Today I want to cover five nutritional deficiencies that can lead to depression.

Your DNA can influence your mood and cause you to become susceptible to nutritional deficiencies, even if you’re on a fairly good diet.

Vitamin deficiencies that may cause depression:
1. Vitamin B12
The best forms of vitamin B12:
• Methylcobalamin
• Hydroxy B12

2. Folate (vitamin B9)
The best form of folate:
• Methylfolate

3. Vitamin D3

4. Vitamin B1 (thiamine)

5. Zinc

Try taking vitamin B12 and folate together and see if that gives you relief. If it doesn’t, you could move on to the other vitamins.

It’s a good idea to try taking the last three vitamins one at a time, with a few days in between, rather than all at once. This way, you have a better idea of which one you could be deficient in.

Other natural ways to improve depression:
1. Take probiotics
2. Do intermittent fasting
3. Get on the Healthy Keto® diet
4. Get out in the sun
5. Exercise

An Iron deficiency is often overlooked as well. It’s a major contributing factor to depression and can lower levels of neurotransmitters like serotonin. I know way too many people on antidepressants that completely ignored their nutritional status. I blame their doctors. Too quick to reach for drugs when nutrition should be the first step. If you aren’t eating enough red meat, B12 and Iron deficiencies are a given.

    • boop on March 27, 2023 at 3:48 pm

@Mihai-Valentin Serbanmaybe you’re missing a key vitamin or mineral. Have you had your ferritin levels checked? Low iron can cause depression

    • boop on March 27, 2023 at 3:49 pm

@Hung Tranmany people especially those with malabsorption, heavy periods and parasitic infections DO need lots of iron due to these issues. You focusing only on copper is misleading and oftentimes if you have low iron, copper will be high

    • Acidobay on March 27, 2023 at 6:32 pm

@Donna Baardsen Its also disgraceful that people dont utilize the enormous resource of the internet to understand how their body works and just blindly trust a doctor to know whats good for them.

🥚🥩 I can personally vouch for the incredible benefits of incorporating raw egg yolks, medium-cooked red meat, and daily sunshine into my routine! Ever since I started consuming these nutrient-rich foods, I’ve been feeling more energetic and my mood has significantly improved. It’s amazing how egg yolks and red meat are packed with essential vitamins like B12, folate, D3, B1, and zinc. 🌟

🌞 As for the sunshine, I’ve made it a point to get at least 30 minutes of sun exposure every day while exercising outdoors. This not only boosts my vitamin D3 levels but also keeps me feeling revitalized and happy. 😃

Dr. Berg’s advice has truly transformed my life and I’m grateful to have discovered these natural ways to enhance my mental health. 🙌

love your videos. been depressed lately & taking B12 regularly & D3, been more moody & depressed more then ever before. not taking B1 but sure feel like all the symptoms you listed with it. Cut out carbs dramatically from what I was intaking. Not fan of red meats. I had antibiotics bout a week ago it ended so Ill try the probiotic & hope that helps. thanks so much been so full of irritation past week, I don’t like the rage I am experiencing & will try anything to not feel like this. been a battle within my head & feel im going to lose the fight if something does not change. Thanks Dr Berg

    • Jason Chapa on March 27, 2023 at 11:48 am

Make sure you’re taking plenty of magnesium as well. Large doses of D3 can deplete magnesium.

    • ChiEf TiffNaw on March 27, 2023 at 12:00 pm

@Jason Chapa  thanks. Will do. Sincerely appreciate your advice.

    • SusanM on March 27, 2023 at 1:29 pm

I can relate. Are you incorporating any exercise? I’ve been going on at least a 30 minute walk and find it helps some.

    • ChiEf TiffNaw on March 27, 2023 at 1:37 pm

@SusanM  I have not been exercising like I could. I will try that. I’m sure it will help more than I realize, thanks much 😊

  7. TopperPenquin on March 27, 2023 at 11:43 am

Doc, I had no food for two days but the energy I possessed was incredible. I eat I am so slow on my feet. I don’t eat I feel I can walk forever.

    • Humble Italian Chad on March 27, 2023 at 1:06 pm

Intermittent fasting is by far the best diet.

    • phubblewubb phubblewubb on March 27, 2023 at 2:11 pm

Same for me, 5 hours after I eat (no matter what it is) I feel toxic and clogged up. Fasting is the only relief I’ve found too.

  8. Lavern Pitcher on March 27, 2023 at 12:00 pm

I started taking about 2 grams of Creatine daily and for some reason it seems to be helping my depressive and anxiety better than anything.

