The Forgotten Hormone

Progesterone is often associated with women, but what about progesterone in men? A hormonal imbalance caused by low progesterone can be just as problematic for men as it is for women. Find out about the importance of progesterone for men in this video.

2:22 Pregnenolone
3:00 Cofactors for pregnenolone
3:54 Factors contributing to hormonal imbalance

6:45 How to boost testosterone

In this video, we’re going to talk about progesterone in men. Progesterone is a precursor for testosterone and helps maintain healthy testosterone levels. Potential progesterone benefits for men include the following:
•Anti-inflammatory
•Decreases inflammation in the brain
•Increases neurogenesis
•Protects against dementia, Parkinson's, and Alzheimer's
•Anti-depressant effects
•Helps increase the production of sperm
•Helps maintain muscle mass
•Supports the immune system
•Prevents the enlargement of the prostate
•Helps reduce the risk of breast tissue in men

Cholesterol is the raw material for all steroid hormones in the body. Statins block cholesterol and can inhibit your ability to make important hormones, leading to hormonal imbalance. Sardines, organ meats, fatty meat, and whole milk cheese are the best sources of cholesterol.

Cholesterol is turned into pregnenolone, a “happy” hormone that helps increase other hormones. Pregnenolone is the precursor to progesterone.

These 3 cofactors allow you to turn cholesterol into pregnenolone.

1. Magnesium
Many people are deficient in magnesium. Increasing magnesium can often solve low testosterone. Avocados, leafy greens, pumpkin seeds, dark chocolate, or magnesium glycinate supplements are good sources of magnesium.

2. Zinc
Zinc can increase testosterone levels. Shellfish, oysters, and red meat are the best sources of zinc.

3. Vitamin B3
Nutritional yeast supplements are the best source of niacin.

Chronic stress, insulin, and endocrine disruptors can interfere with the biochemical pathways that support healthy hormone balance. Alcohol also decreases testosterone.

Inflammation can negatively affect progesterone in men. Vitamin D can indirectly increase progesterone and testosterone by decreasing inflammation. You need at least 10,000 IU per day! If you have low progesterone or low testosterone, you’ll need around 20,000 IU per day.

If you want to boost testosterone, you need to consume quality protein. Grass-fed red meat is the best source. High-intensity interval training and resistance training stimulate the body to make more testosterone. Avoid overtraining!

So I asked him what about vitamin K² and magnesium stearate.. He said that he doesn’t really think that it will help much But it okay to take the other vitamins….thank you Dr.berg all of my blood work looks like never before especially the LDL cholesterol numbers and Thank you KETO DIET & Dr Ekberg

K2-7 is important to keep calcium out of the soft tissues and in to the bone where it belongs.

    • @sandrad518 on December 2, 2024 at 3:03 pm

Vit D should always be taken with Vit K2-mk7, Magnesium and Zinc.

    • @johnw8510 on December 2, 2024 at 3:04 pm

Years ago I was diagnosed low(18) vitamin D. I was prescribed 50,000 iu’s vit D. I started to get headaches & some muscle/joints aches after awhile which wasn’t at all normal for me. After researching I found out that vit d uses magnesium & can deplete it. I would err on the side of caution & take it. Vit D needs magnesium. Generally people are deficient in it anyways. I take it before bedtime & it helps with sleep, so it’s a win win. If I feel too groggy the next day I reduce the dose slightly until I feel optimal. I’m still working on taking the recommended other cofactor k2. I get some heart palps and nervousness after taking it for a few days. I’ve tried diff doses and different forms. Liquid drops of k2 that I can manage at a low dose seems to be my best choice so far.

    • @mkykta9140 on December 2, 2024 at 3:12 pm

Magnesium stearate is a GMO moldy corn derived bulk junk filler put into capsules or tablets. Magnesium glycerate or magnesium malate would be the better form to take.

    • @julieannmyers8714 on December 2, 2024 at 7:18 pm

      Do NOT take Magnesium stearate…
      Take M. glycinate always…
Take M. L-Theanene for brain health & memory.

@@Adrianbacon-c9qYes, but that doesn’t really matter, one way or another. The fact is that he does a LOT of research behind the scenes before making these videos in order to make more accurate and truthful and useful videos.

I have PTSD, and have been in flight/flight for decades, with hypertension. Several months ago I started 25 mg of progesterone nightly (mixed with vitamin E on the gums). I found I was able to sleep better, and felt a little calmer during the day. I went up to 50 mg nightly, and not only can I sleep through the night, but my BP dropped to the point I was able to stop metoprolol after decades on it. Progesterone, along with TRT (only 100mg/week) have been a game-changer for me.

    • @nohandletobehad on December 2, 2024 at 3:26 pm

You need to try a little bit of magnesium. Maybe 100-200mg per day. That will calm you down in a hurry. It is the electrolyte that creates relaxation

    • @regg858 on December 2, 2024 at 3:41 pm

@@nohandletobehadwhat brand of magnesium do you use? Do you mind sharing, please?

    • @alexsaraceno6144 on December 2, 2024 at 4:08 pm

How is progesterone taken ? Is it by injection, powder form, or pill ? And why the Vitamin E ? Sorry for the multiple questions, but I’m 46, post chemo for Leukemia, and my Testosterone is officially tanked to 199. Trying to rebuild my body.

    • @regaininglife9084 on December 2, 2024 at 5:26 pm

Glad to hear the good news. I have struggled with PTSD in the past and was retriggered a year ago. But I am probably like 70% recovered. I’d urge you to focus more on the root of the problem as a way to achieve long term health. Supplements are good for a short term when you need them but try to work toward actually solving the root of the problem that has caused the imbalance in your life in the 1st place.

Great video, Doc. The benefits you’ve outlined – from brain protection to prostate health – show why men need to pay attention to their progesterone levels too.

  10. @Drhei on December 2, 2024 at 4:39 pm

Great breakdown of progesterone’s role in men’s health. The connection to testosterone brain health and preventing prostate issues is something that doesn’t get talked about enough… It’s crazy how things like stress refined carbs & environmental toxins can throw the whole system off balance. Definitely agree with focusing on nutrient-dense foods and managing inflammation to support overall hormone health. Thanks for laying it out so clearly!

I stopped drinking during the week and just drink on the weekends and my testosterone has doubled. I’m sure eating more protein helped as well.

Now try drinking maybe once a month and your testosterone will thrive even more. Quit alcohol altogether (drink once in a blue moon like special occasions) and you will be top notch
