6:28 Learn more about thiamine (vitamin B1)!

Let’s talk about the vagus nerve and digestion. One important function of the vagus nerve is regulating the hydrochloric acid in your stomach. A problem with the vagus nerve can lead to a cascade of digestive problems and health issues.

Acetylcholine is the main neurotransmitter involved in the vagus nerve. Acetylcholine needs vitamin B1, but a deficiency of B1 is a common problem. If you’re deficient in vitamin B1, your vagus nerve can’t make the hydrochloric acid you need.

A lack of hydrochloric acid can potentially lead to an increased risk of various health concerns, including:
• GERD
• Acid reflux
• Heartburn
• Hoarseness
• Problems digesting protein
• Bloating
• Constipation
• Allergies
• A lack of mineral absorption
• Anemia
• H. pylori
• Gastritis
• Ulcers
• Stomach cancer
• SIBO
• A lack of bile
• Gas
• Diarrhea
• Inflammation
• Leaky gut
• Immune problems
• Autoimmune problems
• Cognitive problems
• Mood problems

Consider taking natural vitamin B1 immediately. You can get it from nutritional yeast or a natural supplement. To increase hydrochloric acid naturally, try taking betaine hydrochloride.

If you have gastritis or ulcers, you may want to take zinc carnosine, but if you have SIBO, garlic may be beneficial. For stomach inflammation, try a carnivore diet.

This Doctor saved me. I was suffering from extreme constipation. 2 and a half months of hardly any bowel movements. The doctors couldn’t do anything. Not once did they recommend bile salts or specific supplements. I started using Dr. Berg’s supplements and apple cider vinegar. I also started eating non pasteurized sour kraut with small amounts of fiber to feed the probiotics. Thank you so much Dr.

@Candid Ly so true, I have leaky gut which is causing severe decay in my teeth/gums! I’m screwed cause I can’t get my leaky gut healed.

After colon cancer therapy, a dietician said to take a teaspoon of Epsom salt with water, I didn’t have a problem with constipation anymore.

    • Bob Bobby 2 on January 3, 2023 at 10:01 am

@Joyce Durand I tried that in the midst of the constipation. It didn’t work. Everything was so inflamed.

I’ve been on a anti inflammatory diet, with some keto, but mostly lots veggies and I stopped 100% alcohol, sugar and wheat, took a few months but feel way better, but best was the anti heartburn med I stopped taking. My bloating is gone, and the discomfort in lower abdomen. All problems come down to what we eat.

@Angela Henderson and the beauty of it all……it’s not a diet. Ya, we eat less but not crave food, and a day fast here n there is so easy. Side note, went to news eve party, didn’t drink, but figured what the hell, ate pasta, few pieces bread, first sugar treat since October, then bam…..20 minutes later, my lower abdomen was crappy again, felt bloated and didn’t feel all that great. Res5 evening uncomfortable. So I know that it’s not for me going forward. Nice to finally feel healthy. Way to go yiu guys.

Is taking HCL supplementing pills something that gives lasting effects or just immediate effects from the meal you take it with? And so you would need to take B1 supplements to naturally activate the vagus nerve into making HCL on its own? So a temporary HCL supplements plan + B1 Vitamin supplements until I can eat a meal without side effects and without HCL pills?

  7. Lalilu on December 31, 2022 at 3:07 pm

Dr. Berg might not be a medical doctor but he is more of a doctor than a lot of “real” doctors out there because he actually cares about the origin of health issues rather than to just suppress the symptoms of those issues. Cure the cause and the symptoms will disappear by themselves. 🙂 Thank you.

that sounds like a real doctor to me 🙂

    • amisoftau on December 31, 2022 at 11:13 pm

@Grim “the solution he offers u are not effective on a long term basis”
!? Be careful to not make wide sweeping assumptions or conclusions based upon partial or false information.

“he says vit B1 is the problem but my doctor has already put me on multivitamins many a times so there’s no way I am B1 deficient”
No. He says that B1 deficiency is ONE of the potential causes. Here you are also assuming that your multivitamin was a quality and adequate source for B1. In fact many of the cheap and available nutrient supplements are synthetic or of dubious source with often very low rates of absorption – effectively useless. Also bear in mind that their RDA’s are widely inaccurate – formulated to only avoid chronic illness rather than to allow the potential for full health.

He’s also talking within the context of being on a healthy Keto or Carnivore diet. If you’re still consuming the damaging SAD diet then no manner of supplements or medications are going to fix your health problems.

Nutrient absorption is also affected by both your gut health and your food supply nutrient content. The western food supply is mostly mass produced and so of very low nutrient content. And a damaged gut is also unable to fully absorb nutrients from the food..

Up to 70% of all nutrient absorption in the gut is performed by your microbiome, so that a healthy microbiome is essential. So consuming some probiotic foods such as Kifer or ferments vegetables such as raw sauerkraut is also required from time to time, to replenish and build your microbiome. This situation is made MUCH worse by the high rate of western food supply contamination with glyphosate, which actively and effectively kills off your gut microbiome, as does the taking of antibiotic medications. There is so much glyphosate in the food supply that everyone’s blood will test positive to it’s presence!?. A second factor is the cooking of many western food products (such as dairy), that completely destroys the natural probiotic content.

These factors and many more are covered by Dr Berg’s other videos. When acknowledging such factors your final assumption – “there’s no way I am B1 deficient” is thus obviously suspect. As I said, be very careful about “jumping to conclusions”. It’s probably THE biggest mistake everyone makes in day to day life. We’re all guilty of it and I’m certainly no exception! :).

@JennZenn He is a Doctor of Chiropractics but not a Doctor of Medicine.

