Let’s talk about the top foods to avoid if you have a hypothyroid condition.
Goitrogens are things that cause a goiter. A goiter is an enlarged thyroid gland. Goitrogenic foods interfere with certain enzymes and hormones and can lead to a goiter.
Foods to avoid for hypothyroidism:
1. Cassava
2. Lima beans
3. Sorgum
4. Sweet potato
5. Flax seed
6. Cruciferous vegetables
7. Millet
8. Soy products
9. Onions
10. Gluten
If you have cruciferous vegetables in very small amounts (less than five ounces), it shouldn’t be a problem.
Cooking, steaming, or fermenting cruciferous vegetables also reduces their goitrogenic effect. Having sea kelp as well may also help.
You would also want to avoid anything that depletes selenium, iodine, iron, and vitamin A.
Good sources of selenium and iodine:
• Seafood
• Sea kelp
• Sea salt
Good sources of iron:
• Red meat
• Animal products
Good sources of vitamin A:
• Egg yolks
• Butter
• Cod liver oil
• Beef liver

Thank you so much Dr Berg mate!!!! I’m so stoked. This is what I was requesting hoping you would do a video on. I’m a Melanoma and Thyroid Cancer survivor. Losing my whole Thyroid was the worst thing that has ever happened to me. It has totally changed my life. For the worst. We don’t realise how important your thyroid gland is, until it’s gone. I’m writing these tips down in my “Thyroid Book”. What’s that you say? 🧐 the TP is a little notebook that I write any good tips or anything I think I’d try, or things I’ve read. I like a hard copy over a computer file, I take it with me everywhere. I loaned it twice now that the 2 ladies copied. It’s just an idea I like to share, as someone else might try it. There is a lot hits of yours DR Berg, regarding all cancer type hints and tricks. Cheers from Australia 🇦🇺
What are.negative effects you experienced when your thyroid was removed
I had a coworker whose thyroid was removed so she had to take Synthroid. I told her about coconut oil and she started taking 1 spoonful every day. Her Synthroid dose had to be reduced, so coconut oil did something to help. In her case, anyway. Just sharing so you can learn more about it if you choose.
@Wenthank you very much for your reply. I do the Indian “Pulling” with coconut oil everyday for teeth health and they believe it also removes bad bacteria in the mouth. I do sometimes eat some too which I’ve heard was good for other health benefits. But I will now definitely try what your work mate does. Thanks again
@Just a Karen discovered the internet gday mate
Gday mate, well there has been quite a few problems since having a full thyroidectomy some are also from the radiation therapy etc. Weight gain was expected but not as much as I have. I was quite fit before, surfing, skating, hiking, helped coach sons AFL footy team, singing in a band for years etc. Im just about to turn 51 and still try to keep fit, but it’s really hard to lose the weight, I put on nearly 20kgs! But the exhaustion I feel everyday! Is really bad. I’ve had my Thyroxine (synthetic thyroid medication) increased, lowered, up and down like a yo-yo, but it didn’t help. I’ve really got to force myself to get out of bed to do stuff, I broke up with my partner at the time as she thought I was now lazy as before I was so active. I had to give up my job as a tattoo artist as my hands had become to shaky. My beard when I grew back was no where near as thick as it was, it’s dumb but I used to enter “beard competitions” and often win, I don’t know, my hair is super dry, brittle and falls out badly. It stuffed up my testosterone badly so I had to go on Testosterone replacement at 40, it wasn’t a age thing as that was all tested before. The radiation therapy caused some of the lubricantion glands in my eye lids to stop working, I was then also diagnosed with Glaucoma (not sure if it’s related, but it was 4 months after it started to cause problems) so there is quite a few. I’m not sure if men are affected in the same way as women? I know the percentage of the population who get it are women are more likely to have thyroid problems over men? Anyway thanks for the question. Cheers
I’ve been taking your sea kelp for about a year now and now my thyroid levels are more stable and in fact every time I go to the thyroid Dr they lessen the amount of synthroid needed to maintain good level. Remember as well every time loose weight , amount of meds needed have to change as well!
