Today I want to cover a very specific type of vertigo called benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV).

This type of vertigo makes you feel like you’re spinning when you’re not, and it’s the #1 cause of dizziness.

This condition is typically caused by a calcium crystal that has broken off and is in the canals of the inner ear that control equilibrium and balance.

There is a simple test called the Dix-Hallpike test that you can do at home to help determine if you have this type of vertigo.

Check with your doctor before doing this test to ensure you don’t have an issue with your cervical spine that could prevent you from rotating your neck.

After you perform the test and determine which side is causing a problem, you can try the Epley maneuver. The goal of this maneuver is to create different motions to slowly move the calcium crystal out of the ear.

An interesting systematic review and meta-analysis done in 2020 showed an association between low vitamin D and BPPV.

Vitamin D supports the absorption and transportation of calcium. It's important to note that some people have a genetic issue that causes normal vitamin D levels in the blood but not the tissues.

I believe one of the best natural remedies for BPPV is a combination of vitamin D3 and vitamin K2. For every 10,000 IU of vitamin D3, you would want 100 mcg of vitamin K2. Talk to your doctor about taking 50,000 IU of vitamin D3 and 500 mcg of vitamin K2 once a week for BPPV.

Her a chriopractec adjustment on the atlas and c1 it’s fixed my vertigo

    • Afkg3ar on April 27, 2023 at 3:22 pm

@Nancy Roger yup. I’ve had it too twice in my life. It was really bad. Throwing up all night/day because of the fast spinning. Only the exercise of laying on a bed and doing that head movement thing twice a day made it go away after 10 days

Wow, that was the same position I was lying in when this condition first attacked me. It was crazy. My horizontal and vertical went crazy flipping back and forth. It was first thing in the morning calm and and serene from waking up and I turned my neck to the right with a pillow under my neck and upper shoulder, to look towards a clock, I turned my head back and BAM all that hit me and I went into dry heave vomit mode. It was pretty wild 😂😂😂

    • M Parker on April 27, 2023 at 4:20 pm

This is exactly what happened to me this time a year ago, I rolled to the right to check my clock, and quicker then I can describe I was being thrown from wall to wall. Violent was the only word I had to describe it. I had no idea what was happening, talk about ice cold fear. I thought maybe I had a brain tumor. I had no idea what vertigo was about. Three and a half months ago I finally stopped having symptoms. And I’m trying not to live in fear of it returning.

    • SFzip on April 27, 2023 at 4:29 pm

Vertigo feels like being out of sync with Earth’s rotation, which spins at approximately 1,040 mph at the equator. I wonder if one could experience vertigo at the North or South Poles, where the rotation speed is significantly less.

    • Frank Taylor on April 27, 2023 at 5:18 pm

@Blazer Chris Mine lasted about a year. I have had scarier conditions that stayed longer, but this is severely disorientating. Your inner vertical and horizontal goes really haywire and you quickly go from a serene nothing to what seems like a 100 mph in your head. Stay well!

    • Frank Taylor on April 27, 2023 at 5:24 pm

@SFzip Hmm, that would be an interesting question. I live at 36° North and I believe I read the earth spins about 750 mph at these latitudes. Fastest at the equator of course.

My husband suffered with debilitating vertigo for 20 years. One morning we were about to have our morning coffee and he said, “I don’t think I’m going to have coffee today because I start feeling bad after I drink it”. He did not experience any vertigo from that day since and it’s been about 1year. He found that any consumption of caffeine, whether it be tea, coffee, soda, would bring on the vertigo. I hope this helps someone, God bless❤

    • archie wilson on April 27, 2023 at 6:56 pm

@Monir Yousefian I’m just using Spring Valley 250 mg B1. Says thiamine mononitrate. Says product of China on it too. It’s probably not the best but it definitely helped me. I only take half a pill now and I also take the D3 with K2. I stopped drinking alcohol as well, along with limiting caffeine and chocolate.

