Your skin is the largest organ in your body. On top of the skin, especially the face, is the acid mantle. This acidic, protective barrier houses millions of microbes that protect you.
Putting the wrong products on your skin can negatively affect this environment, leading to redness, rashes, acne, dry skin, and other skin problems.
Avoid the following 11 products that ruin your skin!
1. Apple cider vinegar
ACV is too acidic for the skin. It can cause irritation and redness. If you want to use it on your skin, dilute one teaspoon into 8 ounces of water.
2. Lemon juice
Don’t put lemon juice on your face or hair! It contains a phytochemical that can cause problems when you’re exposed to sunlight.
3. Essential oils
Some essential oils, such as cedarwood and tea tree oil, are simply too strong for the skin.
4. Bergamot
Combining bergamot with sun exposure can cause skin inflammation.
5. Baking soda
With a pH of 9, baking soda is too alkaline for the skin. It can damage the acidic environment, compromising the beneficial microbes on the skin.
6. Toothpaste
Harsh ingredients like peroxide and fluoride should not be used on your skin.
7. Rubbing alcohol
Alcohol kills the microbes on the surface of your skin. This can allow the overgrowth of unfriendly bacteria. Many creams and lotions contain alcohol, so be sure to check the ingredients of your skin care products.
8. Hydrogen peroxide
This is effective for removing stains on the teeth and for cleaning, but it's not suitable for use on the face.
9. Hair dye
Hair dye used for your eyebrows and eyelashes can be very dangerous to your eyes.
10. Topical steroids
Redness, irritation, and flakiness are often treated with topical steroids without second thought. Topical steroids stop the growth of skin cells and the production of collagen.
11. Exfoliating scrubs
Frequent use of exfoliating scrubs can scrub off the microbiome of your face.
It’s beneficial to get a filter for your shower head to reduce skin exposure to chlorine and fluoride. Opt for makeup that is free of chemicals and fragrance!

Castor oil everyday.
Salt and castor oil
Castor oil mix with tea tree oil organic
Eyelashes
Castor oil with coconut oil
I’ve used baking soda for years to slough dry skin followed by castor oil and I’ve got terrific skin! I get compliments all the time how young I look and i’m 52. Nothing else gets off the dry, flaky skin as well.
Essential oils are strong and should be used with a carrier oil when used on the skin. A carrier oil dilutes it.
So carrier oil is just another fancy name for oil to dilute it with right
@kevinstarski1598
Yes, but make sure you get the right balance for yourself.
@kevinstarski1598 .. it is a type of oil that are light basically, and easy to mix with other thicker oils (castor for example). Some great ones: jojoba, sweet almond and avocado.
@kevinstarski1598 The nature and molecular structure of carrier oils and essential oils are different. Essential oils are a bit stronger and mostly used when combined with carrier oils. But you should always do your research before putting shii on your face and skin in general.
@kevinstarski1598
Carrier is NOT fancy!
Im really big fan of u Dr !I feel blessed that I found your videos at such young age(18)
I use cold pressed organic castor oil on my face daily. Works wonders. I’m an all natural girl and I’ve never worn makeup. My mom is almost 80 and she doesn’t have any wrinkles. Good genetics + a healthy lifestyle definitely helps
Well done, I’ll try it😊
Castor oil is nature’s Botox 🥰
Hello, where do you purchase your castor oil, what brand? How do you apply it? Please share and thank you very much.
One tip: if you have a sensitive skin, it becomes pore-clogging 🙁 I’ve tried and wow my t-zone hates it. So for me Jojoba, Avocado, Rosehip works better but I apply castor oil around the eyes for my early stage wrinkles care.
I use castor oil with few drops of geranium. I switch with coconut oil and geranium.
With information just pouring in on the Internet, often from unqualified people, this video by Dr. Berg is very helpful!
So glad it helps!
Thank you Dr Berg for putting the list in the drop down description box. I also love when you use the whiteboard ❤
I had a lump for years on my jawline which started bleeding one day. It wouldn’t stop so I grabbed Apple Cider Vinegar and pressed a tissue against it for an hour. It finally stopped bleeding and scabbed over but I continued applying a tissue soaked with Apple Cider Vinegar for a couple of weeks. *The lump I had for years completely went away.* No irritation, no damage to my skin. 👈
Edit: I think it was Basal Cell Carcinoma.
This is interesting – I’ve learned a lot. I use an organic black nigella seed oil on face in the winter, otherwise I don’t use any of the culprits you list but until now, I had no idea the risks they pose. Thank you for sharing this information
That’s great. Colloidal silver ointment will do the same, but it’s very difficult to find the real stuff online, anymore.
I dont think using ACV for short term for what you used it for is unsafe. I think it was smart in fact. Just dont use long term.
It’s not cancer or just regular pimples?
@endgamefond
It is the most common type of skin cancer. It’s one of the least threatening cancers.
Anytime you see “Carcino” in a word like Carcinoma, Carcinoma or Carcinogen it comes from the Greek word karkinoma meaning cancer/sore.
ACV to spot treat pimples, works well
I’m 72 no wrinkles. Blessed. I never wash my face with soap. I grew fasting but didn’t realize it at that time. Maybe a meal and half a day. I think that helped. Even as a kid I hardly ever washed my face. I only use a damp warm wet wash cloth and the dirt comes off. Other than possibly good genes ( thank you ancestors ) I have luckily avoided wrinkles. A few spots on my forehead from sun damage and little sagging of the upper eye lids. No doubt very lucky. Definitely get compliments about how much younger I look. Cheat too much with carbs but mostly carnivore and intermittent fasting. I’d rather be lucky than good cause I sure ain’t good. Lol
Me too..fasting and no soap on face. Look 20 years younger most of the time..under stress I look older.
