful food choices and adopting nutritious eating habits, Indian men can work towards minimizing belly fat and improving their overall gut health.

Glad to hear it. My indian family concur
Too much meat products like milk.
It’s not only digestive problem it’s also diet, stress, lack of SX, pollution, most importantly Shting in the street & river banks.

80% of the men I see in OHIO, USA have protruding bellies. Not just a problem in India😢😢
Ohioans problem is beer. 😂
Same in MO !
The topic is Indian men tho🙄. Sheesh!
😂😂😂
He did not say it´s problem only in India. He is answering a question. I guess the question is from an Indian person. He also has videos where he talks about the obesity problems in America. Video even adressing why African American have a higher risk of diabeties and high blood pressure. Those who want help, want to learn and make a healthy change appriciate these videos. You are not special so get out of your feelings and let people who want to lean more about their health do🤨
I didn’t even know I was Indian.

My dad has he’s British and there are Africans who aim to have potbelly who have this to its not just an Indian thing .
The spicy brown gets around
My brother dna he got 5% Cherokee and I got 0.1% Cherokee from our Irish, Oklahoma grandmother. Robert de Brus and King O’Neil ancestry. Oh, I got 0.1% akananazi jew! My mother’s side. Fun! We love candy!
Crazy timing, I just googled “why are Indians skinny fat” on Monday!
As an Indian, this is something so common in our culture.
😂😂😂😂😂
I was watching one of those street food videos last night. I believe it was Indian. They were making banana milkshakes, and I noticed their bellies, too. This is great timing for me also 😂
Too much carbs which converts to fat and leak in the guy
Yeah I can relate to that, Dr Berg can really read minds.
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
As a man of Indian background, I’d say the most common reason is down to the type of foods we eat, and how they eventually lead to serious health problems. I’m doing what I can to cut away from that.
Carbohydrates?
But Indian food is god damn delicious… 😂
If a pot belly is the price to pay, then so be it
@@scroopynooperz9051Sure you will be saying that when you get a form of cancer or diabetes.

That’s true
Unless he’s an Indian man doing manual or agricultural work in India…as millions routinely do!

I am an Indian and 90% men in my area who are above 30 yrs age have a potbelly. It is because of lack of exercise, eating too many carbs, processed foods and sweets (Indian mithayi which are mostly fried and have sugar). Also they eat excess calories.
I too got a potbelly after pregnancy but I reduced it by reducing my calories, jogging everyday and eating just whole foods made at home.
You’re still fat aren’t you? Be honest.
Excellent news that your exercising now. Keep it up❤
@@JAHWARRIOR144 Thank you
Listen again to what Dr Berg said.
Also I see women who into yoga are very slim and fit looking.
Excess carbs in the form of roti, rice, dairy, sweet dishes, refined oils with most of the dishes containing potatoes and lack of exercise are the main culprit alongwith frequent eating ,stressful and depressing life is the main culprit here in india.!
Most Indians have a massive sweet tooth. Combined that with replacing healthy ghee with seed oils contributes to huge health problems in India.
oh wow i feel attacked
Most Indians have a huge sweet tooth.
Free thyself from these starchy and often toxic carbs, deadly oils‼️ and sugars‼️
U forgot cold drinks, no hard work or exercise
I had a young friend from India I invited to the gym with me. He had a portruding belly. He told me such a belly was a sign of wealth and prosperity in his country.
Certainly not among those below 60. That is the last four generations.
That’s older generation mentality. Young people are taking up exercise.
@@kaiser1295BS. The youngsters and those cretin students are lazier than ever!
I would think it is a sign of a fool😂 (when I hear someone say it is a sign of wealth etc.)🫣
Nowadays even the poor have potbelly because they get free rice and wheat from the govt.
I am an Indian sir. Thanks for taking care of India. Sir I have been following you since 2021.

