Today, we’re going to talk about poop shape and color, and address gut warning signs in your stool. Normal poop should be brown and sausage-shaped. Small, hard, pellet-shaped poop indicates that something may be wrong higher up in the digestive tract.

Soft stool indicates that you may have some missing microbes or food allergies. Pathogens can cause loose stool as your body tries to quickly eliminate them. Unfortunately, with diarrhea and liquid stool, good bacteria are also eliminated. Consume kefir or yogurt with blackberries to restore the good bacteria in your digestive tract.

Thin, pencil or cigar-shaped stool signifies a problem in the colon. This could mean the colon is impacted, you have many polyps, or there’s some obstruction in the bowels. You’d want to get this checked by a medical professional.

Normal stools should be brown in color. If you have a problem with your liver or you have thickened bile or bile sludge in the bile ducts, your poop will be light-colored or gray. Floating stool that is also light-colored further confirms this problem.

If your problem is linked to the pancreas, your stool will have a bad odor and may appear greasy. Rarely, this could be associated with cancer, but most of the time, it is caused by an overworked pancreas.

Black stool is often a sign of something more serious, usually caused by oxidized blood. Blueberries and blackberries can also cause black stool.

Beets can cause your stool to appear red. Hemorrhoids can cause red stool due to fresh blood. Collinsonia root is an excellent remedy for hemorrhoids. Green stool is usually caused by chlorophyll from vegetable consumption.

It’s not normal to poop once every 2 to 3 days. You should have a bowel movement 1 to 2 times daily.

Intermittent fasting is the most important thing you can do for your digestive tract. Frequent eating is very problematic and never allows your digestive system the chance to reset.

Incomplete digestion usually results from low stomach acid. Betaine hydrochloride is the best remedy for this problem.

I never paid attention to poop. Until I got my first dog at 22. I had to become an expert at understanding poop to keep his health in check. Now as a father during potty training, I am glad to know how to detect issues with my own children. TMI I know, but still so important.

Very true for dogs and cats too. They are fed such horrible pellet diets instead of fresh meat, cooked eggs, raw vegs, cooked fish, fish oil, sardines, and the whole gamut of real food. My rescued dog eats only home made food and is so healthy. I lecture dog owners all the time on the rubbish they feed their best friend.
    Thank you, Dr Berg!

Strange, my cats and dog do pretty good on the better Purina food. You sound like someone who thinks that they are better than others. PS, I don’t recall fish being on a dogs diet and I don’t recall ever seeing videos of wolves, foxes, coyotes eating vegetables.

    • @margareth1504 on July 19, 2025 at 11:36 am

We do too. We make the pet food at home. We make the treats as well now. We stopped using pure liver treats (it was the only one without a sugar). We now thinly slice a mostly frozen chicken breast and airfry the slices till golden then dehydrate for 8 hours or so. They have kept crisp and hard in a jar in the fridge for about two weeks till all gone.

One time we used dog pellets and the red dye was visible in the fur, and the dog was coughing. Since quitting that never coughed again. Early days we bought pet food and the dog never ate it until hours later would slowly stroll over as if to say oh well it’s this or nothing. Since making all home made meals the dog is always keen to eat that plus other raw treats like lettuce, rocket, raw cabbage, raw carrots, berries, mango, depending on what is in season the dog gets a little of those things.

  5. @HealthySeniorOfficial on July 19, 2025 at 10:28 am

    My notes about poop says:

    • Normal: brown, sausage-shaped
    • Hard pellets: constipation
    • Soft/mushy: missing microbes
    • Thin/pencil-like: see a doctor
    • Light/gray: liver/gallbladder issue
    • Black: harmless; from blackberries, or serious sign for the stomach
    • Red: harmless; from beats or serious sign; colon bleeding
    • Green: from leafy greens

    Main lesson: Fasting resets everything.

    Many thanks Dr. Berg! ❤

Bloating after meals, strange stool changes, constant discomfort, it all felt random until I started connecting it back to what I was putting in my body. This video nails how often we overlook obvious signs. What really made things click for me was reading Youth Protocol by Dr. Tessa . It broke down gut health in a way that finally made sense, especially how modern habits silently wreck digestion. I started applying a few things from it like time-restricted eating and adding fermented foods and within weeks, everything shifted. It’s wild how your body can actually feel lighter when it’s not constantly fighting.

    • @Lexce.paahui on July 19, 2025 at 12:06 pm

I’ve been through something similar things like bloating, weird digestion patterns, feeling tired after meals… I used to brush it off until I started making small changes and finally saw how much better my body could feel. It’s wild how many of us normalize stuff that’s actually our gut trying to signal something’s off. Glad you brought this up.

Fasting Saved my colon! It became infected from an allergic reaction and I got an ulcer. I fasted and that allowed it to heal so I didn’t have to get an ostomy bag. Thank You Dr Berg!!! 💝

I’m curious to how long you fasted for?

  17. @HealthyAging.60 on July 19, 2025 at 2:47 pm

After watching the full video, I realized 3 key insights:

1⃣ The shape of your stool is an early signal of gut health—issues like microbiome imbalance, inflammation, or even colon blockage.
2⃣ The color reveals what’s happening with your liver, gallbladder, and pancreas. Pale, floating, or black stool = red flags.
3⃣ Intermittent fasting and less frequent eating give your digestive system the reset it desperately needs.

💡 It’s rare to find a video that makes poop both educational and entertaining. Great job, Dr. Berg!

  18. @CookChef-oz4bc on July 19, 2025 at 2:57 pm

I remember friends and family and especially doctor’s telling me do not do Keto fasting diet. It’s not safe for people especially with heart and diabetes problem, how are you going to eat fats and red meats, eggs and especially how are you going to take your medicine if you are fasting without any food. What about your A1c and ETC. I’m not having anyone open heart surgery because 2 of the heart surgery wasn’t fun . I couldn’t see my taking 22 different types of pills and 4 shots , nurses coming to the house , having 7 different doctors anymore. Dr Eric Berg took care of all of my health problems 4 years ago and still blessed today AMEN.

🥴 My gut was a mess — constant discomfort, irregular bathroom habits, nothing felt right. I tried fiber, teas, fasting — no real change. Then someone in a digestion thread suggested the Eat to Burn Protocol (by Alex Blake). It reset everything. I’ve lost 30 lbs and my gut feels calm, regular, and honestly… finally normal again.
