Today I’m going to share three common nutritional deficiencies related to sciatica and carpal tunnel syndrome and ways to tell which one might be affecting you most.

Vitamins B1, B6, and B12 are intimately involved in the nervous system and may be behind these painful conditions.

1. Vitamin B6 benefits
• Helps build the myelin sheath
• Helps produce neurotransmitters
• Helps protect sensory nerve integrity
• Helps increase nerve conduction and velocity
• Is involved in the metabolism of the nervous system

Vitamin B6 deficiency causes:
• Taking the wrong form of vitamin B6 in large amounts
• Gut inflammation
• Celiac disease
• Crohn’s disease
• Age
• Certain medications
• Alcohol
• Birth control pills
• Certain genetic variations
• Smoking
• Diabetes
• Excess coffee consumption

* It’s important to take the active form of vitamin B6, pyridoxal-5-phosphate (P5P).

2. Vitamin B12 benefits:
• Helps support nerve regeneration
• Helps support myelin production
• Helps support nerve growth factors

Vitamin B12 deficiency causes:
• Certain genetic factors
• Lack of animal products in the diet
• Low stomach acid
• Excess consumption of folic acid
• Alcohol
• Diabetes
• Malabsorption
• Birth control pills

* It’s important to take the natural form of vitamin B12, methylcobalamin.

3. Vitamin B1 (thiamine) benefits:
• Helps support blood flow to the nerves
• Helps counter the complications of diabetes

Vitamin B1 deficiency causes:
• Diabetes, prediabetes, and insulin resistance
• Excess coffee consumption
• Excess tea consumption

* It’s important to take the fat-soluble version of vitamin B1, benfotiamine.

Herniated discs are the main cause of sciatica (accounting for 80% of cases). Accordingly, when the spinal discs get out of their normal position, the sciatic nerve will be compressed leading to a sharp pain. The same goes for people who have spina bifida or have a tumor or cyst located on the spine

    • Yankee 🌹 Rose on March 17, 2023 at 1:19 pm

@Patricia O’reilly blessings always to you my friend! ❤✝️🍀

@I’m happy wow!! I never knew this, thank you. ❤

  2. Fk Google on March 17, 2023 at 10:16 am

I had a herniated disc and a bulging disc, felt it going down my legs too. Took about 2 months to recover.
Was also diagnosed with cubital tunnel syndrome. Healthy amounts of Vitamin D have helped me out but I still deal with the inflammation. The comparison is night and day though.

    • I'm happy on March 17, 2023 at 12:19 pm

Herniated Disc (English name – Herniated Disc) is a phenomenon in which one or more discs located between the back and neck vertebrae are damaged, slipping out of their original position, causing compression on the spinal cord and nerves. in the spinal canal, leading to local pain and sensory disturbances.

Vitamin B6, also known as pyridoxine, is one of the vitamins in the vitamin B complex (Vitamin B-complex) family. All B vitamins, including vitamin B6, play an essential role in a variety of physical and psychological functions. They help maintain nerve function, liver function, metabolism, increase energy as well as good for your skin, hair, nails.

    • jdnw85 on March 17, 2023 at 3:21 pm

@Dr. Eric Berg DC what about the. B6 in nutritional yeast? Is it harming us?

  5. Dan White on March 17, 2023 at 10:26 am

I had carpal tunnel surgery many years ago in both wrists. Had no idea carpal tunnel syndrome was from this vitamin deficiency.

    • Jessica Leslie-byrn on March 17, 2023 at 10:43 am

I pretty much only eat meat and potatoes everyday not sure how I could have carpet tunnel cause you wouldn’t think I could have a b vitamin deficiency

    • Howard Petterson. the dot connector on March 17, 2023 at 10:50 am

@Jessica Leslie-byrn that’s what I thought. I over extended my wrist while picking up a sheep to hang up for dressing.
The doctor called it a forced ulnar deviation

Carpal tunnel can be caused from repetitive motion on the job, workmans comp. I had it in both hands. Had surgery on both wrist. Don’t fall for vitamin deficiency.

    • Howard Petterson. the dot connector on March 17, 2023 at 1:27 pm

@buddy tipton yup. The sheath has a poor blood supply and takes ages to heal. I suppose it is nature saying stop doing this.
I have been holding my arms out in front of me and opening and closing my hand and fingers as quickly as possible for 2 minutes. You can feel the blood surging to hand.
This doesn’t hurt the afflicted area but gets the blood going. I do it daily and a lot more in winter

  6. Denise Vrant on March 17, 2023 at 11:04 am

I have lost 40 pounds in 9 months, stopped having heartbeat skipping issues, and stopped needing drugs for Ulcerative Colitis, all from your videos. Keto with IF, eating two meals a day has worked for me! Thanks for the work you do. It would be nice to get my daughters to do this diet, but they will have to come to their own decisions at their owm times.

Can you please make a video about dyshidrotic eczema this is some thing I’ve been dealing with the past 10 years.

  8. Emphyrio on March 17, 2023 at 11:11 am

This explains why my sciatica dissapeared about 6 years ago when I changed my diet to Keto and IF. My eyes improved as well. Night blindness and nearsightedness vanished too.
This combo and my introduction to a variety of vitamins, ACV, etc. cleared up tons of things…

    • I'm happy on March 17, 2023 at 12:18 pm

Night blindness, sometimes referred to as night blindness, is the common name for retinal degeneration. Night blindness is characterized by reduced vision, narrowing of vision at night or in the dark, where there is insufficient light. The disease causes serious effects on the daily life and work of the affected person. Vitamin A deficiency is one of the important causes of night blindness. So why does vitamin A deficiency cause night blindness?

