You can find the study on the oils here: https://actascientific.com/ASNH/pdf/ASNH-02-0083.pdf – You can always use use lard, coconut oil, or avocado oil for frying if you prefer those!

    • Sheila Yungk on September 8, 2020 at 2:49 pm

Thanks. I do fry with coconut oil. Many years ago when I was 26 I went on the Atkins diet. I love my bread and sugar, but I also loved eating bacon and eggs everyday. We were allowed the “greasy foods” back then. I would have hamburgers and ribs. I really liked it. I did lose weight too. I didn’t know about cholesterol back then so never had any blood tests to check it out. Because I am on a plant based diet, but do eat a lot of healthy fats, coconut oil, lots of avocado. I eat more avocado than anything. My HDL, which is my good cholesterol is around 75. Dr. Joseph Mercola says that our HDL should be 60 or above. So I’m happy with that. I have a friend who is on the Keto diet. She has been on it a long time. She does that fasting too. I will get in touch with her to see how she is doing. I am really torn about this. I don’t know if I could stick to it. I do love my bread and I have maple syrup in my tea. By the way, is it okay to have liquid stevia? I have that in my tea.

    • Sheila Yungk on September 8, 2020 at 2:53 pm

I also don’t like the thought of animals being killed for us. Have you ever seen the videos on the slaughter houses? How dirty they are and the way the animals are mistreated? It is enough to make anyone stop eating meat. You can find these videos online. If not go to Freelee the Banana Girl’s website on YouTube. I believe she shows this. I would think that you can find this anywhere. Thanks you so much for your response.

    • RuledMe on September 8, 2020 at 3:00 pm

@Sheila Yungk I’ve seen them but it’s a means to an end that we farm animals that way. With everyone wanting extremely cheap meat, that’s the only viable way for a lot of these farms to do business. You don’t have to support it, though, and can still eat meat while supporting better farming practices. You can always find local farms (or order from them online) that raise their animals humanely. There are lots of farms that are doing this nowadays, so it’s pretty widely available. It also typically provides much more nutritious and better-tasting meat. We do have videos and articles on our channel/website that goes over vegetarian keto and vegan keto, which you may be more interested in though.

As far as your other comment goes, you can do “bread” replacements on keto (they won’t be exactly the same but should cut cravings), and you can use liquid stevia in your tea instead of maple syrup.

You shouldn’t cook with olive oil it will oxidize. You should cook with avacado oil for high heat and coconut oil for medium.

    1) Extra Virgin Olive Oil isn’t really good for high heat frying (great for salads though), use Avocado Oil instead since it has a much higher smoke point — but if you’re sauteing and keeping the temps under 330-350 degrees then EVOO is fine;
    2) On keto you want fatty cuts of meat (just like fish), poultry in general tends to be too lean — I mean of course you can eat it, but it isn’t a “pillar” in Keto; and
    3) Avocado has to be on the list.

    • RuledMe on December 31, 2019 at 8:02 pm

Studies show that the stability of EVOO is still as good as or better than most oils even at higher temperatures (check the study we link to in the pinned comment).

    • CJS929 on December 31, 2019 at 9:06 pm

@RuledMe Interesting study that would require more than just my 10 minute perusal to analyze it properly. That said the initial smoke points of EVOO and OO seem off to me and my experience cooking with both isn’t reflected by the adjusted numbers after heating. Will just have to add this to my growing list of Keto issues requiring further study. 😉

We have just changed from rolled oats with our breakfast, to pumpkin seeds and chia seeds and it is helping us with our maintenance of ketosis.

Very useful keto diet information..thank u Madam 🌺🙏

  13. Akane Cortich on July 30, 2020 at 3:27 pm

Been on keto for years. AND for practicality I find simpler to just eat fish/meat, eggs, thick cream, lard, Olive Oil, BUTTER, coconut oil/mct oil, some stock cubes, curry powder, chilli, hard cheese. I stopped peanuts, cashews as they help put on weight as you can eat them by the ton. Only vegetables I eat – tomato limited, broccoli, cauliflower. spring onion. Lots of salts.

    • RuledMe on July 31, 2020 at 1:37 am

Sounds pretty similar to me as well, except add cabbage and I still eat nuts in moderation. I’ve been keto for over 10 years now and I think you just find the stuff you really like, are nutrient-dense, and can make a lot of dishes with.

