10:30 Learn more about cataracts!

More and more people are developing cataracts as they age. Typical treatments for cataracts have side effects, so today we’re going to talk about natural alternatives for cataracts.

The eyes are highly affected by your blood sugar levels. When your blood sugar is high, it creates a lot of oxidative stress in different tissues, including the eyes.

Our bodies produce antioxidants to protect against this oxidation and free radical damage. But certain things, like age and diet, can cause our bodies to make fewer antioxidants.

However, plants also make potent antioxidants that we can take advantage of to help counter the effects of oxidative stress. The two categories that we’re focusing on today are carotenoids and anthocyanins.

Foods high in carotenoids:
• Yellow, orange, red, and purple vegetables
• Pasture-raised egg yolks
• Grass-fed meats

Foods high in anthocyanins:
• Bilberries
• Blueberries
• Blackberries
• Chokeberries
• Black currant
• Red cabbage

Here is the best natural remedy to potentially help with cataracts.

Ingredients:
• 1 cup berries
• 1 cup kefir (grass-fed, whole milk, unsweetened)

Blend the above two ingredients, using any of the above berries you like best. Use water to thin the mixture if needed, or consume with a spoon. Have this once a day.

Along with this remedy, make sure your diet is very low in fructose, sucrose, and milk.

Other natural remedies for cataracts:
1. NAC drops (N-acetylcarnosine)
2. Egg yolks
3. Oculotrophin PMG

My mom (age 76!) noticed her vision changes proved her cataracts were gone (they had been very early, minimal but noticeable) after a month of OMAD and maybe 3 ~45 hour fasts so we think autophagy wiped them out.

    • AllHim Withme on April 4, 2023 at 12:51 pm

@ANDREA MARTI Hi, Andrea, it’s an acronym for One Meal A Day, basically a 23 hour fast per day with 1 hour eating window.

    • AllHim Withme on April 4, 2023 at 12:53 pm

@critical thinking AGREED! I, too, am fasting regularly for the first time in my 51 years and *_MAGICAL_* is really the best word to describe the results.

I was told 4 years ago that I had the beginnings of a cataract in one of my eyes. Because of a change in insurance I ended up going to a different eye doctor a few months ago. After the exam I asked her if she saw any sign of a cataract. She said she hadn’t. I told her that I had eliminated a lot of sugar out of my diet. She kind of brushed it off as being a non factor and implied that the other doctor might not have really been seeing what he saw. I know it’s not definitive, but I think cutting out the sugar was a benefit. Also, I have my own chickens that I allow to free range.

    • Space Ted on April 4, 2023 at 4:49 am

If you switch looking at a book from one eye to the other the eye with the cataract should look yellowish !!!

I had gout in my feet for 3 plus years, I was prescribed Naproxen and Alluprinol , which helped a bit , but would still flare up really bad , I decided to cut out all sugar, Especially Chocolate bars , Mars bars etc , I only had a small bar per day
but with donuts once a week , I think I overdid it , for me anyway, So one Monday morning I cut out buying any Mars bars or the like , cut out anything with sugar in or on top , and by Friday my gout had completely disappeared ! I kept to this for 6 months, then had 1 or 2 bars spaced over the week , and found I could tolerate that.  I have been free of gout for 10 years now , and the only time I get a slight problem is over Christmas, to many sweet things , so I have to cut out again for a while, and all ok again, Suger really is poison for the body !!!

I have had multiple lasik operations on my eyes fifteen years ago.
Would the information in this video apply to some of the complications such as dry eyes and visual haloes?

    • peace and love on April 4, 2023 at 4:57 am

Probably yes, try IF and this diet

    • Mad Headz on April 4, 2023 at 2:15 pm

I’ve read from a multitude of sources that your mouth and eyes use vitamin A in the healing process. Low levels of vit A have been attributed to probable causation of some mouth ulcers and eyelid conditions that can ulcerate. But he careful what advice you take. It’s your skin in the game. Diet and lifestyle would have to be the best preventative but it’s all a numbers game with many variables.

  8. Bernice Jones on April 3, 2023 at 11:11 am

Boy is this ever tailor made for me!! I had cataract surgery a couple years ago and have been having awful problems, so I am big time appreciative of this information can’t thank you enough Dr Berg

    • Bernice Jones on April 3, 2023 at 2:10 pm

@Naps i had laser surgery and pretty much right after I felt that a little bit must have been missed like a bit of something irritating but as time went on I had to live with it, the left eye later on was fine. 2 years later a visit to my regular eye doctor showed an abnormality in the shape of the thing rather than the nice curve in the left eye the right eye is flatter and a little jagged looking. Now I have been having styes in the right eye just got one cleared and a few months later again both in the right eye. Used polysporin and took oil of oregano by mouth but eye situation grew into a huge red pus mess then infection spread to the left eye and was itchy and the skin all around the eyes red and scaley like a raccoon. Evidently this is dry eye so I used special wipes and maybe overdid it made it worse so I won’t use them again. I use visine and spray special water

    • Darlene Gera on April 3, 2023 at 4:35 pm

@Bernice Jones what kind of special water do you use. I have dry eye and was told to use Systane drops 2 x’s a day. I’ve been told I need cataract surgery..will this make them dryer? Also does Areds vitamins help dry eyes?