Great video as always. Thank you dear Doctor Berg.

    • Tnijo O on March 17, 2023 at 3:23 pm

Weird! Before I found out I have hypothyroidism I had horrible sciatica and I haven’t had it since I’ve been on levothyroxine. I never knew there was a link. I wonder how it works.

    • Dr. Eric Berg DC on March 17, 2023 at 7:07 pm

      You are very welcome

  11. HARPLD LEWIS on March 17, 2023 at 11:54 am

Excellent video! I now know that I actually gave myself a sciatica outbreak a few years back by taking a B6 supplement. Obviously at the time I was not sure that it was the B6 that caused the outbreak, but with the passage of time I have come to suspect that the B6 was the culprit. This video therefore serves as confirmation for what I suspected.

  12. Winston on March 17, 2023 at 12:56 pm

I had right shoulder pain I attributed to an overuse injury…started watching your videos, changing my diet, and exercising, and then I took Tudca based on one of your vids – in a week the pain was gone! Backed up bile duct. God Bless you Dr. Berg you are a gift to us all.😇

    • Parastoo Nasr on March 17, 2023 at 5:44 pm

      What is Tudca?

    • Melanie Starkey on March 17, 2023 at 6:02 pm

@Prapti mishra there is a video by doctor Berg called the benefits of Tudca

    • Melanie Starkey on March 17, 2023 at 6:03 pm

@Parastoo Nasr there is a video by dr. Berg cold the benefits of Tudca

    • Ottee2 on March 17, 2023 at 6:13 pm

@Parastoo Nasr , TUDCA stands for Tauroursodeoxycholic acid.
TUDCA is a water soluble bile acid. It shows great potency in treating cholestasis (bile acid backup in the liver) as the water soluble bile acids counteract the toxicity of regular bile acids. Can also protect and rehabilitate the liver, and in general protects cells; very promising molecule.

  13. A O'B on March 17, 2023 at 12:58 pm

I suffered from sciatica when expecting my first child. No medic mentioned this vital piece of information. It is unbelievable that our so called medical experts do not have this knowledge. It’s eye opening.

    • jc on March 17, 2023 at 1:06 pm

Same here! I haven’t had it for a few years now thankfully. I qlso had carpel tunnel during that time too.

    • Manjula H on March 17, 2023 at 3:03 pm

How do we resolve this problem

    • A O'B on March 17, 2023 at 3:16 pm

@Manjula H  In my experience, improving your diet and strengthening your core stomach muscles as well as ensuring you have sufficient B vitamins in your diet, as Dr Berg highlights.

    • Manjula H on March 17, 2023 at 4:58 pm

      @A O’B ok thanks 👍

I have sciatic nerve from my hip to toe’s right now going on 3 weeks, never had it before. Been taking heaps of B vitamins last couple of months and guess what? It’s all the inactive b vitamins like Dr Berg is saying. Amazing, think we are buying the right vitamins and it’s the opposite. Thank you Dr Berg . P.s I just threw them in the bin and I will go buy the active B vitamins. It all makes sense now. 😅

  16. Paul Campbell on March 17, 2023 at 2:10 pm

There was a doctor 17 years ago on late night radio who advocated the first two vitamins along with folic acid for carpal tunnel syndrome (which cured mine). I recommended the same twice-daily treatment to an elderly man who could not straighten his back, and he came back and thanked me when it cured his problem.. Great information, Dr. Berg!

    • Manjula H on March 17, 2023 at 3:06 pm

      How to resolve it ?

    • Heidi Misfeldt on March 17, 2023 at 5:51 pm

      @Manjula H
According to Dr. Berg, fix your diet and take the best vitamins. Obviously it takes a good long while to reverse nutritional deficiencies, so do not give up easy. Not at all.

    • DeLaVille on March 17, 2023 at 7:03 pm

Make sure you take methylated forms not synthetic when taking folic acid.

  17. Saltanat Berdikeeva on March 17, 2023 at 3:12 pm

One of the things that really helped me address sciatica and lower back pain issues, especially after having two kids, is weight lifting. I used to think that lifting while the back is aching will make it worse. But at least in my case heavy lifting with the right posture actually helped me get rid of the pain. And yes, Dr. Berg is totally right about the B vitamins. I upped my B vitamins, especially B12 after having kids, and it made a huge difference to how I felt.

  18. The Bogcast on March 17, 2023 at 5:04 pm

I have been dealing with debilitating sciatica and wrist pain for years now. Does anyone have any suggestions on which brands/products worked for you best (B6, B12, B1)? I feel like this could be the missing link. Thanks Dr. Berg for another great video!

  19. Sarah S on March 17, 2023 at 5:27 pm

I had 4 different problems with L4-L5 vertebrae. Had surgery in 2017 to fuse these and widen the space where the disc had been. I was still occasionally having sciatic nerve symptoms. My functional doctor put me on Vit B complex (I use Swanson”s Activated B-Complex). Just checked and it has every one you just talked about and more. I am mostly vegetarian due to meat sensitivities-that’s a whole other issue. Nice to know I not only feel better but there is science behind what is working for me. Love your videos.

  20. Chantal Ruiz on March 17, 2023 at 7:17 pm

You don’t know how happy this video makes me! I’m 33 and I’ve suffered of sciatica since I was 18. It has only gotten worst. I will start taking my vitamin 6 from now on!! Forever thankful for you Dr. Berg! ❤
