STOP Doing THIS for Low Back Pain

When Brendan Backstrom was faced with low back pain at an early age, he refused to accept that chronic pain would plague his daily life. In this interview, find out about Brendan’s program that has worked for so many people to effectively strengthen their lower back and eliminate lower back pain.

The typical prognosis for low back pain is that you can’t ever completely resolve it. If you have low back pain from injury, you just have to learn to cope with it and accept it.

After injuring his lower back at 21, Brendan did not want to accept that lower back pain was something he’d just have to deal with. The culture surrounding the lower back says that it needs to be protected, not built or rebuilt. Brendan quickly learned that no technique or lifestyle is safe enough to protect the lower back from injury or re-injury.

The standard approach is that the core protects the lower back. Conservative treatment for a spinal injury focuses on everything in the core except for the lower back. With this approach, many people become more sensitive, vulnerable, and disempowered after a lower back injury.

Brendan developed a program to help people slowly and safely develop a strong back. He stresses the importance of rebuilding slowly and viewing recovery as a dial rather than a light switch.

Brendan teaches people to get reacquainted with their lower back. “You can build your own back brace,” Brendan says. Brendan’s technique not only strengthens the muscles of the lower back but also increases circulation to the spine, stretches the fascia, and decreases friction around the nerves.

Brendan explains that sciatica can be tricky to resolve but not impossible. He focuses on slowly strengthening muscles along the sciatic nerve. One of the best features of Brendan’s program is that he attempts to avoid pain.

Three years ago, Brendan experienced chronic SI joint pain in his lower back that affected his everyday life. His problem became so severe that it affected his whole body. Brendan continues to do traditional lifts such as squats but never neglects the lower back.

Brendan’s program isn’t something you’ll complete quickly. His plan takes around 1 to 2 years and can help you remodel the deepest part of your body to overcome lower back pain. His program operates on a “pay what you can” model to make it affordable for everyone.

I would love to get Brendan’s take on the ‘Superman’ exercise for those who don’t have equipment at home. You lie face down on the ground with your arms extended in front of you, and then you lift your arms and legs off the ground simultaneously. It really targets your lower back, glutes, and shoulders. This exercise is a part of my workout program, and it has helped improve my posture and prevent injuries. It’s especially beneficial for those who sit at a desk all day.

That, crunches ,set ups, And that little wheel For the Superman workout.

    • @nekk-ra7080 on December 15, 2024 at 3:56 pm

I found a 10 minute exercise set here on YT that incorporates Superman and similar exercises that target the lower back. I try to do it at least once a week, hopefully twice, and it has helped a lot. If anyone reading this wants to try the workout, type in “Emi Wong Sexy Back”.

I’ve also added plank and plank-based exercises that strengthen the core. It all helps.

This makes a lot of sense! A back surgeon that left the field because he says surgery may not be the answer has a YouTube channel Goobie and Doobie. He says you can heal your back many times better than a back surgery can. His videos are mostly introspective but he has a few dedicated to the advice he would give his patients who would listen. He noticed they healed on their own. He quit his neurosurgery position after 10 yrs because he said many patients did not improve with surgery but the hospitals have incentive for more surgery.

    • @Deadbolthead on December 15, 2024 at 1:43 pm

Thanks for sharing that info. 👍🏼

    • @kzigmant on December 15, 2024 at 2:06 pm

The other issue with why patients backs may not heal after surgery, is that many patients don’t follow doctors orders. Many patients also assume that because they had the surgery that they’ll be fine and they go back to the lifestyle and everything they were doing prior to surgery, at least they try to anyways. Many patients tend to be lazy, wanting a quick fix, and are not willing to put in the work. Any injury or issue with the body that surrounds nerves and muscles take time to heal, but with the right follow up and exercises. Of course I’m not saying the supplies to everybody who doesn’t have a positive outcome from back surgery, but more of a general statement.

Regardless, back surgery doesn’t work out for a lot of people in general because it can be hit or miss.

    • @TurtleMother1 on December 15, 2024 at 2:30 pm

Also, Dr. Sarno was very helpful for me to read – he’s got several books addressing back pain that were powerful and very helpful

    • @Southernbelle4 on December 15, 2024 at 2:42 pm

@kzigmant I agree. Unfortunately, I had a surgery c3-c7 at age 30. Due to past injuries. I was a cheerleader, gymnast, and skydiver. They believe it compiled over time, and one wrong movement caused the rupture. I now have lower back pain. But not because I’m lazy, nor because I didn’t change lifestyle, nor because I didn’t follow doctors orders. When you parts of the spine with no give, no movement it tends to put pressure on the remaining joints of the spine. There are people out there who do everything right and this still happens to.

Same. I have been dealing with a second reoccurrence for 2 years now – after another 2 year stint in my 20s – and I’m currently suicidal and have lost my job and everything bc of my back pain.

  17. @lowbackability on December 15, 2024 at 7:49 pm

Thank you so much Dr. Berg for letting me share my story & hopefully save the former me’s out there watching. You are giving a voice to the voiceless. There are millions of young people in the world silently suffering without much long-term direction other than avoidance & further dissociation with their low back. 5 years ago, I thought I was the only one. This video would’ve broken me down to tears to find back then. My early 20’s became an isolated & desperate search for any real clues to get my life back. So to have this conversation with you is a full circle moment that is hard to believe.

I believe we can slow the growing statistics of chronic back problems in the years to come, with the help of authentic leaders like yourself. I may not have ALL the answers to this back epidemic, but I believe we leading people to start asking the right questions…which is where all meaningful progress begins. It’s my hope that this video will inspire someone to break the loop of fear and commit to a long game of slow but steady low-back rebuilding. It’s not easy but it IS possible.

I’m rooting for everyone here on their healing journey. Please keep going.

    Brendan

    • @TrevorHamberger on December 15, 2024 at 9:15 pm

The only thing that can slow the problem of back pain in America is people taking responsibility for their own dietary choices.

    • @mohamedmoustakim2243 on December 15, 2024 at 9:40 pm

@@cathwalsh9921You’d be surprised to learn that inflammation of the muscle a lot of times comes from eating junk food not just doing exercise intensively or in a wrong position, that’s a fact that Dr berg himself talk about in his videos.

    • @TrevorHamberger on December 15, 2024 at 9:43 pm

@cathwalsh9921  you can’t possibly be serious? The only way you develop a back problem in the first place is by having a diet poor enough to not be able to regrow repair and maintain cartilage joints ligaments and tendons.

If you’re eating a diet tell us fast food in it you’re going to have back problems. It doesn’t matter what you do or how active you are you’re still going to have back problems. Do you know anything at all about nutrition?

  18. @jaz5584 on December 15, 2024 at 8:14 pm

I was diagnosed with multiple herniated discs in my mid-twenties. The orthopedic docs recommended surgery, which I didn’t want to do since my aunt had it and she still had pain. My brother was in Chiropractic school and urged me to seek Chiropractic treatments. I started the treatments which helped, but I didn’t want to be dependent on adjustments my whole life. One of my Chiropractors told me the I had to strengthen my back muscles to avoid having recurring back pain.
I started doing low impact aerobics and after months transitioned to cardio kickboxing (only air with no impact). I also did weight training with small dumbbells for upper body and no more than 50lbs for my lower body.
In my mid-30s, I was the queen of aerobics and my back problems were only occasional flare ups (only if I did multiple aerobic sessions back-to-back).
I have been advocating non- surgical healing of the body because it truly works!!!