    • Pam Kunz on April 4, 2023 at 12:43 am

My aunt and I both used the wipes for dry eye and both of us experienced problems. My Dr. recommend Systane (purple box) 2 or 3 x daily which has helped.

  9. Selenian02 on April 3, 2023 at 11:26 am

I had cataracts at age 40 due to inhaled steroids for asthma. Had surgery on one eye years ago and my docter said I need to have it in done in my other now as the cataract has grown. I’m scheduled to see an doctor later this month regarding surgery. Perfect timing Dr. Berg

    • peace and love on April 4, 2023 at 4:48 am

Did you use the inhaler for a long time?

    • challo213 on April 4, 2023 at 12:59 pm

      @peace and love yes

    • Mama Mia on April 4, 2023 at 7:07 pm

I rid of Asthma after few times of 3 days dry fasting and not using inhaler over 10 years, when feel uncomfortable cough, fasting again.

  10. Shirl on April 3, 2023 at 11:28 am

YOU ARE 100% CORRECT! I do not have them and eat/taken the vitamins you suggested for years! Just my contribution to the “study.” My husband, on the other hand, got them, He did have the surgery, and suffered from dry eye and extreme light sensitivity for months, but fortunately, he is 100% now and has been for many months. Thank you, Dr Berg!

  11. Sandi B on April 3, 2023 at 11:35 am

I’m a type 1 and had cataract surgery years ago and I have very dry eyes now. Wish I had found you dr berg before I had surgery. I’m trying to keep my blood sugar low but some days it goes over 400 if I eat extra carbs but I’m dont want to go blind. Thanks for all your work.

    • Behold the Lamb of God on April 3, 2023 at 3:50 pm

It is detrimental to get off carbs and sugars as much as possible. Dr. Berg has a keto video for beginners. Try it I’m sure you will like it.

    • journeylvr on April 3, 2023 at 4:36 pm

Taking high dose Krill Oil can help dry eyes. I also have taken Cod Liver Oil for dry eyes. Still use Systane Lubricant Non Preservative eye drops. That helps, too…

    • Susan Mphiwa on April 3, 2023 at 5:28 pm

@journeylvr how do you use codliver oil for dry eyes.thank you in advance

    • Jetthead18 on April 4, 2023 at 1:39 am

Get the cataract surgery. Dr Berg won’t have to live your life with you blind. You have to live the rest of your life like that.

    • Cynthia Shores on April 4, 2023 at 7:32 am

I had dry eyes before cataract surgery. Had both cataracts removed and still have dry eyes – thank you inflammation! Take Krill oil capsule at bedtime, use moisturizing eye drops, etc. Astaxanthan is good for the eyes.

I had a personal friend of mine whose little dog was completely blind from cataracts. He literally had to put the dogs face in his food bowl for him to find it. He purchased some REAL castor oil. He put some in his dog’s eyes everyday and waited 30 minutes and cleaned the dogs eyes with a wet towel. After several months the cataracts where completely gone and the dog can now see. I always thought I might try that before having surgery

They are really good. They stabilized my cataract. I am not too good with eating less chocolate and home made cake but I eat lots of veggie and salads and fish.

    • Grace Cotton on April 3, 2023 at 8:15 pm

@Marie-Joelle Raussou Very encouraging that you have benefited from NAC. I have been using Can-C since November, and expect to continue their use until next November when I go for another test.

I’m 71 just had cataract sugery on my right eye, my vision was so bad 20/100 blurry and now I have 20/25
My left eye is 20 40 I been using Can C it does slow down the progression . I eat very well and take tons of high quality vitamins – I was a runner for 40 years out in sun didn’t help !
It is amazing though that cataract surgery is very successful now compared to even 10 years ago ¥

    • 47retta on April 4, 2023 at 6:09 pm

Lately you have mentioned oxidative stress in some of your videos. You tell us that oxidative stress is a bad thing, especially as we age. I am glad that you are reinforcing or confirming what I have know for about ten years. Your examples are specific to the video topic, and teach more about the harm of oxidative stress.
    Thank you

    • Integrity Shines on April 4, 2023 at 4:21 am

I had early cataract in one eye and it went away after I cut out the sugars and I reduced my intake of refined carbs/ processed foods. I also did the Bates eye exercises, the swinging one for a few mins like 4 x week ( great for the eye accessory muscles). My vision is more crisp now and I don’t need to wear glasses for night driving .
