Fried Cauliflower “Chicken” | Vegan Soul Food

RECIPE BELOW…

I call this fried cauliflower "chicken" because the recipe is based on southern fried chicken. It's so much better than the real stuff: juicy and delicious, no animals harmed, and much healthier for you and the environment!!
Shout out to Edgy Veg for the hot sauce inspiration 👅

FRIED CAULIFLOWER "CHICKEN" RECIPE updated recipe on my blog:
Makes 4 servings

1 ½ tablespoons ground flaxseed plus ¼ cup water
1 cup all purpose flour
½ teaspoon salt
½ teaspoon cayenne pepper
½ teaspoon white pepper
½ teaspoon onion powder
½ teaspoon garlic powder
½ teaspoon sweet or smoked paprika
¼ teaspoon Old Bay seasoning
1 tablespoon nutritional yeast
⅓ cup hot sauce
1 tablespoon Dijon mustard
5 cups safflower oil, or other frying oil
1 large head of cauliflower, cut into large florets

In a small bowl combine the ground flaxseed with ¼ cup water, stir well and set it aside to thicken for at least 3 minutes.

In a medium-sized mixing bowl combine the flour, salt, cayenne pepper, white pepper, onion powder, garlic powder, paprika, Old Bay, and nutritional yeast.

Into the bowl with the flax mixture add the hot sauce and Dijon mustard and whisk until creamy.

Preheat oil for frying in a large dutch oven or fryer. It should be around 350°.

Use one hand to carefully dip a cauliflower floret into the wet mixture, then drop it into the flour mixture. Use your other hand (it should be dry) to coat it completely. Dip it back into the flax mixture, and again into the dry mixture, keeping one hand devoted to wet and one to dry.

Carefully lower the twice coated cauliflower into the hot oil. Repeat with remaining cauliflower until you can’t fit any more into the pot. Cook for about 4-5 minutes, until the pieces are golden.

Transfer fried cauliflower to a large plate covered with paper towel to absorb excess oil. Continue to cook the remaining cauliflower.

Serve hot 😛

Cauliflower is so versatile! I ate a lot of fried chicken growing up lol. I had no clue it was just coated with flour like that — I thought it was some sort of special batter but this looks so easy I have to try it. 🙂 And that is my kind of salad for sure!

Girl you’re about to make me go vegan. I didn’t thinkIi’d be able to go vegan bc I didn’t think I’d be able to survive lol. I know vegans don’t only eat nuts and berries but you really have to be creative to feel satisfied. Especially coming from an ethnic culture where meat goes hand in hand with the foods. Your videos are really encouraging—give me hope!

Jenipher Rowry I completely agree that minimizing an issue is better than ignoring it. But I also stand by my statement that all natural beats mostly natural. I know minimally feeding of cancer and completely minimizing your chances through a full vegan diet may not seem like a big deal to you. But for those who want to lower their chances, (percentage wise) that 10 percent would be enough to make an adjustment.

You. An go plant based and have 90% of your food vegan. It helped my father loose over 30 lbs and come off his blood pressure meds.

    • Kristie Mao on May 27, 2018 at 10:16 am

People still get cancer even while being a vegan. It’s partly genetics and other factors. Diet plays a role, but it doesn’t prevent all cancers. Linda McCartney was a vegan (and ate organic foods) and still developed and died from breast cancer. It won’t prevent all cancers.

So an hour ago at 10 pm I saw your video. I immediately hopped out of bed determined to make this recipe but i didn’t have hot sauce or Dijon mustard so i had to improvise. When I tell you that those cauliflower wings were so good 😋. I had to talk to myself so I could save it for my lunch tomorrow. I wanted to eat all of them

    • Dulce Rissa on March 2, 2018 at 2:02 am

I can give up meat it’s the milk and cheese that’s keeping me from going vegan :(.

    • S. Israel on March 9, 2018 at 12:58 am

Dairy is a lesser evil so it seems. Milk has a large percentage of puss and blood in it, and cheese is the same just moldy and solidified.

    • Loren Wit on March 24, 2018 at 6:49 pm

Dulce Rissa, try Ripple Milk and Love Your Heart and Daiya brand cheeses

    • lynej2011 on April 24, 2018 at 9:18 pm

BetterFindBeckyWith TheGoatHair I think you just helped me get over my cheese addiction. The milk part grossed me out.

I know this video is old but I made it yesterday and soooo good and flavorful! The double batter really makes it and the flax egg is perfect for this. 🙏🏾

  14. Janet Wunder on April 19, 2020 at 10:48 pm

I just finished making your cauliflower “chicken.” I had to double the flour mixture and the wet mixture to coat all the cauliflower. Not a complaint, just a mention. I also had some baby bella mushrooms, so I fried them with the mixture. Delicious. Thank you.

  15. Goddess 999 on June 10, 2020 at 5:15 pm

Since becoming a vegan in January, this is the first fried dish that I’ve had. Omg!! This recipe is a game changer! I am not a fan of cauliflower but believe me, this was amazing and I can’t wait to make it again. Friends, vegan food is NOT boring!!

  17. T McDougal on July 14, 2020 at 12:52 pm

Tried this recipe with a few substitutes. Delicious!!!! Too much oil with frying though, and took so many pieces of paper towel to drain. I considered baking but didn’t know how that would turn out. Comments say just as good so I’ll try next time. SO GOOD! 😋😍👍

  18. Dee Richardson on July 24, 2020 at 1:47 am