    • leavesofchange on April 27, 2023 at 7:06 pm

@“JCX”  DAO (diamine oxidase) enzyme breaks down histamine. Coffee blocks DAO. Vitamin C aids DAO, therefore a bit of vitamin C (can be from natural source such as cranberry juice or cabbage) should help. My best advice to see if you have histamine issues is to go on a low-histamine diet. If it relieves you, you probably do.

Yes, my Mom had an inner ear condition called meniere’s disease, and the symptoms were more pronounced after consuming coffee. Bonine, a medication used for preventing sea sickness, would help, but, it had to be taken immediately at the on set of symptoms. Talk to your doctor before taking any medications.

My spouse had this years ago and we were terrified he was having a stroke. The epley maneuver worked. He used it occasionally naybe twice a year, but since going on Vit D3 plus K2, he hasn’t had any issues. It’s been many years.

  7. ml on April 27, 2023 at 12:39 pm

I had this happen to me several years ago. I told my doctor that it feels like you’re on a boat in the ocean during a hurricane. She said it’s the most benign condition someone can have that makes you feel like you are dying. She is right. She got me to do the lying back while turning my head and watched my eyes. It was on the right side and the right eye is the eye that showed the reaction. It was horrible. I couldn’t close my eyes or be in a dark room and turn over in the bed without feeling like I was in a violently rolling boat. I did the maneuver and helped some, but it took me months to get over it completely. I still sometimes have some dizziness, but it’s a piece of cake compared to the BPPV. I take your Vitamin D3/K2 supplement, but I will up the amount for now.

    • archie wilson on April 27, 2023 at 2:27 pm

draw the mark of an X on a piece of paper, cellotape it to a door at eye level……….Then take step back and fixing your eyes on the X,then very quickley turn your head right and left 20times,keeping your eyes fixed on the X at all times….This eye exercise relieves the symptoms for me, and maybe for others that get vertigo. What triggers vertigo for me is when I am moving from one place to another in quick succession.

  8. David Motch on April 27, 2023 at 12:43 pm

This makes so much sense given my case and symptoms!!

I have crohns, vitiligo, and now a severe hearing loss caused by a vertigo episode. I also have the sensation of something in my throat which you’ve mentioned can be solved with calcium lactate.

It’s very clear vitamin D is a major key here and your videos are helping me put all these puzzle pieces together to heal naturally. Thank you!

  9. Wardrobelion on April 27, 2023 at 12:54 pm

👍And in some cases, however, the cause is the atlas or axis out of alignment in your neck. This causes pressure on your trigeminal nerve and can also cause headaches or migraines. It is more of a disconnect feeling than a dizziness. Great lesson Dr. Berg. Exactly why I crave ice cream and salads and greens when congested. Lots of things can irritate nerves. Every surgery causes nerve damage. Scar tissue can even irritate nerves. Thank you Dr. Berg.

    • Nikkyshair Ades on April 27, 2023 at 3:35 pm

Exactly I started having nerve burning and some symptoms after 2 C Section

    • Truth Seeker on April 27, 2023 at 3:42 pm

Did you experience this neck issue, and how was it treated? Are you okay now?

    • your connection on April 27, 2023 at 4:14 pm

Regarding the atlas or axis being out of alignment, this is common with people with TMD where they have the forward head posture. Doing posture exercises, along with doing head and neck exercises slowly twice per day helps – which also helps with hearing. In addition, put olive oil drops in your ears on a regular basis and it will dislodge wax in your ears if that’s also part of the issue.

I’ve got it twice after using cheap in-ear headphones. 1 time it lasted a week and a half and the other just under a week and was intense! The two incidents were about a year or so apart but thankfully I noticed the pattern. Never used them again and never had that problem again. Hopefully this helps someone.

After Covid, I suffered for months with spinning inside my head and spinning the room. Both were going, sometimes in opposite directions.
On D3 for years, but it certainly got better after I added K2.