    • EJ on January 2, 2023 at 7:52 pm

@JennZenn He is a doctor, but not an MD. Although he is better than most MDs because he never stops learning and searching for the truth in total body function. I began watching his videos about 4 years ago, nd his information has done more to heal my multiple ailments in those 4 years than any other doctor has tried to do throughout my entire life … most want to pass you off as a hypochondriac, or claim you are just depressed and have anxiety even though I am a happy go lucky kind of person. What they are really saying to me is that they are lazy and don’t want to bother investigating until hey figure it all out just because I am on medicaid for disabilities.

I’m 70 and had my gallbladder removed when I was 35. I have not noticed any digestive problems so far. Question should I be taking bile salt supplements because of my age and not producing enough hydrochloric acid?

    • Dr. Eric Berg DC on December 31, 2022 at 4:17 pm

I would say, take first betaine hydrochloride for the stomach, and your liver may just make more bile.

    • Tom WaterFooler on December 31, 2022 at 4:29 pm

“Root problems” often start long before symptoms (which are the effects of things going wrong/not functioning in ways that the body is having trouble adapting/making up for the shortage) … Doctor Berg has a great perspective and it is very very much worth looking into /exploring… as we age stomach acid is declining long before we notice the effects from it’s absence/ reduction…

  11. In Full Bloom on December 31, 2022 at 5:45 pm

Dear Dr. Berg, months ago, you recommend B1 as Benfotiamine, and Alpha Lipolic Acid for people who lost their sense of smell. This happened to my elderly father, 71y. He started taking both vitamins a month ago in pure powdered form 1 teaspoon per day each in his smoothie. He’s smell didn’t return completely (yet) but the temperature of both of his feet equalized. He had lower back surgery 15 y ago and since then, one of his feet was always cold on touch. And he would usually be sensitive to cold. Now, his feet are warm and his body warm too. He can smell only roses, jasmine, herbs, and Victoria secrets body lotions. So to cheer him up, I got him collection set of Victoria secrets body lotions for him. 🤗 Thank you.🥰 By the way, Dr. Berg, what else can dad take to speed up his list sense of smell please?

    • Michael Wills on January 2, 2023 at 12:39 pm

@In Full Bloom try adding green tea extract with the zinc. It will help increase the bioavailability of the zinc. Either supplement or just drink green tea. FWIW I too lost taste and smell last year from “the virus” and followed Dr Berg’s protocol of ALA and Benfotiamine and it worked. Thank you Dr Berg!

    • In Full Bloom on January 2, 2023 at 12:59 pm

@Michael Wills How much did you take and how long did it take you to recover? Did your smell recover completely? Thank you.

    • Speak Truth on January 2, 2023 at 5:15 pm

Ahhh 71 is not elderly…I am 72 with my share of ailments…I’d see to it that he gets out for walks in parks, in the woods ,at the mall when weather is down… build up by doing 20 min 3-4 times a day..after meals ..it will also regulate his blood sugar and blood pressure. Have the walks in the mall include stopping to smell soaps and perfumes , make it fun..

    • In Full Bloom on January 2, 2023 at 6:11 pm

@Speak Truth my dad walks almost every day 5km

    • EJ on January 2, 2023 at 7:44 pm

@Ann Miller it can also be caused by Zinc and other vitamin deficiencies. Also, my brother lost his ability to smell when he got a Covid vaccine.

Doesn’t it sound somewhat counter intuitive to add acid if you’re suffering from acid reflux?

    • Skeela the Skink on January 1, 2023 at 3:20 pm

Acid reflux is caused by too little stomach acid.

  19. EONutrition on January 1, 2023 at 12:52 pm

Awesome job raising awareness on this. The connection between thiamine and the gut goes far deeper than just improving vagal tone and improve HCL output, however. The enteric neurons themselves require massive amounts of thiamine, and thiamine was shown in the older Japanese literature (not translated in English) to stimulate practically every function of the GI tract, all the way through output of pancreatic enzymes, intestinal motility, intestinal barrier function, etc.

Research in China (also not translated in English) was using specific derivatives of thiamine back in the 1970s and 80s to treat intestinal disorders, ranging from IBS, constipation, obstruction and even IBD.

The FIRST study in humans (induced thiamine deficiency in a controlled setting) found that none of the patients developed Beriberi or Wernicke encephalopathy, but instead most of the initial symptoms to develop were digestive complaints! Bloating, nausea, reflux, and symptoms identical to SIBO. All of these resolved when thiamine was repleted.

    • Deepali Jones on January 3, 2023 at 3:52 am

@EONutrition Thanks a ton. I am taking 450mg of benfo and my b-complex has 100mg of the HCl form. I have ordered sulbutiamine so this will be an experiment. My gut kills me everyday! I have no motility issues. On the contrary, I have excess histamines and mast cell activation issues that has made eating anything impossible. So trying to increase Benfo as I go for now. I wish there were people out there who would guide us step by step through these processes 😉

    • Vidhyut Kargutkar on January 3, 2023 at 6:31 am

@Deepali Jones oh yes excess histamine that showed up in IgE test. Never knew B1 deficiency was causing it along with low HCl

    • Vidhyut Kargutkar on January 3, 2023 at 6:33 am

@EONutrition What foods would you recommend for B1? Or should suppliments be the way forward. Having very high IgE and on antihistamines. Just had a course of vit D, iron, folic acid, B12 to cover my deficiency because of gut issues and malabsorption.

    • Kris on January 3, 2023 at 3:13 pm

Thank you so much. I have been to 4 doctors and and taken every test! Suffering for 3 years now. I am having so many of these symptoms. I am going to try this. I have nothing to loose at this point. One even told me, I know you think you have some incurable disease” I am exhausted, miserable and couldn’t help but cry after.
