Let’s talk about the best remedies for cataracts and how to help prevent cataracts naturally. Cataracts are a problem with the lens of the eye—the lens becomes opaque and is difficult to see through.

Glycation is one of the top causes of cataracts. Glycation is a term to describe the combining of sugar with protein or sugar with fat. The more glycation occurs in a person’s lenses, the more eye problems they could experience.

Glycation could be why people with diabetes have a higher risk of cataracts and another reason why a low-sugar, low-carb diet is so important.

Top causes of cataracts:
• Glycation
• Aging
• Chronic use of steroids
• Chronic stress
• Alcohol
• Smoking
• Exposure to microwaves
• Junk foods
• Exposure to certain chemicals
• Oxidation
• High-sugar diets

The best natural remedies for cataracts:
1. Intermittent fasting
2. Cruciferous vegetables
3. Egg yolks
4. Selenium
5. Vitamin C
6. Vitamin E
7. Zinc
8. NAC
9. Thiamine (vitamin B1)
10. Riboflavin (vitamin B2)

Its ok if you didnt knew it. It is on a journal to make your vision better and understand the way out of “blurry eyes”.

    • Sabrina and husband on January 31, 2023 at 1:28 pm

@Emma don’t really have a blurry eyes, yet it’s good to know these info

I’ve heard that one of the reasons of cataracts is the “maillard” reaction, caused by excessive fructose consumption. Compared to glucose, fructose makes this seven times faster.

    • Frank Sam on January 31, 2023 at 11:48 am

Glucose gets spread to the liver & to the body. Fructose goes directly to the liver.

    • John Nada on January 31, 2023 at 12:05 pm

When I used to eat cheap crap chocolate with HFCS I noticed my BP would instantly skyrocket and my eyes would start to hurt. I’ve heard tissue glycation from fructose is 10x worse than from glucose.

    • Spam Mouse on January 31, 2023 at 12:38 pm

Indeed The Maillard Reaction (heat on protein that creates a sweet taste with BBQ for example) makes many foods taste wonderful, but sadly this is also what is called advanced glycation end-products aka AGEs which are really bad throughout the body, especially eyes.

    • Ian Stuart on January 31, 2023 at 4:12 pm

      Excellent info, thanks 😊

    • Ruth Sadri on February 1, 2023 at 12:20 am

      What is NAC?

  4. El Evans on January 31, 2023 at 11:46 am

Thank you so much for this. I have a question. Can I stop cataract or reverse it without surgery?

    • Spam Mouse on January 31, 2023 at 12:14 pm

Cure = Lens replacement surgery. Eating proteins with sugar produce advanced glycation end-products, AGE which is bad for eyes and everything else. I GUESS extended periods of fasting “might” improve things – but I doubt any variant of doctor would suggest this.

    • Scott Slotterbeck on February 1, 2023 at 7:16 am

There was a flurry of interest in a doctor at UC San Diego who found that a cholesterol variant called lanosterol reversed cataracts in dogs. But you have to inject it in the lens capsule, and no one does that. I think they stopped the research b/c cararact surgery is so profitable for opthalmologists.

My mom was 90% blind in her left eye due to cataracs. Last week, she had the surgery & she has to do another surgery for the same eye. They said her cateracts was so thick, they could not see through it at all.

    • Noname on February 1, 2023 at 6:30 pm

I think you need to care for your mom a bit more. No person should be neglected enough to let their cataracts get that bad nowadays.

  7. Jared Merlin on January 31, 2023 at 12:27 pm

I had cataract surgery in my late 40’s. Best thing to ever happen. My vision is crisper, clearer, and colors are extremely vibrant. Laser eye surgery helped a lot. Driving, I feel much safer now. And I can see signs again.

    • Jared Merlin on January 31, 2023 at 5:43 pm

@7×77 I needed laser after the procedure because my vision got foggy. It happens to some patients.

    • Jennifer WoundedKnee on January 31, 2023 at 7:50 pm

      What do they do?

