15:35 Learn more about your gut health!

Today we’re not just going to talk about what you can do if you have an autoimmune disease, but what's really behind autoimmune diseases.

Various things have to occur at the same time for someone to develop an autoimmune condition.

Autoimmune triggers:
1. A vitamin D deficiency
2. A virus, bacteria, or pathogen
3. Exposure to something that weakens your immune system
4. Stress
5. The wrong diet
6. A genetic weakness

Even though various factors can lead to an autoimmune disease, vitamin D deficiency is at the heart of this condition.

Top causes of a vitamin D deficiency:
• A genetic weakness
• Obesity
• Insulin resistance
• Darker skin
• Less exposure to the sun
• Aging

Vitamin D controls the immune system, and it can either boost or suppress certain parts of the immune system.

Inflammation is also a key factor involved in autoimmune disorders, but there are important things you can do to turn off the inflammatory process.

The best natural remedies for autoimmune conditions:
• Vitamin D
• Omega-3 fatty acids (while avoiding omega-6 fatty acids)
• Cod liver oil
• Curcumin
• Blueberries
• Maitake mushrooms
• St. John’s wort

When I was Dx with fibromyalgia, I also had a low Vit. D level. I have also noticed increase in my energy when I’m low as well. Since that time, I supplement and also do low carb. Thank you

    • De K-Hall on December 29, 2022 at 5:24 pm

My psoriasis has cleared up my 95% since ingesting no sugar and low carbs.

    • Olivia Rangel on December 29, 2022 at 10:03 pm

What helped you with your fybromylagia?

    • V. H.L. on December 29, 2022 at 10:58 pm

@De K-Hall Just taking sugar out of the diet makes a lot of difference. It surprised me how much.

    • De K-Hall on December 30, 2022 at 2:34 am

@V. H.L. I know! I didn’t think I ate that much sugar and carbs until I had to think about it. We eat clean scratch cooked food so I was surprised at how much there is in food and little we should have.

    • Wyatt Family on January 1, 2023 at 12:47 am

I use Curcumin as a treatment for Ulcerative Colitus ( my body couldn’t tolerate the prescribed drugs), it has also had an additional benefit of substantially reducing pain from my Fibromyalgia, and improving my skin. Amazing natural treatment. Curcumin is a part of Tumeric which is widely used in Indian cooking.

Thank you Dr. Berg. I think the reason why so many people are deficient and are not in the greatest of health has to do with physicians who do not talk about nutrition nor do they run vitamin panels with their patients. I went to a doctor recently who flat out told me they are not trained in nutrition in medical school. That should be the foundation of their training no matter what field. This means you are not going to get great care even when you do go to the doctor. This is also what happens when pharmaceutical companies are your actual providers.

Not surprised to hear – about 20 years ago I stumbled across an article regarding MS rates being higher in Canada because of how much of the year we tend to spend in doors and covered up from sun exposure because of the cold, sun exposure is huge in vitamin D development because it is more of a hormone that is produced when we are in the sun / or more of a hormone production response the body has with sun exposure? 🤔 so this being indoors alot of the year and the l lack of vitamin D being publicly promoted many are vitamin D deficient BUT the really important thing is expectant mothers to be topped up in vitamin D because it is the vitamin D deficient mothers that than has kiddos that are more prone to MS. Theres my share 😁

    • Glenn Beadshaw on January 2, 2023 at 1:27 am

@V. H.L. yep over consumption of a certain protein in salmon can trigger an autoimmune disease

    • AFineLineA on January 2, 2023 at 3:57 am

@Betterwell Health Thank You for that information, much appreciated!

    • V. H.L. on January 2, 2023 at 4:09 pm

@Glenn Beadshaw I think “all in moderation” is probably the path to follow in life – with all things.

    • Alfred Zig on January 2, 2023 at 9:38 pm

@TruthOverLies I too heard that overly much vitamin D creates issues in joints.