@Dr. Eric Berg DC tnx. I heard that methylcoblamin dosnt convert to adenslcoblamin which is needed to , not?
And cynocoblamin does convert. I dont know what is the truth but its a question. ?

  12. Google User on March 27, 2023 at 12:28 pm

Dr. Berg, can you please advise (just as recommendation) what type of DNA test I should do to make it comprehensive enough so to cover these abnormal conditions with absorption of vitamins, etc. Can you please somehow make a video or series of videos, like standalone series regarding DNA tests available and purpose of them. Thank you for your genius lectures.

  13. Margaret Cordova on March 27, 2023 at 12:42 pm

When I found you going on 8 years ago Dr. Berg I had severe depression and got on your adrenal formula. At that time I believe it was called the Adrenal day formula and you had a night formula also! It worked immediately on me. I was calm and my husband could not believe what was happening to me! I would walk away from his outbursts instead of retaliating! Lol😃😂I still take your Adrenal formula to this day!!!!!❤

    • Tasha on March 27, 2023 at 1:09 pm

I literally was just given zoloft Friday and haven’t taken them yet since one main side effect is making the depression worse before its better so Im going to try that 1st. Thank you

    • S on March 27, 2023 at 1:37 pm

Margaret no disrespect intended, but I think maybe your husband is the one who should be taking that supplement!😉💙

    • Laura Swann on March 27, 2023 at 6:47 pm

You had to walk away from your husband’s outbursts? Maybe if you left your husband, your severe depression would have healed. You should not tolerate any adult having “outbursts” at you, everybody deserves better than that.

  14. Adrienne M on March 27, 2023 at 1:02 pm

Your output is incredible, Dr Berg. 🙌

Hello! Dr. Berg there is a study by a psychiatrist in the United States, unless I’m mistaken, where he studies the intestinal flora before prescribing medication, according to his study, people who suffer from depression usually have many parasites in the stomach and as this is the second brain it’s like if this noxious environment “transmitted” suicidal, negative thoughts to the person’s mind! Super interesting

    • Robin Hood on March 27, 2023 at 1:36 pm

Kudos! You’re on the ball! You’re also bordering a taboo issue! 👀

    • BC C on March 27, 2023 at 1:58 pm

@Robin Hood taboo because it involves self care instead of pharmaceuticals.

I feel like this video is speaking directly to my soul lol. I recovered from bad food poisoning back in January, lost 15 pounds from dehydration and loss of fluids, had to go to the hospital for one week and they put me on three different antibiotics, one through an IV. It was a long recovery process, but I had to stop working out until I recovered enough. I use to run almost everyday before that. It is now March and I still haven’t got the motivation to workout. I mostly work a lot but when I get off work I just go straight to my video games. Sometimes my trailer will build up with trash and I would do a deep clean every Sunday (just getting up to clean felt like a huge challenge) whereas before I would maintain it everyday. However I managed to keep my weight the same instead of gaining from being a couch potato by not eating much (stopped eating after 6pm), and I feel that could also be a contributing factor to my depression.

  17. Unpetite Mortem on March 27, 2023 at 2:23 pm

Dr. Berg, I only recently discovered you, and I’m very happy I did so! Thank you for the time and effort you put into knowing all of these things and sharing them! I have know for a long time that I wanted to learn and do something like holistic medicine or become an expert with herbs, supplements, and naturally occurring vitamin and aupplements but haven’t been sure exactly what it was. I think so many people need this kind of advice, I also fear that we are depriving ourselves of what we need and filling ourselves with sugar, preservatives, and other useless junk that is slowly killing us. Can you give me some advice on how to learn the things you have learned and be able to truly know it and share it with others? Thank you for what youbdo and how much you care about others and helping them❤

  19. Dixie Jensen Brown on March 27, 2023 at 6:01 pm

Yes these ones are key… with my niece who suffered b12 defiency as a baby and toddler what was discovered when they treated b12 she started to grow; she then had issues with her bones breaking & was discovered a vitamin D defiency then while had casts on (this was twice) she contracted chicken pox. Now as a young adult she had series of tests and discovered she has Lupus… Telling you this there is also connection between b12 and vit D and both work together… For longest time I would take these together with huge improvement. It is interesting a lack of thiamine contributes to huge anxiety issues… Great to know Dr Berg!!! Thanks again…

  20. Samel on March 27, 2023 at 7:14 pm

Guys, I’ve been taking Vitamin D3 over the past few weeks, and recently I really feel like my overall mood is lifted. I’d say that I’m chronically depressed, but the Vitamin D3 has really helped me. Maybe it is some other factors, and it’s just placebo, but I’m definitely going to keep taking it. Especially over these Winter months! 🙂
