Today we’re going to talk about hair loss prevention and how to get thick hair naturally.

A common cause of hair loss is a hormonal issue involving excess DHT, which is a powerful form of testosterone. Typical medications for hair loss work by blocking DHT, but they come with side effects.

Potential side effects of hair loss medications can include decreased libido, erectile dysfunction, and depression.

Excess DHT is a genetic issue for many people. Certain herbs can be beneficial to help thicken hair, but today, we’re going to cover things you can do that can keep genetic variations in check.

How to grow thicker hair naturally:
1. Address hypoxia
• Take vitamin D
• Avoid omega-6 fatty acids
• Consume omega-3 fatty acids (cod liver oil)
• Exercise
• Address anemia if applicable

2. Get plenty of vitamin D
• Take a vitamin D supplment (10,000 to 20,000 IU)

3. Take an l-lysine supplement or consume foods high in l-lysine
• Consume red meat, chicken, eggs, fish, seafood, and dairy
• Avoid nuts, grains, beans, and seeds

4. Fix insulin resistance
• Get on a low-carb diet
• Do intermittent fasting

5. Support healthy estrogen levels
• Consume phytoestrogens (flax seeds and sprouted legumes)
• Support the adrenal glands (take ashwagandha)
• Consume foods high in cholesterol

During having the Covid, my hair was falling out in gobs. It was so depressing and disturbing. The sink was FULL, for weeks and weeks. It got EXTREMELY thin. It has come back some, but definitely NOT totally.

    • Connie Hatten on March 13, 2023 at 6:38 am

@Maria Guerrero yes it was very disturbing! God bless you and keep you ❤️😘🙏

    • Connie Hatten on March 13, 2023 at 6:40 am

@Maria Guerrero yes and it’s like mine went through at least three metamorphosis. Curly too! At one point it was EXTREMELY dry and brittle.

    • P Lee on March 13, 2023 at 7:19 am

Female mid 40s. I had Covid in 2021 and went through 7 months of non stop hair shedding. Shower walls looked like an animal had died on it. Went through depression with so much hair loss and seeing my scalp on the back. I can’t say it’s growing back now but at least the hair loss in the shower has slowed significantly

    • Connie Hatten on March 13, 2023 at 9:12 am

@P Lee I’m so sorry. Yes I definitely understand. Wow. I didn’t see many family or friends talk about this like you and others have shared. I appreciate you taking the time to share it. I hope it gets better. I’ve been using Rosemary Essential oil on my scalp at night before bed. Someone else said take a Biotin supplement. Also, I try to get a healthier shampoo. I do feel it’s an internal issue, but I try anything that I am able to.

  3. Word of Mouth on March 12, 2023 at 11:30 am

Use a gentle but effective hairbrush to brush your scalp thoroughly at least twice a day. Your hair needs good blood circulation. Also go for a good walk most days.

Put your body in an inverted posture, such as the head stand, very safely. Increase the time in this pose slowly to 10 minutes. This apparently reduces hair loss too.

      @Simply Royalty don’t be lazy

    • The Savage Wombat on March 12, 2023 at 10:23 pm

@Travel Guy I don’t have an inversion table. Would repeatedly diving off the roof into the hot tub work?

    • Travel Guy on March 13, 2023 at 12:46 am

@Simply Royalty – Well, that may work – as long as the pressure on your head is not too much because you are straight up and down against the wall. The inversion table is adjustable for varying angles.

    • Simply Royalty on March 13, 2023 at 2:28 am

@Travel Guy ok. Thank you. I’ll try it.

I made a concoction for falling hair, and it seems to be working!
Coconut oil, castor oil, mustard oil, jamaican black castor oil, and fresh rosemary.
Boil all ingredients for a few minutes until the rosemary slightly changes colour.
Apply to your hair overnight (twice weekly), then shower the next day.

    • BakaRaymoo on March 13, 2023 at 4:40 pm

@Max Larson everyone thinks they have oily skin until they realize it’s dry skin that they need to moisturize so it stops overproducing oil

    • BakaRaymoo on March 13, 2023 at 4:42 pm

@P Anagenesis something can’t sound anecdotal. Youre just reusing words you saw somewhere but never learned what they actually meant lmao. You’re just trying to say you’re too lazy to fact check him but want to use big words to sound smart. You have a device that can answer nearly any question in the world and this is how you choose to use it😂

    • BakaRaymoo on March 13, 2023 at 4:47 pm

@Julie S. Hard to say with COVID hair loss as it’s not permanent. Good problem to have though ! I’ve got the same and I’m loving all this hair stuff im learning. My hair looks amazing even though it got thin after COVID. Home made fenugreek/flax hair serum turned my lifelong thin hair strands into thick curly strands. Just boil the seeds in water and keep in a spray bottle in the fridge up to a week. There’s lots of recipes on YouTube for similar things

    • Julie S. on March 13, 2023 at 5:17 pm

      @BakaRaymoo Great advice! Thank you!!

