Today, we’re going to talk about the carbohydrate that’s more dangerous than sugar: maltodextrin.
Of all the ultra-processed food ingredients, I consider this one the worst.
Maltodextrin is GMO, refined, and highly processed. It can lead to belly fat, diabetes, and gut inflammation, yet it’s considered safe.
Even though maltodextrin is not a sugar and it’s not sweet, it behaves like sugar in the body. It’s also higher than sugar on the glycemic index.
Maltodextrin is an ingredient in many different products, from chips to seasonings, supplements, and infant formulas. It’s even in certain drinks like light beer, energy drinks, and sports drinks.
Because it’s not classified as a sugar, maltodextrin can also be added to sugar-free products even though it behaves like a sugar.
Maltodextrin is a filler ingredient, and there are loopholes that companies can use to legally add it to their products.
Other names for maltodextrin are dextrin, modified food starch, glucose syrup, corn starch, food starch, and corn syrup.
It’s crucial to start reading the ingredients in your products to avoid dangerous ingredients like maltodextrin.

Wow, the food industry is really killing us…😢
Big phood and big pharma
They kill more people than the military industrial complex.
The biggest shareholder in 2020 of both McDonald’s and Pfizer was ……. Blackrock.
Where killing ourselves?
Always remember… “they” want 500 million people for the world population. No more. So what do they do when the current population is over 8 Billion?

thats why Beer is bad… full of maltodextrin..hence the belly
No,sir. Thank yooou! 🎉
This was helpful. Thank you.

And Thanks Ts too
Does Maltodextrin caused Liver damage?
I’ve been carnivore for about 5 months and am feeding my family mostly whole foods and no sugar. It’s amazing how much smaller my groceries are in the cart now without the boxes of processed foods. Thanks for caring, Dr. Berg.
@pdbrooks2099. I noticed this today I am 3 months now with same changes . ❤️
Thanks Dr Berg for all the healthy advice.
174 days carnivore, and in the best health of my life. Blood results to back it up too. 🥩🥩🥩
Eating a carnivore diet is NOT a good thing. Meat will come back to haunt you. Meat causes sickness.😵😵
you stopped buying fat. the sugar is your friend dr berg is a quackpot
Do you know what’s been pumped into the meat……. good luck.
Ugh.. I really am sick of how much our system allows things to be put in our products that we CONSUME. Even if they aren’t killers, they are slow killers. There’s a whole list of things that we (big food corporations) put in our food that are illegal in Europe and Australia which says A LOT. Thank you for sharing this Dr. Berg
Good point. Here in Australia they haven’t listed Meltodextrin on any of the food packaging that I can see. These big companies are as bad as the cigarette companies were many years ago.
Here in the US we believe in profits over people. It’s sickening (literally and figuratively).
After 20 years abroad, most of that in the US, i returned to my native Romania and i must tell you that the food here is just as bad as in the US. They dont even have to list all the ingredients and a lot of products say “ made in the EU” but you would never know where .
You’re allowing it. You don’t like it? Get off your as$ and do something about it! Stop buying the bad stuff, send letters to manufacturers, contact your representatives, complain to the USDA/FDA and whoever will listen enough to take action!
You’re not some powerless, helpless peon. Go do something!
@@JuneHarriseco we dont do any processed food of any kind. Nor sugar. Wish we could do more than that tho
Thank you, thank you, thank you Dr. Berg! Reminds me of how Dr. Lustig says that if a food product has a nutrition label, it should be considered as a warning label because it is processed and not a whole food.
I would like to see a list of products that actually DON’T use those ingredient so I could buy them and support companies that are trying to do the right thing.
It would be a lot simpler.
Agree. He’s helping but only by half. Tell us brands people. That helps more.
Good point 🤔
Just look for “natural flavorings”. That’s how you know you’re getting poisoned.
It’s called avoiding ALL processed foods except extra virgin olive oil, butter, nonsweet yogurt, cheese, cottage cheese. All other foods should be single ingredient foods.
And the “malto”in maltodextrin, is a wheat byproduct so if you are gluten sensitive, watch out. With all the help from Dr. Berg on cutting out lots of foods, I reached a plateau and when I started reading into gluten, because I cannot handle the stuff, I realized maltodextrin along with other glutens were in some of my supplements. Once I replaced those, I began to feel better and regained command of my diet and road to health.
Would you be kind enough to tell us which brand of supplements you ended with? Thank you.
To be accurate, “malto” is from malted barley not wheat. However, barley does contain 5 to 8 percent gluten.
@@thefpvlife7785 yes, I can take that time. Kirkland fish oil, I take 4 a day all at once, it may be too much for some but I have really stubborn bowels. All the following are as prescribed: Dr Berg D3&K2, dr berg trace minerals, solaray time released vitamin C with rose hips and acerola 1000mg, bulk supplements brand vitamin A 25000 IU, KIRKLAND COQ10 300mg, nutricost Alpha Lipoic Acid 600mg, Doublewood Acetyl L-Carnitine 1000 mg, Kirkland vitamin E 180 mg, Solar B Complex”100”, Dr Ohhira’s probiotics, 5 year fermented formula, garden of life vitamin code raw one for women, they have this for men as well. I double up on vitamin b with benfotamine if I feel tingling or neuropathy, the probiotics seem to work for me but I find it to be different for lots of folks. Also dr Peter Osborne offers gluten free supplements but I find them a bit out of my price range.
@@twm4259 thanks for the correction, I knew it was one of the FDA recognized glutens.
@@twm4259 However , barley gluten , or that from rice or corn is nothing to worry about compared to modern wheat gluten.
I have been avoiding Maltdextrin since I discovered it was in my gluten free gravy mix and was the cause of my tremors. I researched it and found out it was a type of sugar but then found out it was a neurotoxin. Why would something like this be used at all? I was very sad to see it being used in what I would call clean supplements, as a filler. Now I have to check my supplement suppliers aswell as my food. Even toothpaste has it in there! Shocking!
Dadgum! Gotta check all my labels!
Love your content Dr Berg! I have followed vegan, then keto, then to mostly carnivore. Finally landed on Dr Ray Peat’s theme of supporting the mitochondria. This includes natural sugars, not processed sugar but rather honey, maple syrup, cane sugar, and fruits. Meat, dairy and some root veggies that are easy on the GI are also a focus. Seed oils, highly hybridized grains and processed sugars are avoided/eliminated. There’s a wave of interest in this approach. Would love to hear your ideas on this.
In reading the book “The Abascal Way: To Quiet Inflammation” 12 years ago, I learned that while genuine honey & sugar from organic whole fruits is preferable to, say, cane sugar, the body — in terms of insulin release — can’t tell the difference between the sugars… it all causes the body to react the same way once it hits the tongue. I need to find that book and reread it. Like Dr. Berg, author Kathy Abascal explains very intricate processes in a way a layperson can easily understand.
He gave his opinions on honey, on fruits sugars, root vegetables.