    • Sarah on January 3, 2023 at 2:57 pm

@TruthOverLies omggg you can’t take that much vitamin D!!! Wow, you really could have damaged your self. Taking too high of doses of synthetic vitamins can hurt you as it did. Getting vitamin D from food sources is way better. Get your vitamin D though Cod Liver Oil. Ricotta cheese is highest in vitamin D. Also salmon is a good one. Good luck 💥

  5. Car on December 29, 2022 at 10:10 pm

I’ll try it. And watching you reminds me I need to cut out sugar. I’ve been looking at studies suggesting it can trigger and worsen it. I fell off the wagon with the holidays…. And now my gut is killing me. (Autoimmune gastritis which in my case comes with terrible IBS.)

Please can I ask in what form you are taking the Curcumin?
      I have ulcerative colitus.
My daughter suffers from autoimmune disease and fibromyalgia

    • Tasha Fortugaleza on January 2, 2023 at 1:05 am

@jeff yeah I also have Celiac Disease and think that you should get tested for it. You will want to get a referral to a gastroenterologist. Your bowel problems and itching are both things that are associated with Celiac Disease. You need both blood tests and an upper GI endoscopy. Some doctors will try to do just the blood tests, but Celiac can’t always be diagnosed that way—as was my case. Good luck!

    • Wyatt Family on January 3, 2023 at 9:32 am

@Doodles Just in tablet form. I take it each morning about 30 minute before breakfast. I’m in Australia and it’s availale at either health food stores or Pharmacists. No prescription is required. The brand I take is “Bioglan” fom anationwide chain called “Chemist Warehouse”. Hope that helps, it may assist you both.

Great video Dr Berg. Im curious your thoughts on K2 intake when one needs substantially higher amounts of D. Should K2 be increased beyond the recommended 120 mcg minimum? If so, to what levels? I know with the right foods one can easily get in 300-400 K2 in a day. But what would be considered a safe daily max?

    • Vera Pilecki on January 2, 2023 at 6:03 am

@Amethyst&Feathers certainly not what? If u have hypothyroidism.

    • Art Lover on January 2, 2023 at 3:45 pm

@Vera Pilecki Not good for people with thyroid issues. I am one. Broccoli I love but it does me no good whatsoeverr…and that is only one exampleof a veggy that harms

    • Vera Pilecki on January 2, 2023 at 5:10 pm

@Art Lover now I can’t see what my question was, as to your answer lol. I have hypothyroidism and am currently on Synthroid medication. I’m taking 2500 mg of magnesium. Is that ok?

    • Diana Boughner on January 2, 2023 at 10:33 pm

💖Thank you so much Dr. Berg. I so many painful health challenges and the regular doctors are just trained to push pharmaceutical drugs that can cause even further harm to my health. I know that holistic yteatments would help me so much but our medical will not provide enough coverage to make them financially available to lower income persons. I struggle to get through my days but I am always learning everything I can from holistic healthcare practitioners like yourself with online videos. I really appreciate the follow along transcript because I have extensive hearing loss too. Thank you again for being such a wonderful health professional who willingly mentors all of us seeking natural solutions to our health challenges 😀 💞

Some people who cannot tolerate wheat are ok with the ancient type called einkorn. It’s non-hybridized. Expensive, but worth it if you can switch to it. I learned how to make sourdough bread with this flour and I love it!

@Sushi Bowl That’s not that great of a product then. In two months she should have been up above 60…..and preferably 80. Biotech makes a good one. It’s what I suggest when people with serious conditions have asked. One gentleman had COPD and spent weeks in the hospital every winter. It was August so we had time to be proactive. He began D3, K2 and probiotics immediately along with raw honey with propolis. He never went to the hospital that winter. His wife also healed her hiatal hernia with the raw honey. These were conditions they were both told they had to live with.

Dr. Berg- I have to take methylated B12 due to conversion issues w/ cyanocobalamin (MTHFR). So when you mentioned ‘active’ Vitamin D, that really struck a chord. What IS that form of Vitamin D? (Sorry if I missed it…)

Also RA and such has wicked inflammation causes so much pain and debilitation. Omega six are inflammatory omega 3 are anti inflammatory…. Very important information, do you want to decrease omega 6 and increase omega 3, oils, nuts, meat and dairy are very inflammatory high in omega 6 grains too.

