Normal Vitamin D Levels Will NOT Tell the Whole Picture

Vitamin D is important but confusing. Find out how to boost vitamin D and much more.

Today I want to cover what you really need to know about vitamin D.

The RDA for vitamin D is 600 IU for adults under 70 years old. But, the studies that support this amount are outdated.

Vitamin D reaches the cells through vitamin D receptors. Unfortunately, you can’t use blood tests to determine what’s happening in the cells, and various problems can occur with these receptors.

For example, about 30% of the population has a genetic problem with the vitamin D receptor, meaning they have a difficult time getting the vitamin D they need.

Many health conditions are directly related to a problem with the vitamin D receptor, including:
• Autoimmune diseases
• Breast cancer and colon cancer
• Certain cardiovascular diseases
• Certain cognitive diseases
• Diabetes (type 1 and type 2)
• Metabolic syndrome
• High blood pressure
• Tuberculosis and certain infections
• Lyme disease
• Hair loss
• Crohn’s disease
• Respiratory infections
• Asthma and food allergies
• Low back pain
• Vitiligo
• Osteoporosis
• COPD
• PTSD

How to increase vitamin D:
1. Take more vitamin D
2. Take your vitamin D supplements inconsistently
3. Take magnesium
4. Take zinc
5. Take bile salts
6. Consume omega-3 fatty acids
7. Consume vitamin K2
8. Take resveratrol, curcumin, quercetin, and sulforaphane
9. Consume butyrate (vegetables)

What about PMR? I’ve been on Prednisone over 6 years. Started on 20 mg now 2/3 mg. I’ve changed my diet , garden, outside all summer and when I can in the winter. Just started vitamins d-k2 and red algae, and a few others. Other than that I’m very healthy.

I’ve been taking Vinia and VitD3 for a couple months. Vinia has resveratrol and I really think I have been feeling more energy.

  3. K16 on January 5, 2023 at 1:57 pm

    I do well at targeting 50 to 80 ng/ml (25 OH D). I usually take 2000 to 4000 IU of D3 to maintain levels.

    • Karine on January 5, 2023 at 5:22 pm

Mine is 58 nmol/L result test in Canada so I assume it is low ? It is not ng like your but nmol

I love Dr Berg! I’m doing keto and IF, I’ve been doing it for about a month. I’m STILL so hungry in the morning, it’s like half my day is just miserable. Added salt to water, tried MCT in coffee, increased fat day before, nothing has worked. 😢

    • BackPack_Jones on January 5, 2023 at 3:43 pm

Maybe try keto or IF instead of doing both. Then introduce the other one later.

    • Jovial Juju on January 5, 2023 at 4:55 pm

I find that taking 2tbsp.MCT oil instead of putting in my coffee keeps me feeling full

    • Melissa Mcferren on January 5, 2023 at 4:57 pm

@Jovial Juju I’ll try this! Thanks!

I have the same issue. Fasting at work isn’t a problem for me because I’m so busy. It’s my days off that I struggle. So I try to keep myself busy with tasks otherwise I’ll mindlessly eat.

    • Steffen kawa on January 5, 2023 at 7:14 pm

It sounds like you don’t eat enough fats the day before. They take longer to digest and will help you against hunger in the morning.

  5. kevin starski on January 5, 2023 at 3:40 pm

Would you recommend taking bile salts regularly for seemingly healthy individuals (not obese, good blood pressure, no digestive issues…)? Haven’t been able to find the answer after watching your and others’ videos….

Dr. Berg, how do you feel about the Vitamin D added to organic whole milk? It is expensive, but since hubs and I are mildly lactose we give it to our kids and use it in baking. Does it make a significant enough difference (especially in children) to keep using? We also use liquid Vitamin D drops (better absorption?) With Barleans key lime liquid fish oil sporatically in the evenings for our whole family. These are just bits of info I pieced together, we live in MN hardly any sun for weeks now!

    • S RC on January 5, 2023 at 4:57 pm

I believe the vit d added to products is d2. Not the type needed

    • Lillian on January 5, 2023 at 5:44 pm

      There is always sun.

  7. J Peoples on January 5, 2023 at 4:34 pm

Been struggling with candida for years. I tried everything possible. Supplementing D3 k2 magnesium along with caprylic acid knocked it out in 3 weeks.

    • jiha shahid on January 5, 2023 at 4:39 pm

How much d3 n k2 you took…???would coconut oil good for caprylic acid??

    • J Peoples on January 5, 2023 at 7:39 pm

@jiha shahid I started with 20,000 iu for the first week and saw immediate results, I took it down to 10,000 after that. I felt like it might have been too much. I was taking a shot olive oil with the vitamin D3 pills as good fat to help it bind.