    • Rhonda Duran on April 27, 2023 at 4:25 pm

It can be brought on by a virus as well. I still suffer from vertigo occasionally

  12. Alycia Hall on April 27, 2023 at 2:16 pm

I started developing this last month. I was so certain I was vitamin D deficient, so I got my blood work done. Turns out not only am I not deficient I am way too high to the point where it could be very dangerous. The moment I stopped supplementing, I felt a lot better, and my vitamin D levels are probably going down to normal now. Just FYI, overdoing vitamin D can lead to the same calcium issues as low vitamin D.

    • S Bubb on April 27, 2023 at 5:48 pm

@lagunafishing Can’t be that rare as I’ve had issues from D at 5kIU per day and I’ve seen a lot of anecdotes of others having issues too

  13. Tom Rommelmann on April 27, 2023 at 2:47 pm

I’m glad you mentioned K2! A couple years ago I was starting to have vertigo upon lifting my head off the pillow in the morning. This was happening for several days in a row. I then learned that certain foods could exacerbate the problem (like coffee or chocolate) and in my case I thought it might have been dark chocolate (because I didn’t drink coffee) so I stopped it completely.
Having heard that calcium crystals could be the cause, and knowing that K2 helps drive calcium out of soft tissue and into the bones, I immediately upped my intake of K2 by adding an extra 100 mcg. Since I was already taking 5K to 10K of D3 I didn’t bother increasing my D3 intake. In any case the problem immediately went away, never to return. And to top it off I can still eat a couple squares of 85% dark chocolate every day with no issues but I have continued to take the extra vitamin K2 along with the vitamin D3.

I’ve had this thing twice in my life. The last time was last year. The only cure for this seemed to be doing certain movements like you showed in this video. Both of those incidents lasted about 10 days total before it was totally gone. Every time I’d move my head even a little bit my eyes would do exactly that and the whole room was spinning fast multiple times a second. So I was throwing up a lot and only a specific exercise helped to get rid of it.

I don’t understand how people here in the comments say that they or someone they knew had this for years. It’s must’ve been mild for them because in this condition you literally can’t even walk without hitting walls and throwing up right after because where ever you look everything spins so fast just by moving your head even a little bit

    • LemonBar on April 27, 2023 at 3:29 pm

Woke up to room spinning violently. I have a colorful painting on my wall and I could see the all the colors on it whirrling around the room at 10,000 miles per hour. Only thing that stopped it was sitting up. Threw up for the next few hours literally crawling to the toilet because I couldn’t walk straight. Was the worst thing I ever experienced. I slept sitting up for the next week because I was terrified of laying down. Sleeping sitting up gets achy. For 3 days after the vertigo, every time I turned around even slightly I would get nauseous. Packed fresh ginger to chew on at work to help with the nausea. Like you said, I don’t know how people live with it for years, must be milder than what I experienced. Now when someone tells me they have vertigo it literally horrifies me. I have PTSD from it.

    • Afkg3ar on April 27, 2023 at 4:22 pm

@LemonBar Yeah. I sat down and tried to sleep like that too the first time i had it because i was too afraid to move my head in any direction lol. But after going to the doctor and getting a prescription for nausea the days went easier, even though everything was spinning still I didn’t feel the overwhelming urge to vomit.

  16. HM MOB on April 27, 2023 at 3:25 pm

Note that the Dix-Hallpike test and the Epley maneuver are for diagnosing and treating BPPV in the posterior canal. There are two more canals in each inner ear that can be affected by BPPV, and there are corresponding test/maneuvers for those two, as well.

This is amazing. I was diagnosed with BPPV about 15 years ago. I woke up one Sunday morning and the room kept spinning for no reason. I went to the ER because I was so scared. They said it was caused by a combination of a sinus infection and me recently traveling by plane. They prescribed meds that only made me sleep but I was down for over 3 weeks. Finally, an ENT did the epley maneuver to put my crystals back in my inner ear. I have suffered with vertigo off and on ever since. This makes me feel so much better. Thank you for the work that you do.

This makes a lot of sense for me personally. I had this version of vertigo in the winter of 2019-2020 and was so freaked out because it was happening to me all of a sudden at the age of 47. Because of the cold I was indoor all the time. These days I take the 10,000 IU with K2 pills daily. I feel great! Thank you doc!