Thank you for this infomation. I have had RA since I was in my early 30’s and now I am 60. I have seen several rheumatlogists and they never talk about Vitamin D and the gut. I only found out when I saw a functional medicine doctor who prescribed 5,000 u of vit. D and Omega 3 and a probiotic among other vitamins to boost the immune system. I finally stopped taking predisone this year and I was on it for decades. I did find out through extensive blood work that I have lead in my body. I am going to take all of the things you talked about and I will watch the gut video also to help my health improve in 2023. I really enjoy your videos and how you break it down for us!!

    • LiftBrain Inc on January 2, 2023 at 3:03 pm

Will you talk more about St John’s Wort in relation to pain…… I have been diagnosed with two autoimmune diseases. My Vitamin D was at a level 14. I have since been using 50,000 daily (off and on, honestly) but am going to be regular with it after watching this video. And I’ve heard a great bit about taking St John’s Wort for various different reasons than those you mentioned. I would love to know more about this and the dosing you recommend in relation to dealing with chronic pain from these autoimmune diseases (specifically Fibromyalgia, Hashimotos, and full body inflammation diagnosis, too many to list)

    • Jae9Sunshine on January 3, 2023 at 12:46 am

Wow, they had you on prednisone for decades, even With the horrible side effects? When I was first diagnosed I was put on it temporarily to provide some relief while waiting for my main medication to get approved by my insurance. I know everyone’s body is different but I had horrible side effects from prednisone. Glad you found what works for you.

I agree 100%! I was diagnosed with an autoimmune condition last year. After listening to Dr. Berg I had an aha moment! Due to Covid I was working from home and rarely got out during the day. I wasn’t taking a vitamin D supplement and not getting natural sun. My rheumatologist kept pushing pills but I refused. I did my own research and learned a combination of Omega 3’s, vitamin D and Zinc could help with my condition. I also eliminated certain foods that worsened my condition. I started to feel better, less fatigued my rash, due to cutaneous lupus – cleared 100%. After my last blood work my numbers improved dramatically. My doctor was surprised given I was not taking the medication he was pushing! I had asked him before my findings if I should change my diet or be taking certain vitamins and he flat out said, “not really-you need to take medication to control your symptoms.” So sorry for my long post! Thank you Dr. Berg!!! I am so happy I found you!!!!!!!! 🥰🥰

    • Tere7 on January 3, 2023 at 2:37 pm

@AllGoodThingsTogether Ltd Kanaszyc I will try to avoid medications which causes side effects. I feel certain vitamins and avoiding certain foods have really made a difference in the way I feel. My blood work is also proof that something is working. ☺️

    • Ellie0225 on January 3, 2023 at 4:45 pm

Doctors’ training only include 3 to 5 HOURS of nutrition so they have NO IDEA how important it is to eat the right foods and how each food is effective in treating certain things. Like for example, garlic and (natural) grapefruit will lower your BP within minutes! Papaya is great for digestive issues and especially for heartburn. When I was pregnant and had so much heartburn I would have a papaya milkshake in the morning and it would settle my stomach for the rest of the day. The gell from the aloe vera plant can be cut into pill size pieces, frozen and swallowed for hearburn. It can also be incerted rectally for colon related issues and healing. The colon is extremely absorbent and can deliver medication to the rest of your body faster than if you swallow a pill. That doesn’t mean that you should incert an aspirin in your rectum because it may cause irritation to the surface of the colon and cause ulceration. Things like aloe are safe but if you don’t know what you’re doing don’t assume.

Excellenr! I wish , the rhematologist I saw, who tried to scare me into taking an immune suppressive drug had been properly trained to explore vit D as a real solution. Of course MD’s are basically trained to suppress or “treat” symptoms. Thanks so much for your information

    • Marilou Reiko on January 1, 2023 at 10:33 pm

They are trained only to diagnose and what drug to prescribe to their patients. They are not taught about nutrition in school. They are trained how to cut you.
