Today I’m going to share the best remedies for acne. When a person has acne, multiple things are happening at once.

The oil glands are called sebaceous glands—they make oil or sebum. Usually, the sebaceous glands are inflamed, enlarged, and producing too much oil.

Typically, bacteria are also involved, affecting the immune system and creating more inflammation.

One of the biggest causes of acne is a shift in hormones. But, a high-carb diet and frequent eating can also cause acne. It’s essential to get on a low-carb diet and do intermittent fasting to help get rid of acne fast.

Another one of the top acne causes is a deficiency in vitamin D. Vitamin D can regulate bacteria involved in acne—it’s a potent antibacterial. If you're deficient in vitamin D, you won’t be able to control acne-causing microbes.

Vitamin D also supports the sebaceous glands to help reduce swelling of the glands and oil production.

The best natural remedies for acne:
1. Take vitamin D3 (20,000 IU)
2. Get on the Healthy Keto® diet
3. Do intermittent fasting
4. Stop scrubbing your skin
5. Consume cod liver oil
6. Consume fatty fish

      Thank you!!

    • 4Veritas on February 1, 2023 at 6:06 pm

Pantothenic Acid and vitamin A can be helpful too. I wouldn’t take more than 8000-10000 IU of vitamin A a few times a week though.

@Dekisugi Hidetoshi I was a raw food (well formulated) vegan for over a decade.

Veganism is bad for your health and planetary health and kills more animals than consciously selecting ruminants. Try some info rabbit holes opposite to the vegan propaganda.

We’ve been lied to on so many fronts.

    • birdmadgirl70 on February 1, 2023 at 8:38 pm

Unfortunately any kind of fish oil causes breakouts for me 😐

    • 4Veritas on February 1, 2023 at 10:35 pm

@Dekisugi Hidetoshi Switch to vegetarianism. You need animal fat. I have had many vegans in my family, all healthy young people when they began They typically last about 3 years before their health deteriorates. I believe if they had been vegetarian they would have lasted much longer.

Well, what’s your view on the acids, serums and peptides and all the stuff? Are there any side effects? And would like to see more skincare videos 🤗 Thanks a ton

Just introduce yourself to the wonderful Korean skincare. They are all natural. Especially if you live in the US, dont use shelf brands.

No wonder I had acne as a teenager. I wish I had Dr. Berg then, it would’ve changed my life.😔👍💜

It makes me angry thinking about what I went through and all the doctors and drugs I took that didn’t work.

    • Decipher Code on February 1, 2023 at 4:28 pm

@jerseygrl5 same here, if i only knew this…struggled in my teens and 20s, 30s and was self conscious about my skin. 🙁

    • sher olivette on February 2, 2023 at 6:19 am

One day, I got extremely emotionally hurt from a friend and my face broke out very bad that my mom took me too the ER. I was given a high dose of Tetracycline which left me with visible pores. I’ve taken every drug except Accutane bc my mom was afraid of the side effects. I learned to live with it but I wish I knew Dr Berg who is a true Heroine, educating people about health 😇

    • DireBox 9990 on February 2, 2023 at 3:38 pm

Same. Now I have severe acne scars all over my face. I don’t have a future. 🙃

  4. capcomfan82 on February 1, 2023 at 12:09 pm

I had horrible acne on my back as a teen and early 20s. Once I started eating well , quitting sugar and started drinking more water it cleared up. I actually went to dermatologist over it and what a waste of time. It’s really easy to see where your going wrong if your honest with yourself and take a look at your behaviors

    • capcomfan82 on February 2, 2023 at 12:20 am

@margo. acne is a inflammatory issue. You could be using a lotion on your face or body that your allergic to, everyones issues will be different.

    • Monica KS on February 2, 2023 at 2:10 am

@riproar11 I guess I missed the fact that you had been elected the grammar checker of this group. Congratulations! I think you’re (you+are) too full of yourself; (you+self) in case you couldn’t figure it out. In other words, get a life, and leave others alone!

    • riproar11 on February 2, 2023 at 2:37 am

@Monica KS Don’t hate the messenger. I’m just helping you so you don’t repeat this mistake.

    • Jon Lobov on February 2, 2023 at 3:41 am

I think its just another manifestation of pathogens, so if vitamin D helped I think it was just boosting the immune system to kill pathogens
Id add some sort of antimicrobial food daily like garlic

    • Tom on February 2, 2023 at 9:21 am

@Brittany Daniels I can absolutely say for complete certainty that the reason so many poor kids with acne still get it and it doesn’t get resolved by any advice or doctor’s visits is that we don’t have a cure or a clue about what’s causing it. But all the evidence says sugar is totally unrelated. It’s good to keep sugar low for your teeth though. That’s obvious. Some things have obvious causality and some don’t. Acne doesn’t have one yet so all these face burning kits and your eating too much sugar is total baloney.

I suffered acne for 16 years and Vitamin D3 brought back my confidence.