@@moodmeditation4458 that’s how you respect your elders. People in the western countries don’t know how to respect their elders. I am of Indian origin living in the west since 56 years. So I know what I am talking about.
The main reason is the carbohydrates Indians eat which are roti and rice. The majority of families eat between 9to10 pm and then go to sleep. Very few people know about nutrition and the majority are not into any fitness regime.
They don’t call them ‘yellow-bellies’ for nothing…😉
Yeah the roti and rice are among the blant based foods he’s referring to which are contributing to not just excess calorie intake and weight gain, but bloating due to the fermentation that occurs when eating large amounts of these types of foods
Has nothing to do with what time you eat. Calories in vs out
@@kalencwil3924 thats the basic idea but other factors are involved. For example if u eat 3k calories throughout the day you will gain more weight compared to if you ate it all in say 6 hours and fasted the rest of the time.
I think the main reason is that you cannot walk around the city which turns into doing 0 exercise.
I lived in India for 4 years.
I realized in Europe I walk an hour a day at least naturally , just by going to place.
In Mumbai, there is not really a place to walk , plus its not in the culture to just go to places walking so, if you are not careful , you just take riksha or car and you dont move at all
I can only eat meat and certain green vegetables or I am a bloated mess. I am ashamed to say it took me over 50 years to figure it out. Young people have so much more access to valuable information today to help themselves. Thank you Dr. Berg for all you do.
same here, i’m still a work in progress.
Same here…wish I knew this 10 or 20 years ago. 51 years old here and changing my old way of thinking. 👍
So what did u figure out?? U mean even meat and veggies are bloating u??
I feel chest congestion 20 years after eating 3 eggs or more how to deal with it I want to eat more eggs
Why Chinese are short heighted stunts
It’s a new phenomenon in India, I found that the generations of our great grandfathers were mostly doing two meals a day, they also do fast more often. There was common phrase “2 waqt ki roti”.
But now, there is a 3+half meal pattern which most people are following.
Breakfast was not the part of Indian culture, the first food was always around 11 or 12.
In big cities though with Western food n influence
I am Indian. The main reason for pot belly apart from the reasons cited by Dr Berg is that 90% Indians don’t exercise, eat frequently and eat a lot at wrong times, Sleep late and wake up early, eat sweets during festivals and during summers we eat 500 varieties of mangoes and jackfruit. 😅
I am an indian and i love eating kfc and milk
Yes. I think it is also the portion size.
indians dont exercise by going to gym , but aveeerage indian does enough exercise than most countries , real reason behind the bellly is genetics and high carb diet . sweets and sugar they eat is completely fine . trust me india dont have lot of varieteis in fruits compared to other countries . food variety is less too , we have many dishes for ourselves . stayed in korea, usa, japan , singapore . the amount of food you can get for cheap is on another levl. in cities in india they are expensive and not everyone cann afford to eat .
@@KadenaCEOit’s not because you don’t exercise, it’s because you don’t eat your beef/cow. Meat is vital in gut health.
Don’t exercise? I swear indians work like 16 hours a day
I’m an Indian and fitness enthusiast, I’ve noticed the same concerning trend in India, which is
1. high intake of sugar, wheat, maida, and white rice (I avoid all this and prefer brown rice).
2. Less protein intake.
3. Worst than everything is lack of physical activity.
Carbs are not your enemy. Problem is lack of high-intensity exercise, overeating, stress – both physical and mental. Need more workout and balanced diet. Overeating should stop. Need to get body to have a higher metabolism and get hormone levels balanced.
Rice, wheat, maida, they are all fine as long as they are part of a balanced diet and not contributing to overeating.
Well said
Brown rice I heard has arsenic
Your observation doesn’t matter. Research and science matters. Prevalence of obesity in India is only 5-6 percent
From a cultural standpoint.
– sitting posture
– heavy amount of ghee
– a lot of carbs (roti and rice)
– walking considered as workout
– simple desserts consist a significant amount of sugar
A lot of the foods and spices used to be fresh and organic, but now are heavily chemically processed.
Sad truth. Khaand is replaced by white sugar in all dishes 😢😢
Ghee is good. Walking is fine.
Less protein and more carbohydrate is the problem.
Ghee is not the problem, it’s the amount of sugar and carbs
Ghee is not the issue. It is the roti that the ghee is on that is causing the problem.
Also, khaand, gur, sugar are of the same category. None of them is better than the other.
Ghee is superfood and likewise any food heavy amount is not good.
Btw in India less people have access to real ghee.
True. We, Indians, eat lot of simple carbohydrates and very less good fats. I have started Keto after following you. Now i am more energetic and lost my belly fat. Thank you Sir.❤
Get ready for Ketone overload and Insulin resistance coming to you through yours keto paved way..
The reason why they are pot bellied and diabetic because of the biggest misconception. Homemade = nutritious food = balanced diet. So when it comes to eating 10 puris with oily chhole just because it is homemade, or mother’s thinking they made nutritious food by forcing children eat 3 rotis with overcooked subji that has no nutritional value.
A lot of today’s food is different than food that was eaten 300 years ago (pre-british). There were no potatoes, Tomatoes, sago (sabudana), refined flour or even whole wheat flour. The subji was made with minimum spices and steamed with less oil. The rotis/bhakri were made with millets.
This kind of straight talk (non-pc, zero disclaimer or apologetic preface) is very much needed and missed in the world. This can help many Indian men and other cultures who have this problem.
You try eating Pig and feed your kid and Allah then come back to other communities
My brother got mad at me because I stoped eating rice, bread and other common (simple) carbs for my weight loss. “You abandon your heritage?!?”. Over the last 6 months I lost 75lbs. Doing my best to keep it off.
