Today we’re going to talk about the dangers and benefits of baking soda.

Baking soda is sodium bicarbonate. Your body actually makes sodium bicarbonate.

Different parts of the body have different pH levels. Even different parts of your digestive tract require different pH levels.

Sodium bicarbonate helps decrease the acid in your small intestine, which increases the pH and supports important digestive enzymes. If I needed to take enzymes, I would also take baking soda to help activate the enzymes.

Baking soda may also be helpful in certain cases for people with acid reflux or heartburn. However, it shouldn’t be taken often or over a long period of time.

Chronic consumption of baking soda can lead to certain side effects, including:
• Bloating
• Gas
• Acid rebound

A better remedy for acid reflux or heartburn might be betaine hydrochloride or apple cider vinegar. This is because the typical root cause of these issues is actually a lack of stomach acid.

But, if someone has an ulcer or gastritis, betaine hydrochloride or apple cider vinegar will cause irritation. In these situations, baking soda might provide some relief.

Some interesting research is even being done on sodium bicarbonate for cancer.

Baking soda may also be beneficial for:
• Skin allergies
• Sinus problems
• Gout attacks
• Improving athletic performance

Overall, baking soda is a great potential remedy for certain problems. However, it’s also important to ask yourself why you need to take a natural remedy in the first place and work to fix the root cause of the issue.

I’ve been using baking soda and a few drops of hydrogen peroxide to clean my teeth for the last 35 years, and have only had 2 cavities during that period. Thanks for this information, Dr. Berg!

    • DumbAssSpeakingWithMan'sVoice on May 14, 2023 at 10:20 am

Been swishing baking soda and hydrogen peroxide for a few minutes twice a day. Makes for a great feeling of having a clean mouth.

    • Emotionlessxartist on May 14, 2023 at 11:31 am

How much baking soda and food grade peroxide right?

    • Paul Campbell on May 14, 2023 at 11:40 am

@Emotionlessxartist Yes, 3% hydrogen peroxide and a pinch of baking soda is all you need. I drink organic green tea, as well for oral care, as it has been said to neutralize cavity causing bacteria.

So many great uses for Baking Soda. My personal favorites are mixing a bit of baking soda and coconut oil for exfoliating my face for a radiant smooth glow and I have been brushing my teeth with Baking Soda and Hydrogen Peroxide for about 30 years. I am 68 and blessed with great health. Dr Berg definitely assists my wellness journey with his knowledge. Happy Sunday everyone 🌹

I mix coconut oil with baking soda and that is my toothpaste. Been using it for over 10 years, Dr Bergman did a presentation on this and not one issue. Haven’t seen the dentist in 10 years. I also drink filtered water that is deprived of fluoride.

It turns out that if you live a Ketovore lifestyle and cut out all seed oils, sugars, carbs and processed foods then everything works just fine.

When you get gastritis, your gastrologist might tell you to not eat yogurt, but read this very carefully, I had very very acute gastritis after taking antibiotics due to COVID, yogurt relieved all the pain in my guts and literally helped me to cure gastritis completely. Eat as much (natural) yogurt as you can if you have gastritis. My gastrologist told me to not eat yogurt, but I just ignored what she said and ate much as I could.

    • Mac on May 14, 2023 at 11:50 am

When you say “natural” yogurt, what are you referring? Thanks!

    • PROUD GRANDMA on May 14, 2023 at 12:06 pm

Yogurt contains lots of sugars & corn syrup, very unhealthy. The only healthier version is Kefir, made with grains at home or if you hav access to raw cowsmilk or goat milk (in the US its nearly impossible)you can make raw yogurt. But wen I had SIBO, I could not consume ANY probiotics (any, except cabbage) without getting very sick. I had to get rid of the SIBO first.

    • 1Corinthians-13 on May 14, 2023 at 12:35 pm

I have gastritis and eat plain yogurt almost daily. It hasn’t improved my gastritis at all.

I use baking soda to soften my laundry since we have well water and don’t need to use dryer sheets because the baking soda softens the clothes. I also use Bob Red Mill that don’t have the heavy metals in it 😊

Baking soda has been used in TCM for centuries for kidney health. My cat was diagnosed with kidney renal failure in early 2019 and mixing it in her water has basically stopped further deterioration looking at all the six monthly blood tests. She’s 15 and looking likely to see her 18th.

Dr Berg could comment for help on my husbands issue of taking a shot every 3 months of drug to help control cancer in his colon and prostate. Maybe you know what that would be but hopefully you may know why it diminishes greatly his taste buds so that eating is very much a real problem? If you see this and can reveal how he might have healing if possible a vitamin or mineral is being affected and might be responsible for the lack of taste.?

    • Kalthoum Abid on May 14, 2023 at 4:52 pm

      Hi Jacob,
Does your cat takes a medicine such as chlorhydrate of benazeprin that is an inhibitor of Angiotensin conversion enzyme with baking soda or baking soda alone and please at which doses? Thank you.

Thank you Dr. Berg for including the caveats of baking soda. I knew it is good for various usage –but as in most things it should be taken or used.

My wife (an old army medic in the 80s) told me she treated poison ivy for the soldiers with a baking soda paste wrapped in gauze until it dried up. The base hospital radioed her asking where the guys were for their treatment baths (which did not work) and she told the docs what she did and they were blown away. All the rashes gone usually overnight.

    • Kris Kringle on May 14, 2023 at 4:34 pm
