Losing weight should help you live longer, but it’s not always that simple. As you age, it’s vital to maintain a healthy amount of lean muscle mass. Ozempic is very popular for weight loss, but trials have shown that it can cause muscle loss, not just fat loss. One study compared the use of Ozempic to a decade or more of aging.
Preserving muscle mass is one of the best things you can do for longevity. Your muscles help regulate your blood sugar and support your metabolism.
Sarcopenia is the term for age-related muscle loss. When you develop sarcopenia, your risk for diabetes, immune problems, and your mortality rate increases.
Exercise is the best thing you can do for your muscles. Protein is the raw material for muscle-building, so it’s essential to ensure you’re getting enough and spreading your intake throughout the day. Grass-fed red meat is the best source of protein.
Poor sleep drains muscle mass more than poor diet because muscle recovery occurs when you’re sleeping.
In summary, focus on the following as you age:
•Increase lean muscle mass
•Ensure adequate protein intake
•Consume collagen
•Increase magnesium glycinate, vitamin D, zinc, selenium, copper, B vitamins, and coenzyme Q10
•Consume iron from red meat
L. reuteri is a microbe with many fascinating benefits and has been shown to increase muscle stem cells. It's helped me gain 5 pounds of muscle mass!

Thanks for watching! I hope you enjoy these anti-aging tips. I’ll see you in the next video.
Doc, your show is taking over all of YouTube!
Friendly occupation and colonisation without apartheid😺👍
Dr Berg, I realize I’m so dedicated to your videos, I watch them whether I need them or not!😃
Lift weights to rev up metabolism, eat enough protein to keep muscle mass, and sleep well to recover from exercise. Daily walks 5000-10000 steps for fresh air and free vitamin d:) . Good luck to all!
Great Advise..and drop kick the garbage foods (sugars/high carbs/processed foods/seed oil) to the curb.. They are destroying your health.
Public schools don’t teach what is needed to stay healthy throughout the life span
Living your life around exercise seems, well, unbalanced.
It should be a facet of your life; not the focus
@@toolegittoquit_001sure, do it onec and a while, don’t take it seriously and live an unhealthy life full of burdens you would not have had it you exercised, your choice.
@toolegittoquit_001 You Can’t find 1hr/day to exercise, yet you probably spend 5 hours of tv & social media
Can’t thank you enough and enough times here for all your teachings and inspiration and encouragement. Will resume my weight lifting today.
Summary Dr. Eric Berg DC shares how to build muscle in this video:

– Nutrition: Eat enough high-quality protein (red meat, collagen), supplement micronutrients such as magnesium, vitamin D, zinc.
– Sleep: Get enough sleep to restore muscles.
– L. Reuteri bacteria: Supports muscle growth and reduces stress.
– Avoid: Sedentary lifestyle and unhealthy diet.
Thanks for the brief
I haven’t eaten red meat for 20 years. As I approached 50 I started to work out, and had a significant muscle increase. I do eat chicken nearly every day, and started hemp seed protein about 6 months ago, which I believe has helped. I’m sure if I ate red meat I would see “more” muscle increase (I don’t need more), but it is certainly not required. I’m not vegan, but I suggest people google “vegan body builders” and understand that it works for many people; perhaps not everyone.
But how much of each? There’s different strengths. Thank u
@@Tara-Mayais the hemp seed protein gritty? I haven’t found a nice smooth protein drink.
Checks all boxes except for sleep. Only getting 5 to 6. Still working on it.
I am grateful that you did this video! I have been teaching this for the past 6 years. Some people just don’t understand because they focus on (let’s call them) old teachings. We can live so much longer and healthier if we just unlearned the old teachings and learned new. Shine on Doc!!!!
I m 57
I look younger but sometimes I feel older..
Thank you so much !❤
Don’t feel bad I think we all have great and not so great days after 50
Hey congratulations. I just turned 57. Many people I meet guess my age in the mid to late 40’s but on some days I feel old too. But I feel pretty good and high energy most days.
My favorite YouTuber and doctor!
Y’all this video is one of the best videos of Dr Berg’s for OLDER PEOPLE. My husband and I are early 60’s and just 10 days ago, started eating this yogurt and it has SERIOUSLY changed our lives. Im sleeping so well now, that I’m almost completed restored. I’m an avid cardio exerciser and we eat grass fed beef 2X’s a day, fast, HUGE fresh veggie eaters but without the yogurt, we we’re only spinning our wheels. PLEASE PLEASE watch Dr Berg’s video on how to make this “yogurt” I feel like I’ve turned back the clock on aging!!!
I’m just waiting on my thermometer then I am going to make it, can’t wait!
Kelly, do you have the link to the video about the yogurt?
@@trading2prosper430 Just YouTube it. I’m sure you will find it
Changed your lives in 10 days? I don’t think so 🙄
Thank you for sharing your good experience. I had tried Organic Greek yogurt with Lactobacillus Casei, and L.bulgaricus….but it made bloating worse. Possibly a Histamine issue… I will order the L. reuteri early next week. Thank you very much again.
I just retired from my multi decade desk job 4 months ago. One of my retirement goals is to get back into shape. I cannot tell you how much I’ve improved physically in such a short amount of time. I can actually sleep all night without drugs now! Let’s be honest – a desk job will kill you faster than anything if you allow it to. Healthy diet and exercise Baby! 💯 💪
@@johnbruenn8755 very happy for your improvements !