    • manikandan gopal on February 1, 2023 at 1:00 pm

How do you take, and how long we need to take vit D3

    • Company Confidential on February 1, 2023 at 4:04 pm

@manikandan gopal please take it with K2 to avoid kidney stones! D3 gets in soft tissue and organs without K2 found in sauerkraut, dark meat chicken, eggs and some organ meats.

    • Pamela Timbush on February 1, 2023 at 8:29 pm

      @manikandan gopal
Vitamin D3 is something you should take every day it is so good for your body period (and for your joints)

if there are hormonal disturbances none of the above listed are going to help…so checking for hormones should be done – I suffered with it for many years, and back then, that was when Accutane came out (isomer of vitamin A) — that was the only thing that had worked for me. Of course, at that time, it was experimental and you needed to be on a lowfat diet along with getting pregnancy tested every month (fetal abnormalities) — I can tell you that the emotional scarring from having cystic acne is something you just don’t forget.

    • Genny on February 2, 2023 at 8:45 am

@beingsshepherd no the american guidline is 10.000 for the people over 18, but if you are insufficient you can take 20k for 2-3 month and then take 10k UI/day, but however if you take 20k for the 5-10 years it’s not tossic.

Vitamin D deficiency seems to be the base for almost every issue! I started having issues with acne @ 52-53 BEFORE I discovered IR! It had gotten better with time (increased D) cut back on carbs, but unfortunately I’ve been left with scaring on my pink skin because of it. The acne that I deal with is like grains of sand under my skin. It’s been, almost, traumatizing what’s its done to my skin and self esteem!

    • Spice Gyal Lili on February 1, 2023 at 7:00 pm

The only thing that helped my acne was 50% raw vegan. I’m lazy so it’s mostly just apples and carrots, but within one month my forehead was clear and I had only two new pimples. The other 50% is everything else-butter, beef, etc. but as unprocessed and fresh as possible. No fast foods no chips. I try to include 1 apple and 2 handful of carrots everyday. Organic of course.

    • Spice Gyal Lili on February 1, 2023 at 7:01 pm

Will try to do 100% raw vegan at some point and keto if I can on a vegan diet, but I felt drawn to first go for unprocessed whole raw living foods and it paid off. It’s a full body cleanse if you will

For all that have scars there is lasers that drastically improve scaring on the face.

    • EC on February 1, 2023 at 10:45 pm

@Leah Gail 🔮 this is ABSOLUTELY it. It’s different from inflammatory pus filled pimples I would get on my chin. For me this is definitely related to hormone imbalance/pcos. My theory is high or unbalanced testosterone leads to the grainy pimples on cheeks and under jaw. Issues with estrogen and progesterone (high est low prog) leads to the more massive cystic chin acne.

  8. Manic Mercurian on February 1, 2023 at 12:51 pm

Your tip on intermittent fasting absolutely helped to cure my acne, but I am actually wanting to gain weight right now so I’m looking forward to hearing these other remedies as well 🙂

    • Anna S on February 1, 2023 at 1:10 pm

He has advice on that in several videos about IF and Keto. If you want to gain weight, you need more calories, so you might want to consume more healthy fat in your diet.

    • YourHealthKick on February 1, 2023 at 6:04 pm

If you’re already doing LCHF diet or KETO and wanting to gain weight, I’d recommend lifting heavier weights (provided you are lifting correctly), and of course, increasing your caloric intake. If you have a hard time eating more, but do okay with nuts and seeds, I’d recommend eating your regular diet, and adding healthy nuts or pure nut butter. Whether it’s macadamias, pistachios, walnuts, or pecans (my choices), you’d be able to add weight fairly quickly.

Considering your goal is to gain weight, you’re someone who can drink the bulletproof coffee and look past the need to avoid additional healthy fats. Not that this matters, but being a former athlete that played and worked out at a VERY high level regularly (because it was my job) compared to now, these things seem to work extremely well for me to maintain or gain, provided you aren’t sedentary.

      GOOD LUCK!!! YOU GOT THIS!!

OH YEAH, and don’t forget: ADEQUATE SLEEP IS KEY!!

    • Manic Mercurian on February 1, 2023 at 7:34 pm

I was more seeking remedies on *acne* (while gaining weight), which I got in this video. It’s already clear to me how to gain weight but thanks y’all for the tips and encouragement 🙂

Sumo wrestlers only eat one meal a day. They just consume about 10,000 calories of sushi!

  9. signsofplay on February 1, 2023 at 12:52 pm

When I was 16 I fasted for several days before Prom so I would look good in my dress. My acne surprisingly also went away! So, I knew my acne was at least in some way food related.

