Tinnitus is ringing in the ears, and it can drive a person crazy. Today I want to cover some tips to get rid of tinnitus naturally.

Tinnitus is a little bit mysterious and hasn’t been fully figured out. Typical treatments for tinnitus are medications called Gabapentin and Klonopin.

These two medications both have a mechanism to increase GABA in the brain. GABA is an inhibitory neurotransmitter and slows down the central nervous system.

An interesting study shows that people with tinnitus may have lowered GABA and upregulated glutamate. Glutamate stimulates the brain.

The problem with GABA supplements is that they don’t cross the blood-brain barrier. This means they will have a difficult time penetrating into the brain to create any effect.

However, an amino acid called taurine turns into GABA and can pass the blood-brain barrier. Just be sure to take taurine on an empty stomach.

In addition to increasing GABA, it’s essential to inhibit glutamate. MSG and aspartame are high in glutamate, so it’s important to avoid foods containing these ingredients.

Other sources of glutamate to avoid:
• Hydrolyzed protein
• Calcium caseinate
• Yeast extract
• Textured protein
• Whey protein
• Soy protein isolates
• Soy sauce

I also want to point out that thyroid issues CAN cause tinnitus, so checking the thyroid may be a starting place, before asking for a prescription.

    • American Girl on July 16, 2023 at 4:22 pm

Can you be more specific, what type of thyroid issues?

    • Carol Cole on July 16, 2023 at 4:38 pm

@American Girl Since I have hypOThyroid disease, I definitely know it is this one, however it also may be hypERthyroid as well. Maybe you can research it online. Try googling “ can tinnitus be connected with thyroid issues “. I have it, however, we are connecting each health issue to my thyroid disease one by one to work on and have not quite made it to tinnitus yet. But, in testing, it DEFINITELY is connected !

When I used to take an amino acid supplement while lifting weights, my tinnitus would diminish, but I was not sure which one it was. Thank you doc.

    • StringGene on July 16, 2023 at 12:42 pm

When I was running 3 miles/day, and taking ginkgo biloba, mine would completely go away. It’s like circulation or oxygen is are components.

    • Brenda Courtien on July 16, 2023 at 6:59 pm

@StringGene I take ginkgo biloba and I still have tinnitus.

Tinnitus can be caused by a variety of factors, including exposure to loud noises, certain medications, earwax blockage, ear infections, and even age-related hearing loss.👍

    • Skoomo on July 16, 2023 at 10:18 am

Only have an ear infection for about 2 months gave me tinnitus

    • SNC Nutrition on July 16, 2023 at 11:02 am

Also damage from viruses can cause it. Cranial sacral therapy helps, Taking a hot shower then turning it to cold helps, fasting and low sodium helps as well as nfared sauna .

I’ve had tinnitus since 3 years old – after my mother smashed my head against a door poste. It has never ever gone away, and I’m 73 years old.

    • NOYBEESWAX on July 16, 2023 at 11:43 am

Sorry you had to experience that.❤

    • Dominoes Freak on July 16, 2023 at 11:46 am

Sorry to hear that but also hoping you have forgiven your mother for that as I quite positively think she didn’t wish this for you ,it was one spur of bad moment and unfortunately its repercussions nobody knew:(

    • Stellaria on July 16, 2023 at 11:52 am

@Dominoes FreakI wouldn’t forgive anyone for doing that

    • Stellaria on July 16, 2023 at 11:53 am

That is awful 😞 sorry you experienced that

Nice mom. I hope karma got her good.

I’m 55 and I use to experiencing tinnitus quite a bit before starting your healthy keto 16 months ago. I’m not sure if it was my bad habits of eating at the time and/or the different kinds of medications that I was prescribed at that time. I haven’t been getting the ringing in my ears anyway near like before. Thanks again Dr. Berg and your staff members for great information and products!!!!

    • Mary Jo Biebelhausen-See on July 16, 2023 at 1:34 pm

Mine has improved, but apparently it is a hereditary condition in my family, leading to hearing loss.

    • Dr. Eric Berg DC on July 16, 2023 at 2:50 pm

That’s amazing. Glad keto helped. Stay safe and healthy!

    • Misty G on July 16, 2023 at 2:59 pm

I am your age as well, and have lost 40 lb in less than a year, with Dr. Berg’s healthy keto & intermittent fasting. I’ve also had tinnitus for the past 3 or so years, and it’s gotten worse, but I’ve also had more neck, shoulder, jaw tension and now have continual headaches, since beginning a very physically strenuous job, and since they have recently installed 3 health debilitating “smart” meters on my house.🤯

    • Misty G on July 16, 2023 at 3:00 pm

@Mary Jo Biebelhausen-See No one in my family has tinnitus, but I’ve had it for 2-3 years.