That’s correct!
I had mild symptoms of hypothyroidism for a while, like tiredness and weight gain, though I’ve never thought that they were serious enough to check with a doctor, so I decided to stick to healthy diet and take supplement instead to treat these probs. The only 2 things that improved how I feel greatly were: fatty fish; like salmon, and fresh ginger. I could understand why salmon would make me feel better (because of the zinc and the iodine obviously) but I couldn’t understand why fresh ginger is good too, until I found that it has iron, which as well can help convert T4 to T3. Thanks for your videos Dr Berg 🌸
Dr. Berg specifically said red meat should be the source for iron.
Same here
@I’m Happy oxalte foods look it up
Yes, do you know why? I’d lay money that it was the iodine in your new diet. I’d make sure that it’s verified as wild caught and not farm raised.
Developed hypo in 2012 due to stress and radical weight loss. Soy milk was the culprit eventhough I eat small amounts of all veggies. Thankfully it hasn’t flaired in the last 5 years but this was helpful and I can use it as an excuse not to eat sweet potato 😉
Soya is a Def no no with thyroid problems.
And I’m confused with that sweet potatoe
@J J N and what is soya is that soy I’m all confused and then he say soy but just have up there tofu and soy milk then he say all soy I don’t believe
@jjn7318 Yes, and most Doctors will not warn about that!
@DeionHarris It does include all soy products. Unfortunately they have high levels of phytoestrogens!

The negative long-term consequences of ketogenic diets may far outweigh any potential short-term benefits, according to a comprehensive new review published in Frontiers in Nutrition.
Keto diets have skyrocketed in popularity over the last decade due to their ability to promote quick weight loss. Typically very low in carbohydrates, modest in protein, and high in fats, the aim of keto diets is to push the body into ketosis—the state in which the body uses fat for fuel. Foods like red meat, fish, nuts, cream, eggs, cheese, oil, and non-starchy vegetables are given the green light while starchy vegetables, fruit, whole grains, beans, and lentils are avoided as much as possible.
For this latest meta-analysis, a group of physicians, researchers, and registered dietitians analyzed more than 100 peer-reviewed studies on keto diets to identify long-term effects. They found that people who follow such diets have a significantly increased risk of developing heart disease, LDL cholesterol buildup, kidney failure, Alzheimer’s disease, diabetes, and cancer. They also discovered that keto diets are particularly dangerous for people who are currently pregnant or may become pregnant. Low-carbohydrate diets are linked to birth defects, particularly neural tube defects, and gestational diabetes even if the pregnant person is taking folic acid supplements. Additionally, for those living with chronic kidney disease (CKD), the high amounts of protein consumed on the keto diet can place excess stress on the kidneys and worsen the long-term internal damage of CKD.
So why does this diet have such negative side effects? The study’s authors suggest that it has to do with the nutrient quality of the food being eaten.
“The foods that are emphasized on a keto diet are the very products that cause colon cancer, heart disease, and Alzheimer’s disease,” says study co-author Neal Barnard, MD, FACC, president of the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine and an adjunct professor of medicine at George Washington University School of Medicine. “New research also shows that these same foods raise the risk for severe COVID-19.”
This sentiment is echoed by lead review author Lee Crosby, RD. “The typical keto diet is a disease-promoting disaster,” says Crosby. “Loading up on red meat, processed meat, and saturated fat and restricting carbohydrate-rich vegetables, fruits, legumes, and whole grains is a recipe for bad health.”
Originally developed in the 1920s as a treatment for patients with severe drug-resistant epilepsy, the keto diet has been shown to be effective for reducing seizures in extreme cases. Scientists believe the diet decreases seizures by making less glucose available to fuel neurons. And although the study authors concluded that eating keto could be beneficial for seizure management, they say the risks far outweigh the rewards for most people.