This is the opposite of what I have been learning over the past few years. There is definitely controversial over this as opposed to high carbohydrate diets. I have been told that dairy and meat are killers. I do understand that because this diet stays away from breads, pastas and sugar that the body will use the fat as fuel, but I can’t help thinking of the Dr. who gave the TED talk about all the yellow as he called it, “chicken fat” that he saw in peoples veins and arteries as he assisted in operations.

    • RuledMe on September 8, 2020 at 2:32 pm

Human fat is yellow, and usually cholesterol deposits (which cause the fat buildup in veins and arteries) are what he would see. It wouldn’t be stored “chicken fat”. Keto has been shown in numerous studies to reduce cholesterol and if you use keto as a tool, can significantly promote weight loss.

Keto is a bit controversial but with more and more modern studies coming out, it’s looking to be like one of the healthiest diets out there as long as it’s followed properly. Remember, keto is a high-fat, moderate protein, and low-carb diet. Your main focus is on dark leafy vegetables, some cruciferous vegetables, a small amount of protein (so you don’t lose muscle), and the rest on fat. Most meals on keto are 1-2 veggies + protein + added fat on the plate. Salads are a great keto meal, using an olive oil/vinegar dressing.

You CAN follow keto unhealthily (just as with any diet) with tons of processed meats and dairy, but most people following keto in the long-term are mainly doing it for health and will adjust what they eat as well because of that. Plenty of whole foods with much less focus on processed ingredients.

I haven’t had sugar or carbs in like six weeks, cravings for them are gone, I’m learning more and more everyday and being in ketosis gives me the energy I need to keep up with my kids. I don’t need as much sleep at night and fasting 16:8 gives me the mental clarity I need for our busy mornings. Lol I know this sounds like an ad, it’s not. I’m just a regular mom. These videos give me motivation and help me when I get the late night munchies

    • Fay Abrahamsson on June 21, 2021 at 2:37 am

I have been doing the same! Starting my 11th week on Keto. No sugar or wheat and my cravings are gone. I can watch anyone eat a cupcake or bread and I have zero desire for it. I also do IF, 18-6. Have more energy than I dreamed of. Sleep less, wake up refreshed. Clothes now fit. I’ve lost 23 lbs and lots of inches. It’s my way of life/eating from now on.

  17. yesiownfrodo on July 31, 2021 at 3:18 pm

This is great, but there is an error. You cannot cook at high temp with olive oil, it has a low smoke point. I fry with safflower oil, and use olive oil for everything else. It’s awesome. Great video.

    • RuledMe on July 31, 2021 at 3:39 pm

Thanks! Modern research shows that is actually not true. Olive oil oxidizes less than most other oils at high temperature. Check the pinned comment to see the study.

    • Giorgio Cooper on February 23, 2022 at 4:28 pm

Correct ! Same here, we changed from Olive oil to butter for all frying.

  18. someblokecalleddave1 on January 4, 2022 at 11:29 pm

Doh! This is me already without even knowing what I was doing! That’s a result, it just made sense to me – mainly driven by understanding I didn’t want to eat crap food and tons of carbs!

  19. Roselique Otten on September 5, 2022 at 8:49 am

I did Keto before summer and it worked really well! During summer I took a break and I noticed that all the things I used to be able to eat made me feel sick. I really couldn’t eat anything too “carb-y”. I am back on Keto now and I feel great again. Also losing weight along the way. But aside from that, I am just so happy that I feel this much better.

    • Adrienne Taylor on September 7, 2022 at 1:23 pm

So does the weight com back once you stop

    • RuledMe on September 8, 2022 at 4:33 pm

@Adrienne Taylor Some weight will come back – generally keto will shed a lot of water weight initially and once you eat carbs you will gain that water weight back. But any fat loss that happened should stay consistent as long as you are not eating a calorie surplus once you switch off of a ketogenic diet. If you eat a lot of unhealthy foods and in a calorie surplus, you will gain weight no matter what diet you’re on.

    • Roselique Otten on September 8, 2022 at 4:45 pm

For me it didn’t really come back, but I’m super glad I’m back in ketosis now. It just makes me feel so much better