  9. LOVE IS KING💟 on March 12, 2023 at 5:03 pm

    This is a great video💯

We had a family friend who is a hairdresser and she cut all of our hair mom‘s dad’s mine…

And when dad started to lose his hair, he stopped brushing it and washing it. She told him it was the worst thing he could do. She said you need to wash your hair & use your fingertips to massage the shampoo to increase blood circulation in your scalp. & brush your hair everyday, for the same reason, to increase blood circulation in scalp.

    • HyperV 101 on March 12, 2023 at 5:50 pm

Well, it usually depends on why it’s happening though. He might be going through a hormonal change, so messaging his scalp might not help.

    • Spam Mouse on March 13, 2023 at 11:00 am

Massage, yes that is good as good hair comes from good blood circulation. Shampoo, not so much as it’s mostly detergents stripping oils and stressing the skin. Better to use dilute vinegar then rinse.

    • M B on March 13, 2023 at 5:16 pm

@HyperV 101 I totally agree. I’m going through some major hormonal issues from thyroid disease and if i massage my hair at all it falls out. My hair stylist said the same thing, that I needed to massage more for circulation which I understand but not for this condition.

  10. Maiden Minnesota on March 12, 2023 at 5:28 pm

I had a total hysterectomy at age 35, so I have no estrogen, no testosterone, and have been in “menopause” for 23 years already. Needless to say, I’ve been rapidly losing my hair to the point I have to wear a scarf. I lose a fistful in the shower, then another fistful when I brush my hair out. This doesn’t count all the hair that falls out throughout the day. It’s a lot. I’ve recently increased my Vit. D intake from 10,000 i.u. to 40,000 i.u., and I take Berberine as a metformin substitute. I do need to get more strict about the keto diet, however. That’s been hard because there are 4 other people in the house that aren’t keto, and I refuse to cook more than one meal, plus I hate listening to the endless bitching about my keto food, or worse, when I refuse to cook for them. Needless to say, they are my stressors, and make my life a living hell. Maybe someday I can grow my hair back, but I’m at the point of considering a wig.

    • I'm happy on March 13, 2023 at 3:05 am

      WHAT IS metformin?

    • Pamela Timbush on March 13, 2023 at 6:05 am

      @Onthehill
I’m sorry your hair won’t grow back 😔…yes if you don’t catch it in time it won’t. I’m sorry nobody ever discussed it with you! Doctors should have and a hairdresser. I know before I started menopause it started coming out and I’d always had thick hair and I didn’t know why my doctor finally after I took in a freezer bag full to show her cause she doesn’t help like she should sent me to a dermatologist and she said it was menopause 😮😡 I was mad I told her “I’m NOT going through menopause!!!” Then it got worse cause of stress. I lost most of my family and friends since 2019 to 2022 everytime I turned around someone was passing then 12 days another then there was the stuff of 2020.
I decided to get out my old books when I was in Cosmetology yrs ago and I knew it I just had been through so much.
But vitamins and scalp health, good quality shampoo or better yet cleansing conditioner along with low stress does wonders.
I understand your mentality is key as women are hair is our crowning glory.
      Best wishes to you 🙏😊

    • A O'B on March 13, 2023 at 4:45 pm

@Rosetta Khan  I agree. You then have control over how your food is prepared and can avoid nasty oils like seed oils that are so prevalent in most pre prepared and restaurant food. You can also be sure of the quality of the meat and veg that you’re eating too. I much prefer to cook myself and my family. It’s far tastier too, and well worth the effort.

  11. A O'B on March 12, 2023 at 6:06 pm

My goodness, I never understood why more hair ends up in my hairbrush around the time of end of my cycle! Thank you Dr Berg

    • Debbies21 on March 13, 2023 at 1:40 am

Look up dr mindy pelz she has fasting for your cycle & peri & menopause. Eating this way ensures that the hormone levels are appropriate for your age. Meaning fertile years, peri etc

@Debbies21 Thank you! I will. I’m at the ‘peri’ stage now.

My hair grows very slowly and i found out i was lacking in vitamin D . I also had major issues with B12 in the past and was given regular injections to get my B12 back on track. I will monitor my hair growth now as i started taking Vitamin D so it will be interesting if my hair grows. Dr Berg you are a bundle of knowledge and a genius and i really enjoy watching and learning from your videos about the body and how it works and whats good for a health body. keep up the good work. I encourage you to look online, it takes a little getting used to, but I love it. My kids like it too, ha! My 4 yr old says- your beautiful hat! It’s just a calm blue sloppy cap. Matches with anything. Be encouraged, Jesus loves you ❤

Mine is more likely a type of hereditary one (crown area) while in menopause. BTW, I have been taking Minoxidil 1mg every other day for about 1/2 year now, it grows slowly and comes up with some fine hair and not as effective as such but better than nothing. So could Dr Berg please go through more about hereditary hair loss with your future videos? Thanks a lot! 🙂