Why did he withhold this info for all these years?
What other simple revelation will we see years from now that could have been divulged today?
Thx for the info.
Yes, there are a host of ignorant sheep on this site who want others to do their learning and work for them.
❤ Agreed!
@@tristanwwsd I read at least a year ago when he mentioned the dangers of this. I started reading labels after that to try and avoid it. He probably mentioned it from time to time before that as well which would be sensible because new viewers would be coming on stream all the time.
Thank you Dr Berg, we need information like this to help us navigate through the minefield of destructive processed food dangers. Can you imagine the inability of consumers to find out this information even 20 years ago? Please keep up this tremendously helpful work 🙂
Thanks for bringing this to light, Dr. Berg. I realized many years ago that this ingredient was wrecking my system and causing excessive thirst and frequent urination.
I’ve been telling people maltodextrone is like another word for gluten-sugars for the past decade. This is so much more detailed than what I had learnt, thank you 😊
I used to consume a lot of that via the main supermarkets chicken stock. I would have it straight as a soup with bread. It tasted delicious and I used to have 2 mugs at a time. I did notice that I would get extremely tired afterwards. I was a diabetic type 2 and I was never warned about that until I read a comment of yours some time ago. I have tried to avoid it since.
Maltodextrone
I thought he was going to say gluten.

I have been through 15 years of doctors (VA) telling me they cannot tell me why I am in so much pain and not once was I ever asked about what I eat, nutrition was never discussed, then through my own research I found the AIP, keto, and paleo diets, all of which I have tried. I have dropped 30 lbs, kept it off, and eat no processed foods.
I am still in pain because they let the autoimmune diseases ravage my body for so many years that I am beyond repair, but I am here to tell anyone that will listen to stop eating processed foods, be aware of what are in the foods you do eat, ferment your own foods and stay active, mentally and physically.
Most important, is to love Jesus and know this life is only a very short moment in the eternity that is everyones for simply accepting the Lord as your savior, appreciate the sacrifice he made for us, and reconcile your sins so that you may be in Gods grace, and look forward to the eternal life in the Kingdom of Heaven. Merry Christmas one and all, and start the New Year off right by changing your life as we all know we need to do.
I love this comment, especially the part about Jesus and life being short. Thank you for sharing your wisdom. You are in my prayers. God Bless you!
Amen
Tons of us are in pain.
Just deal with it and don’t complain.

I heard an Indian doctor conversation with his friend about this in a food court more than 5 years ago. He told carbohydrate is the biggest killer theae nowadays. Today I came across this from my admiring Dr Berg, wow..Its likely I gotta believe it.
Thanks Dr.Berg for another life changing information. I can truly speak for not only myself but your followers as well that we appreciate special Doctors such as your yourself who go above and beyond to help us be aware of why and because in the health industry!🙏👏🙌👍
Thank you again for a very informative video. I’ve tried to avoid things such as aspartame, saccharin and Acesulfame potassium for many years now. I’ve recently added trans fats to the avoidance list (mono and diglycerides of fatty acis) which I thought were banned in UK (not the case!) and now I’ll add maltodextrin. I’ve found the best way to avoid most of these things is to basically prepare and cook everything from scratch. I’m also trying to get more nutrition from food rather than relying on vitamin supplements because like you say, a large proportion of supplements have all sorts of nasty additions to them. I really appreciate the information and knowledge you share 😀👍
Very important: this ingredient is heavily used in Shredded cheese. Use block cheese and grate it yourself. It actually tastes better and is cheaper. I’ve also noticed it popping up in bacon for no reason, so keep an eye on that as well.
You try grating cheeses like Cheddar.
So True!
@@SunnySummer777 I tried it a few times using a manual grater, but gave up, as it just clogged the holes. How they grate it in the factory, I’ve no idea.
Maltodextrin really messed up my gut, so I avoid at all cost. Thank you for sharing this information!
I cannot imagine my food journey without Dr.Berg! He is touching lives of Millions of people by his hard work! That’s just amazing :))