Congrats to you! My husband just did this, he began using our Tonal religiously, finally got sufficient sleep and takes our pups on daily walks with me. He has truly aged backwards & got off blood pressure meds in just one year. He looks incredible at 52. I can’t recommend Tonal or any regular strength training and an animal based diet with organic fruits & vegetables enough. Good luck to you.
@ that is awesome!! Good for him! 👍
I am doing push-ups, age 56, started at barely doing 15, now a month or so later I can do 20 push-ups in one try.
Intermittent fasting also helps
So glad you are bringing up SARCOPENIA and its devastating effect on the body. This video is a MUST SAVE. It represents keystone knowledge. Thank you again.
My work is outdoors and physical. I started doing a 3 k hike with my dogs through the woods 3-4 times a week. Big difference in energy and all round wellness. I’m more limber, aches and pains have disappeared, feel stronger and at 63 I have lost the pot belly. Started eating near keto, not quite keto yet, and my weight dropped 10 lbs. I wasn’t trying to lose weight. Love Dr. Berg.
Be careful with Keto. You can lose muscle as well as fat. So hard to regain muscle at our ages. Happened to me.
A little potato, grow your own organically if possible. Well done bro.
Your lifestyle is what kept previous generations healthy. Outdoors physical work……not sitting in an office getting carpal tunnel and a pot belly…..well done
I’ve been eating the L. reuteri yogurt for about 3 weeks now and I feel a difference already.
Did you make it? Or buy it? If you bought it what brand? Thank you
@ I made it. Don’t think you can find it in stores.
Fascinating information about the L. Reuteri. I watched the video you did with the Supergut author three times and have ordered everything I need to make the yogurt! Thank you for this invaluable information!
I also watched it. Fascinating and easy to make. I wonder if I could make it in my slow cooker instead. What do you think?
@@jadedelarge be careful with the temperature, anything over 110° will kill the L Reuteri!
Put this guy in the RFK health team asap!
McDonald’s? Lol
Yes.
Annnnnd then render all of Dr’s work completely useless.
I agree.
Please 🙏 let this happen
56 year old male. I’ve lifted weights consistently since I was 15. I follow a mostly carnivore diet and I also hike every week.
In bed by 9pm up by 530am.
Do this consistently and your life will improve.
I totally agree. 77 year old male on carnivore diet. Walk a mile almost every day, lift weights three times a week. Never smoked and hardly ever drink. Haven’t had a cold in over 30 years, BP 112/70, last time in hospital I was being born. And ALL body parts function as intended. No jabs also.
Truth!!
Yes carnivore diet. Beef, eggs, sardines, butter. Calisthenics and lift weights. Sarcopenia is a real problem as you age.
@@jaya.0069that last one is a biggg deal 😅
My recovery time has dramatically improved since I lost my previous work contract (😕 I may end up retiring) because I’ve improved my sleep. I used to get up at 5AM, and now I get up a couple hours later. Of course, it’s easier fall into the trap of staying up later.
63 yo male. I was 88kg with a pot belly, went down to 67 kg as a vegan but lost so much muscle.
Started gym and added quality protein , living healthy keto lifestyle . Now 73kg with a ripping 6 pack and feeling great. Thanks dr berg I follow you religiously
So glad you mentioned L reuteri. WHY? By learning how and what I needed to make this culture…
and then actually doing it: This simple addition to my daily diet has made the biggest difference
relevant to any supplement or food I have yet to introduce. Seriously, this easy to make dairy
culture is a true game changer. One example: I am almost 75. Over the years I have become very
sluggish both in elimination and energy. I tried many natural and pharmaceutical products but
nothing helped in the long term. Via Youtube I learned through Dr. William Davis – the wonderful
health benefits of L reuteri. Yes, consuming it has made that much of a difference!! I cannot
recommend enough at least learning about it through Dr Davis’ Youtube lectures and interviews.
Both Dr(s) Berg and Davis are gifts to this planet – I, for one, stand in complete gratitude!!!!!!!
Im turning 49 and just started lifting weights again after I’ve lost quite abit of muscle over last few yrs. Just in 2 months I’ve put almost all of it back on. Muscle memory is awesome
Wow super! Me too after almost 2.5 years…. Any good pointers or supplements, advice?
awesome
Wow that’s impressive. Looking to increase my muscle too. Any other useful tips (food, supplements etc) to help aside lifting weights?
Same
@@titaniummaster1532yes. Tons of protein and 50-100 carbs max a day unless you’re on keto and are also wanted to lose weight as you add muscle and tone. Push-ups are huge and definitely leg presses. Two main free things that tone your upper and lower body areas
I’m 68 . After being a couch potato for over 15 years, I’d had enough. I had ballooned to 227 lbs (6’1″) and was ‘skinny fat’ at 40% bodyfat. I hit the gym, taking it slowly, doing 30 minutes of cardio then stretching/lifting weights (progressive overload). I did a 16/8 intermittent fasting as well. The first thing that happened was my belly began to shrink. About 2 1/2 years later, I am currently at 195 lbs and 16% bodyfat, my muscle mass increased dramatically. I was told my muscle mass is that of a 35 year old athlete. I actually have a ‘6-pack’ for the first time in my life. I feel like I’m in my 30’s. I am able to do things in the gym that most 30 years old cannot do. I feel better, look better than ever before in my life. It’s not unusual for me to get compliments on my physique from both men and women, something that never happened before. It has helped every facet of my life. I don’t feel deprived, as I eat whatever I want, just in moderation. The rewards are great, but only if you have discipline and determination in equal amounts. Like the NIKE ad says, “Just DO it’!