One thing I actually never had to deal with is acne , I feel so bad for anyone that deals with acne I had a friend back in middle and high school that had bad acne and I was her friend and she dealt with so many unbelievably rude people on a daily basis. She dealt with acne and I dealt with being overweight . Thanks Dr Berg 😊

    • deestefmorr on February 1, 2023 at 4:27 pm

I have acne and blemishes and I don’t like it, I’m 45. I am so thankful for this to be my only concern, so therefore I don’t worry about my acne, I just seek ways to heal it healthy. Their are many people that have debilitating diseases, my heart goes out to them, not my acne.

@deestefmorr what about when it scarrs you and theres nothing wrong with your diet and you get bullied and made fun of all your life through no fault of your own. Lots of people in this position dare not leave the house due to being stared at and thats just to start with.

  12. Annemarie Kilbourne on February 1, 2023 at 1:33 pm

I had acne in my teens Dr Berg and it distressed me so much. I was put on the worst thing, antibiotics. I then went on to develop Candida Albicans and chronic fatigue in my early 20’s. So wished I’d had this information… I take vitamin D now and I would recommend it to my daughter…

    • jerseygrl5 on February 1, 2023 at 2:13 pm

Me too. Those antibiotics destroyed my health and didn’t do much for the acne. And I too ended up with a systemic candida infection that I cleared up with…………wait for it……………..keto diet.

    • Annemarie Kilbourne on February 1, 2023 at 6:58 pm

@jerseygrl5  horrid isn’t it… having Candida. I went on a very strict diet (going back 30 years ago). It wasn’t keto but it sure helped… absolutely no sugars or processed foods. I think keto is good…

  13. Chris Bullock on February 1, 2023 at 2:23 pm

As a male personally I believe me being lactose intolerant since I was a baby, I feel like I’ve lacked sufficient vitamins like Vitamin D growing up and it had alot to do with my severe acne as a teen and all the way into my adult life at 43 I’ve only gotten it under control in the past 4-5 years. Left with alot of enlarged pores and scaring though.

  14. tick tack on February 1, 2023 at 2:58 pm

I can say personally I’ve had quite bad acne on my face since teenage years, and even in my early twenties I am still suffering from it. I have noticed that, even though it doesn’t go away completely, it gets SO much better when I stop eating sugars from some days, and I treat my face with tea tree oil and hip rose oil. I have also tried hip rose berries infusion and I put it on my face which also helps lots. Some days I still eat some desserts on holidays and some days later I get some bad acne, It’s difficult avoiding it when you have a sweet tooth…

    • sah19 on February 2, 2023 at 11:14 am

A portion of acne can be fungal. So if you avoid oils on your face and in hair products, that could help with the remaining acne. Google ‘fungal acne’ skin care (and makeup and hair care). The Skin Care Science blog in particular was eye opening for me

  15. bettina barry on February 1, 2023 at 3:21 pm

I have been plagued with acne most of my life. As a teen, I was always in the sun, and since I grew up poor, I ate one full meal a day. My skin — face and hair — was very oily. I will say that sugar irritated it, but lack of it never cured it — even with modest food intake. What I discovered in my 50s is that soap and washing my face with any kind was my biggest enemy. Now I rinse in the morning and evening with plain warm water and that has almost eliminated breakouts.
I think stress and lack of sleep do contribute to breakouts and too much sugar. As recommended, I will increase my vit D intake.

  16. MrFreeGman on February 1, 2023 at 3:35 pm

I got rid of my acne that lasted all the way into my 30s without going keto. Definitely not a necessary step. I find that how much sugar I eat had no impact on my skin, whereas eating low quality/highly processed foods and foods with refined seed oils did give me breakouts. A combination of reducing stress, getting more sun and exercise, and getting proper nutrition and sleep are what made my acne go away. Basically, just become healthier, and it will show in your skin.

  17. Intuition23 on February 1, 2023 at 3:35 pm

He missed zinc and a lot of other important factors in clearing up breakouts. I agree with him about fish oils and vitamin A. Different types of acne respond to different treatments. Acne can be due to so many different factors… a genetic tendency of over proliferation of skin cells, pore clogging makeup, food allergies, INCORRECT use of skincare products, etc. He gets around this I guess by saying “typically…”

  18. l s on February 1, 2023 at 5:05 pm

I wish I had had this kind of information when I was young. I had probably the worst case of cystic, inflammatory acne that my doctor had ever seen. Thank you for maybe helping the next generation not have to go through what we went through years ago.

  19. Basel on February 1, 2023 at 5:31 pm

10 years ago I had the worst acne phase in my life (at age 30) along with really bad anxiety issues. Turned out I was deficient in Vitamin D (my level was 12). Got it fixed with supplements and anxiety and acne has gone. My current level is 70 and I have a good mood and a feel of calmness along with a good skin.

  20. Brushstroke on February 2, 2023 at 5:43 am

Honestly, low carb diet and intermittent fasting seems like the preventative cure for almost all ailments. Thank you Dr. Berg for your consistent and constant reminders. It’s not easy for me to change my diet and snacking habits, but I’ll keep working on it.