Good info. Saw both tinnitus videos, tried recommendations, no change. Maybe helpful to different sufferers.

  8. JoJo Hamilton on July 16, 2023 at 11:49 am

I have apparently a ‘sticky’ ear, my left ear . I do suffer lightly from tinnitus, at night in bed when it is quiet as most of us do. I pinch my nose and and this pops my ears, this helps for a short period of time and finally I get to sleep.

A follow up on hyperacusis/noxacusis would be useful

My problem with ear ringing seems to be from exposure to wi-fi. In my condo building, everyone around me uses it. I do not use it. My laptop is direct connect to the router. My cell phone is kept behind a closed door where I can still hear it. My next door neighbor uses LED lights that he is able to adjust from the app on his phone. Even in the car I am getting it because the car has wi-fi. I currently have a youtube channel that I listen to which has the sound of waterfall and birds to drown it out and that works. It is 24/7 for me. I am going to try the Taurine (will go to get some today). 7/16/2023. Thank you Dr. Berg!

I agree that it can cause a person to go crazy. I had tinnitus and eczema at the same time. Between the itchy and ringing, I thought I was going to go crazy. That’s when my Dr suggested carnivore. The eczema is gone and the ringing is getting more and more infrequent, so it’s tolerable.

  12. Pip on July 16, 2023 at 12:29 pm

I hope that one day someone finds a remedy for tinnitus…

  13. David Johnson on July 16, 2023 at 1:13 pm

I had ear ringing once, putting in earphones helped but eliminating sugar solved the problem.

    • Dr. Eric Berg DC on July 16, 2023 at 3:23 pm

Good job getting off sugar. Keep up the good work!

I have tinnitus from having to take Bumex, a diuretic. It is maddening! My cardiologist recently switched me to Torsemide, which did help a lot, but did not completely rid me of the tinnitus. I’ll get some taurine and see how it helps. Thank you, Dr. Berg, for this information.

  15. beastywild on July 16, 2023 at 2:08 pm

You’d be surprised at how tinnitus can debilitate a person’s life, my mother suffers from it since she was 13 and she said it drove her into severe depression at times and she even almost backed out of marrying my dad because she was worried she’d eventually end up going literally crazy from it. Don’t underestimate the seriousness of it

  16. julia david on July 16, 2023 at 2:16 pm

I’ll do the research on the brand for taurine, and follow the instructions you said for taking it, on an empty stomach. Will you please give us the dosage amount and times per day, also, can it be taken long term? Thank you Dr Berg

Thank you for sharing the information needed to make us healthier. I’ve put it into practice and have dropped 15 lbs in the past two months (since May 9th, its July 16, 2023). Today I will be making a Keto Shepherd’s Pie, using turnips in place of potatoes. I’m making Mexican Agua Fresca with strawberries but using erythritol as a sweetener alternative. If I keep the carbs low enough throughout the day, I might even decide to fit in a plum. Or some watermelon. Thank you for helping me get control of my food addiction. In 2020, I did Keto using your channel and my doctor’s recommendation for me to do low carb and I dropped 70 lbs. I gained 30 back because I stopped maintaining with low carb and began eating carbs and whatever again. However, I couldn’t fit into a pair of shorts on a hot day so I weighed myself and started Keto again. Now, out of those 30 that I gained back, I’ve dropped 15 lbs of that. I’m starting from the weigh in date on May 9th for this Round 2. I am inadvertently doing Intermittent fasting as I am not hungry for long stretches of time. Yesterday, I did OMAD and had a plum and some strawberries with a healthy low carb meal. Today, I am having coffee at the moment. I’m actually hungry right now as I’ve been up all night due to being a night owl, plus I want to reset my sleeping so I am deliberately staying up today so that I can try to go back to sleep earlier. Ketosis actually makes it harder for me to sleep, which is my only issue with Keto. Since I’m hungry, I’ll do a 16:8 fast today. I try to do that instead of OMAD, but sometimes it just happens that way. I am excited because as long as I keep with this for the next three months, I will likely get down below 200 for the first time since 2004!

The first time I had tinnitus (in 2016) it was a side effect of Gabapentin that I was prescribed for migrainous vertigo but just over 18 months ago I was prescribed it for 3 months for seizures, associated anxiety and nerve pain: that time it worked for me with zero side effects because I’m used to tinnitus and hyperacusis but it probably did reduce it as my head felt a lot clearer while taking it but doctors stopped my prescription saying it wasn’t efficient enough to put me on pills with horrible side effects including much more seizure activity that feels just like seizures to me but doctors claim it isn’t seizures; for that I’ve started a complaint against my doctors and have taken it to government; if they don’t sort it quickly my solicitors will be opening a case against the NHS and government as a whole