    • Jared Merlin on January 31, 2023 at 8:48 pm

@Jennifer WoundedKnee That was it, less than 5 minutes. Zapped a few times, in a few days, my vision was clear again. I have a FU this coming April.

    • claudia on January 31, 2023 at 10:42 pm

@Jared Merlin I had progressive lens put in both eyes and yes I also needed laser afterwards done in office. Over a year now and staying 20/20. I’m very pleased.

    • Eric on January 31, 2023 at 11:28 pm

They have a stem cell treatment that rebuilds the lens for children.
They have had success multiple time in treating childhood cataracts, yes it happens to new borns.
As of 2 years ago they start the adult phase testing.
They already do stem cell treatment (not covered by insurance) for joints that have over use injuries. 85%-95% success rate depending on which joint they are treating.
Meet a mid 60’s Doctor who had it done, he said his knees feel like their 20 again. He had done years of climbing, running, and hiking through out his life.

I have a very small cataract, too small for eye surgery according to my eye dr. and I already take zinc, NAC, E, C, and Selenium every day. I eat LOTS of salad greens, broccoli, spinach & eggs and I eat very little sugar. So I’m hoping mine will stay at bay.

    • Kris Tina on January 31, 2023 at 9:45 pm

Similar for me. The doctor said to not do the surgery untill it interferes with my daily life because i wear glasses with cilinder and with glasses i see normal… do you wear glasses to help with cataract?

  12. Wallflower on January 31, 2023 at 5:35 pm

I was 18 when I had retinal detachment and I believe it was because I was binge drinking at a young age. I got surgery and was left with cataracts in my eye… i take vitamins and try my best to prevent my eyes from worsening. Thank you for this video

    • Mum2cuties on February 2, 2023 at 12:23 pm

It’s common to get cataract after retinal detachment surgery

  13. artmakersworlds on January 31, 2023 at 6:27 pm

Hey Doc, in my 40s or so I decided to get an eye exam. Starting to have problems with close up stuff, figured it was just age but I’d check it out. Well I had high pressure in the eye and the doctor put me in eyedrops (xalatan, later moved to a generic.) which so far has worked. (in my 60s now) BUT…. Since following you, and starting keto, I have already reversed type 2 diabetes. Lowered bp, lost weight. I have also noticed far fewer floaters in my eyes.
Wondering now if the pressure in my eyes is also reverseable????? Sounds like it might be. Any specific questions I should ask my eye doctor about? (Haven’t seen him in too long, overdue. I won’t do the mask nonsense. They are still enforcing this useless policy.)

    • Tracey Baldwin on January 31, 2023 at 7:09 pm

There’s an old health article showing daily 3-4 grams of vitamin c (divided dose) can help lower eye pressure.

I had cataracts at age 40 due to steroids in my asthma medication. One cataract was cover my lens and it was lasered. Unfortunately the lens they put in doesnt focus and everything is blurry. The other lens wasn’t big enough and stayed that way but is now getting worse. Thank you Dr. Berg for always educating me with your valued information.

Dr. Berg, thank you for your incredibly informative videos! It is quite clear that you do your due diligence in researching subjects related to the health of our bodies.
Have you come across studies and literature on the damaging effects of non-ionizing radiation? This is something that came up in my research a few years ago. Many studies show that wireless technology creates oxidative stress through the mechanism of calcium flooding via voltage gated calcium channels. This leads to blood sugar fluctuations and overall inflammation, among other effects.
Wearing blue light blocking lenses when around wireless radiation and viewing screens can help mitigate some of the damage from oxidative stress to the lens of the eye.

Great info Dr. Berg. I have been fermenting cabbage to sauerkraut and use it daily. Also making kefir. Love broccoli as well. We have some unique veggies here in the Philippines so still learning about them.

When I hit 40 it seemed my eyes started to give me issues. I was having trouble with night vision, driving at night mainly. I was previously on a few rounds of steriods for severe allergies also, so that maybe played a part. I started taking the Lutein/ X supplement and vitamin E and there has been a huge improvement!