Agree. I only wash my face with water, or cerave foam soap. I sometimes intermittent fasting and other time water fast
I just use Olive oil on my WET…NOT DRY…skin. I find that my skin stays moisturized for a long time 😉 Once in a while, I clean my face with Witch Hazel.
Oh! I’ve also, started using SOFT, filtered water.
As teens we used to put 🍋 lemon j on our hair ..to make it go lighter 😅😅 dried hair out good. Imagine the skin.
I used on my skin 😂
@maha33612lol me too and hair
We use coconut oil for dry skin. Also using rice soap with shea butter shampoo. After using the shampoo I noticed the run off was making my skin so soft and moisturized. Now we use it as body soap.
DOC, CAN YOU PLEASE DO A VIDEO ON WHAT IS GOOD TO PUT ON THE SKIN, for different types of problematic skin such as: acne, older (50 year old skin), etc
You re absolutely wrong about acne. It s hormone related & seems to be often hereditary, at least from one side of the family. Swimming in polluted waters is one direct & immediate cause. So is oily skins & sun exposure. Tanning cells are sealers too.. so good luck with that! Good food never hurts though.
Acne comes from within, change your diet, sugar, refined seed oils, processed meat…
@TheSamuiman True. However, many acne conditions can t be controlled by the best of foods alone , & yet this condition regresses at 40 on its own! Also, there are different levels & severity to it. Can someone explain that ?
Shea butter
Argan oil, cocoa butter…
I put tiger balm on my face once. NEVER DO THAT
Thanks for the clear breakdown, Dr. Berg!
The 11 common mistakes:
1.Using undiluted apple cider vinegar
2.Applying lemon or lime juice on the face
3.Using strong essential oils directly on the skin
4.Putting bergamot oil on the face and going into the sun
5.Using baking soda (too alkaline)
6.Applying toothpaste on the skin
7.Using rubbing alcohol on the face
8.Putting hydrogen peroxide on facial skin
9.Using hair dye on eyebrows or lashes
10.Overusing topical steroids on the face
11.Scrubbing/exfoliating daily and damaging the skin microbiome.
You could just look at the description, it’s all there. With a summary of the reason, not just the substance name.
Thank you!
Topical steroids, Botox? I definitely feel like if anything that should start at 40 like why a 20 yr old needs Botox on face 🤦♀️ I feel you get the opposite of what you want to achieve and we can see it with celebrities when they get caught with no make up/filters those famous paparazzi pictures
@yt20241so glad I’m not a celebrity 😅 however, wearing a brimmed hat is good for no harsh lighting 😊
Thank you 🙏
I used to spend hundreds on fancy creams until my aunt (she’s 78!) told me her entire ‘anti-aging routine’ was just castor oil and coconut oil alternating every other night.
I didn’t believe her… until I saw her skin up close last month. No wrinkles, no dryness, nothing.
I switched to natural oils out of curiosity — and honestly, my skin has improved more in 3 months than in 3 years of skincare products.
Makes me wonder… how much of the beauty industry is just overpriced moisturizers in pretty bottles?
Beauty creams etc are one of the most lucrative products on the market!! Your aunty is right to use natural products!!
@BarbaraCarus That’s right!
You so lucky,, Castor and Coconut oil opened my pores,, yes it depends on people skin,, Amarula and Bio oil work wonders on my skin then I mix it with Aloe Vera gell🦋
@Dudiesdude That sounds wonderful! It’s great that you’ve found a combination of oils and aloe vera gel that works so well for your skin. Everyone’s skin reacts differently, so hearing what truly benefits you is really helpful. Thank you for sharing your experience!
@Dudiesdudetry Shea butter also
I used to make at least 5 out of the 11 mistakes in the video… no wonder my skin never improved. Thanks for such a helpful video!
I used to do the rubbing alcohol wipe down. It was the only thing I could figure out to kill the acne. That was before the internet and waaaaaay before Dr Berg.
You are so right! I’m in my 70s and was hospitalized a few years ago for months and I did not have the few things I use on my face with me since I was whisked off to the hospital by ambulance. The hospital was in a city too far away from anyone who could visit or bring something to me.
I was also bedridden on my back for a long time, so no bathroom trips or regular washing routine. In 2 months I actually only was able to do some wipe downs and only had 1 bath (lowered into the tub by seat) and 1 shower!
I normally have a good oily skin with no wrinkles except those grooves on the side of my mouth under my cheekbones. My complexion improved even more, although I am lucky already with my skin’s appearance. Without doing anything, my skin appeared even younger than when I went in because I left my skin to look after itself and of course, more rest and sleep helped a bit too… but sleep routine went back to normal once I got home and my skin is still good by doing the bare minimum. I do a mild soap wash, pat dry that exfoliates just a bit, and then a good moisturizer. I only use makeup on my face about once every week when I go out to do shopping, but don’t even need that as use only light eye makeup when at home. Most people seem to do more damage than if they left our body alone.
I am 62. I never use water and soap in face since i was 13. I use toner. Without alcohol. No wrinkles!
Which toner ma?