    • J Peoples on January 5, 2023 at 7:41 pm

@jiha shahid I’m not sure if basic coconut oil has the right amount of caprylic or not. I took an oil with a high level of caprylic acid. Good question though. Not sure if it was any different.

    • J Peoples on January 5, 2023 at 7:43 pm

@jiha shahid it eliminated my symptoms I should say. I been taking 10,000 iu ever since.

  8. Reddy Shekar on January 5, 2023 at 4:38 pm

Thanks Dr. Berg. Could you please give what are the tests to do to find out Vitamin D Receptor issues and any gene issues? Please kindly share

    • Dr. Eric Berg DC on January 5, 2023 at 6:50 pm

      Will do!

  9. Amber W on January 5, 2023 at 4:51 pm

I have been learning so much from Dr Berg. I never knew how important vitamin D is and I have been seeing remarkable difference in immunity since we started taking D3 with K

  10. Kriss Kross on January 5, 2023 at 5:01 pm

High fructose corn syrup is one of those vitamin D receptor blockers (Medcram video on vitamin D). You could have normal or even high levels of vitamin D but because of HFC in majority of processed foods the vitamin D isn’t doing what it supposed to do which is boost our immune response to all the bugs out there.

  11. Elizabeth Lynemary Dzimati on January 5, 2023 at 5:02 pm

Through you, l’m becoming my own doctor…… thank you Dr Berg

    • C Powers on January 5, 2023 at 5:33 pm

We should always be our own doctor and I 3 no 1 cares more about your life and your health then you do no one

  12. Ms. K on January 5, 2023 at 5:19 pm

Wow, everything single thing you have said is true. I take all the vitamins listed and I DO notice a huge difference.
I also tried a week of different foods and something in Avocados gave me joint relief as well, I don’t understand the how or why.
Got the keto book, more raw, and sun when I can, raining now, but usually ‘cloudy’ til 2pm.
    Great video confirmation!❤️

  13. Mao Wong on January 5, 2023 at 5:41 pm

Thanks Dr Berg. I have a question on my mind all the time and that is if I take high doses of vit D regularly, is there any chance of having vit D resistance like insulin resistance so if some major virus bogs me down, I will need to take much higher doses??

    • Aksamsons on January 5, 2023 at 7:10 pm

How can you when you cant make vit D unless your in the sun daily. Its a hormone whech stores in the body. If you don’t make it you don’t store it or can become immune to it alledegly…

  14. CapeCyn on January 5, 2023 at 5:47 pm

Thank you as always Dr Berg this may be part of the puzzle that I’m trying to figure out. Even though I take vitamin D3 with K2, zinc and a number of other things, if my receptors are not capable of doing their job, I need to find out if I have that genetic issue. I’m also going to get tested for the MTHFR gene as a number of conditions of that defect match a number of symptoms I have along with siblings and mother.

  15. Pınar Ofdağ on January 5, 2023 at 6:09 pm

The most confusing topic around people with no MD background.. Thank you Dr. Berg.. And Happy New Year to you and your family..

  16. Kat on January 5, 2023 at 6:19 pm

Can you please cover the genetic tests you often talk about. Where to do them and which ones are the most useful. Thanks!

      Sure thing!

  17. CRod8545 on January 5, 2023 at 6:21 pm

Thank you DB for the recent Vit D uploads…I personally am recovering from Vitimin D deficiency…my health turned off like a light switch over 3 months

  18. Marada Munoz-Young on January 5, 2023 at 6:40 pm

I haven’t found anyone else that goes into this much depth to help. Not even my own doctors. I’ve had specialists, nutritionalists, many consultation after consultation. Many tests, poked and proded, many different medications and supplements and so on. My heath problems, which I’ve had my whole life, I’ve come to suspect is because of genetic deficiency of vitamin d and reception. I’ve watched dr berg for years and I’m so grateful to be given the information to start to finally be healthy and feel better. Thanks Dr. Berg

  19. Cote Vallejos on January 5, 2023 at 6:49 pm

Recently I got my vitamins tested through blood samples and I got 11.3 for vitamin D. The doctor thought that I was a vampire 🤣 I’m taking supplements now and taking a little bit of sun everyday!

  20. Christie Fit on January 5, 2023 at 6:59 pm

Another great video! When you touched on all that can happen with vitamin D I was like that is many within the same as insulin resistance/syndrome x. Great information, I’d love to see a video touching on more detail with vitamin D and insulin resistance/syndrome x. 😊