Instead of going keto, Barnard suggests a whole food, plant-based diet: “On a low-calorie diet, people might lose weight, but they have to go hungry to do it. On a keto diet, they might lose weight but they feel guilty if they have an apple, banana, slice of bread, or a cookie. On a plant-based diet, you get the best of all worlds: weight loss, delicious food, better overall health, and you’re never hungry.”
I always thought goiter is the result of having not enough iodine in your diet. I come from a region where there used to be at least one person in each family with a goiter and almost everybody had thyroid problems. With the adding of iodine to salt the goiters became rare but I now realize cabbage, onions and gluten products were stable foods too.
Yes, iodine deficiency is a main factor in goiter.
You mean staple foods? They ate a lot of them?
You are correct.
15 years ago when I was on a diet of soy everything, and working out regularly I really liked the results. However, I started manifesting symptoms of thyroid disruption & had to give it up. My hair loss accelerated, and my nails were brittle to the point that it was almost analogous to radiation poisoning 😮.
I would add nitrogens for me I notice a drastic swelling & pain in my neck where my thyroid nodules are. Thank you Dr. Berg!💜💜
nitrogens?
Dr. Berg, what if you are hypothyroid due to ablation of thyroid, due to Graves … is it recommended to avoid same foods you describe on this video, or not? Thank you for your help!
Im eating 2 brazil nuts a day to help my thyroid along with a multivitamin. 👍🏻 Thank you Dr. Berg for all you do. Have a blessed day.
Glad you are feeling much better
God Bless You ❤️
@The Shepard’s Path to The Kingmaker thank you. 🙏🏼
Which multivitamin are you having?
@Priya Chadha I take a multivitamin that I bought at Whole Foods. Its their 365 brand multivitamin 👍🏻 I also take vitamin D3. However its important to make sure thyroids are at a proper level. Get levels checked at doctor.
Please tell the multivitamins that you’re consuming.
This Doctor needs to be cloned and put into EVERY medical school to re-educate doctors with correct information about HEALTH. The suggestion to have more kelp is based on the simple fact that thyroid hormone uses iodine rather than any real-life evidence.
Iodine is in fact very heavily present in the standard modern diet. If anything we need less of it.
Thank you 🫶🏼🫶🏼🫶🏼
Merci beaucoup !
@Seth Because of all the Iodized salt?
@Ian Stuart Yes, that is a huge factor. It’s also now very common to have seafood or fish relatively frequently even in inland areas.
Hello Dr. Berg, In most of your videos about diet and fasting, you recommend cruciferous vegetables and recommending 7 cups per day. but if I can only eat 5oz of cruciferous vegetables because of thyroid issues, what other vegetables can I eat to follow your recommended diet plan? Thank you.
Exactly! This video is discouraging.
Go more carnivore
Cruciferous vegetables are the only ones on that list that I eat as he recommends. Not quite 7 cups a day but a heaping salad. I’m going to continue eating my salad because I’m also taking sea kelp. I think I’ll be OK. I enjoy yourself and I’m not gonna cut that out.
@Terri Slater thank you, but how about a person who is dealing with thyroid issues but also need the benefits of Cruciferous vegetables?
You are the only doctor I trust and follow his health advice! Because of your tips and suggestions which I followed in many aspects my health changed into better for many health problems I used to have. Thank you Dr. Berg for the free valuable health advices that rescue our life! 🙏🏻big appreciation 🙏🏻🙏🏻.

Hi Dr Berg I’ve heard that the Thyroid grows back after removing it , is that true and how long does it take??? Thanks!
I currently have a hypo thyroid and your videos have been a life saver.
Dr. Berg could you make a video on female hormones (estradiol, progesteron, testosterone, prolactin, DHEA, FSH, LH, cortisol) in her 40’s and 50’s? Specifically what ranges, numbers, avg. and ratios should we be looking for. Everywhere I look I read about dominance or low level but no specifics.
