Today we’re going to talk about three things you can do to fall asleep fast and sleep better through the night.

While some people have too much energy to fall asleep, others are actually too tired to fall asleep. It takes a healthy amount of energy in your energy factories, your mitochondria, to sleep well.

The organs that have the most mitochondria are your heart and brain. This means that both of these organs need a lot of oxygen to function properly.

Thankfully, there are several things you can do to increase oxygen into the mitochondria in the brain to help you fall asleep fast and have a good night’s sleep.

There is also, essentially, a clock in your brain that tells you when to sleep and when to wake up—we need to get this clock to work better.

How to sleep better at night:
• Exercise
• Consume vitamin B1 before bed
• Sleep with the window open
• Put plants in your room
• Consume CoQ10
• Take methylene blue
• Use dim lights after sunset
• Replace certain lights in your house with incandescent lights
• Avoid blue light before bed
• Use red lights
• Use the light from a fireplace if possible
• Use blue blockers
• Don’t consume any food 5 hours before bed
• Take vitamin D3 while traveling
• Go to bed before midnight (around 10 pm works for many people)

I love sleeping with my windows open. I always get a good deep sleep when I do. I also wear a sleep mask. Still waking up between 1-3, guess my adrenals still aren’t 100% yet. Working on it. Thanks for the info Dr. Berg.

@whatta 1You take salt before sleep or when you are waking up ?

    • Big Boss on May 2, 2023 at 12:05 pm

    • Lou ann Huber on May 2, 2023 at 1:10 pm

Grandma always slept with her window open. Maybe just a little in the winter. She had wool blankets. I had many overnight visits with her when I was little and remember not being to sit up because of the heavy weight of the blankets, my nose being cold and hearing the sounds of the city outside.

    • Lou ann Huber on May 2, 2023 at 1:13 pm

I sleep much better now that I don’t drink as much red wine at night as I used to.

    • Magda on May 2, 2023 at 5:39 pm

@whatta 1 is it the minerals in the pink salt that help sleep?

    • izzy p on May 2, 2023 at 11:11 am

Same! I’ve also eliminated alcohol since Janurary and what a HUGE difference!

    • you r enough 💜 on May 2, 2023 at 12:42 pm

@izzy p  I am even going through perimenapause and I’ve only experienced night sweats. I wake up from sweating and I fall back to sleep as soon as I change my pj’s, sorry about getting personal I just couldn’t imagine how bad my perimenapause would be if I didn’t get healthy.

Dr, Berg. Very helpful to go over these points. I find myself wanting coffee early am but no breakfast until 10am. Then I naturally want a meal at 3pm. Good to listen to ones’ body. B1 does help me sleep better along with a dark room and an open window. Thanks for this video.

  9. ForYourHealth on May 2, 2023 at 12:05 pm

I use quite a few ways to help me fall asleep: exercise and light exposure during the day, cool and dark bedroom, no eating 1-2 hours before bed (and if I eat anything, then it’s something light like yogurt and berries, or toast with almonds butter and banana), no screens before bed and drinking chamomile tea 2 hours before bedtime. A not-very-known light that helps me fall asleep is pink light – it’s a really nice light to use in the bedroom before bed.

  10. Health and Yum on May 2, 2023 at 12:11 pm

I found that eating the last meal earlier in the day is a major positive factor for my ability to fall asleep. At least 4 hours before bed time is perfect for me. And following a bedtime hygiene regularly (such as bath with relaxing essential oils before bed, no blue light in bed, etc.) always ensure that I sleep well every night. As long as my hormones are not acting out. 😀

This was literally me last night. Exhausted. I am currently for the last 3 weeks at a higher altitude, and it always screws with my sleep. When I am home sometimes, I just fall asleep with my kids between 830 and 9 and I feel great. I am out of town and my sleep is terrible. I will try these tips.

Are you in Colorado? If so can relate since moving😢

This has been my problem for ever, I once did 3 days of 8 hours shifts without sleep cuz I just couldnt sleep, and it also messed my whole education, infact I’ve slept 6 hours in the past 3 days . Thank you

This happened to me once, when I had to work during the day and go to college at night. The doctor advised me to exercise, but didn’t go into details like Dr. Berg. I couldn’t believe it at the time, because I was too tired to exercise. He just said if you still can’t sleep, come back to prescribe medicine. After I tried to exercise, my sleep got better and better.

This happened to me a lot and I was loosing hair for lack of sleep. Now, I have basically reversed the situation. Other than the things mentioned in the video, I also found followings to be useful:
    1. Use of GABA
    2. Heat powder of agarwood for 1~2 hours before sleep
    3. Meditation
    4. Less workload

  15. David on May 2, 2023 at 12:50 pm

Your right Doc. Doesn’t make sense to try and sleep during a insulin spike or just digestive activity that needs movement. Good stuff Doc. keepemcoming

Needless to say I learned a lot from todays video but I feel like I learn something new on all your videos! Thank you so much Doc!

I’ve been providing solo hospice care for someone and being too exhausted to sleep has been a real problem lately in combination of it always being interrupted sleep. Normally I’m a night owl so night time isn’t the problem, but being forced to be up during the day without any sleep has been really killing me.

Thank you for reminding me to try some deep breathing. I hope it starts helping.

Dr Berg, thank you once again for excellent, informative and actionable advice. Bravo, sir!
Affirming one of these bits of advice, a sleep mask was a tremendous help for me.

  19. Kha Lil on May 2, 2023 at 3:05 pm

Started working night shifts a month ago and i was literally too exhausted to sleep yesterday. And now dr.eric berg uploads this video. Thank you ❤
