If you consume too much of this herb, it can cause you to retain sodium and flush potassium. You could also experience muscle cramps and heart arrhythmias!

Licorice is commonly consumed in tea and candy, and some people take licorice root for adrenal health. Licorice contains a compound called glycyrrhizin, which blocks an enzyme in your body that protects you from producing too much cortisol. When you don’t have this enzyme, cortisol rises.

Our bodies are designed to retain sodium because sodium hasn’t always been readily available. Today, we get plenty of sodium and not enough potassium. You need 4700 mg of potassium per day, a key electrolyte for heart health. It also helps generate energy in the nerves and muscles, protects against blood sugar issues, and helps store glycogen in your liver.

Licorice supplements should not be taken daily, especially if you’re older, have high blood pressure, or are on certain medications like diuretics or Prednisone. Two cups of licorice tea per day may be enough to start shifting your body's electrolyte balance. Similarly, 100 mg of licorice candy daily for 2 weeks can also be problematic. One dose is not dangerous, but chronic low doses of licorice can build up in the body.

Natural remedies are very powerful but not always completely safe for everyone. Licorice has been used for thousands of years as a remedy for ulcers, coughs, inflammation, infections, and more. DGL is a type of licorice without glycyrrhizin that can provide the benefits of licorice without affecting your blood pressure.

If you’re having negative side effects from taking licorice, simply stop taking it and your symptoms should resolve. Most natural remedies can be very beneficial, and negative side effects are generally rare.

Holy moly. The wife loves liquorice and bought some the other day and we’ve eaten a couple of sticks over a few days. I was looking at consuming each day but checked first and the information is eat it in moderation…and then this pops ups😱😱😱

    • @fester16100 on January 29, 2026 at 12:16 pm

      Most is toxic read lable.

    • @leecromer3289 on January 29, 2026 at 12:21 pm

@fester16100yeah bet you read every label of everything you used to consume without question when you was a kid🙄🙄🙄

    • @Nanmoses2023 on January 29, 2026 at 2:13 pm

Betty White said she ate licorice every day of her life. She lived to be 99 and would have lived longer if she had not taken the COVID vaccine. She said that licorice was her weakness. She ate strawberry. You can research her and learn about her love for licorice, vodka, and hotdogs. When I was young, there were a few of my older neighbors who ate licorice and whorehound candy and lived into their 90s.

    • @OG_Bearcat on January 29, 2026 at 2:34 pm

There’s your sign!! Seriously! God may be telling you something! Get your bloodwork done. 😊

    • @SpiritChild9999 on January 29, 2026 at 2:51 pm

@OG_BearcatStop trying to scare the person.
If they ate it and don’t feel any different they are perfectly okay.
They know now to just eat in moderation or do away with it all together.

  5. @lkcl on January 29, 2026 at 11:14 am

yep in the Netherlands liquorice salty (not sweet) confectionary is traditional, so is well-known there as something to avoid if you have heart problems.

    • @arwenwestrop5404 on January 29, 2026 at 12:23 pm

When I was pregnant with my second daughter and fainted in the hospital after a check up, it turned out that my blood pressure was so low, that the lower value couldn’t even be determined. Remedy? Eat liquorice every day of the rest of your pregnancy! And it worked. My blood pressure regulated and I was fine, unless I decided that I’d go without the liquorice for a couple of days. My blood pressure would drop again and I would immediately send my husband out for more of that salty black stuff! Wow am I grateful that I love it! 😅

HI Dr. Berg, I’m Jay from Canada and I just wanted to send you warm wishes and thank you for all of the most wonderful information that you have given us all out in the world. I can honestly say that you have helped me change my life in so many ways and I am truly greatful to you. I look to you everyday for inspiration, and you really have a way of putting things across as to not make people feel ashamed or less confident about themselves, in fact it’s quite the opposite. I hope that one day I can meet you in person to thank you! I recently got back into modelling at 55. I worked as a model in the 90s and never really thought I could get back to do it. I love it and I owe a lot to you for helping guide me back to amazing mind, body, and spirit! You are a kind man and I just wanted you to know that! All the best….Jay

  10. @DonJohnson-t2b on January 29, 2026 at 11:44 am

It’s a little bit funny when you tell your doctor you haven’t been taking no medication he prescribed. Like cholesterol, gout, blood pressure and heartburn medications. Because I am doing keto fasting diet and just looking at my labs results keto diet is the best things for me.

    • @billbradley2480 on January 29, 2026 at 12:01 pm

I haven’t been to a Dr in years. No meds. I don’t support big pharmaceutical.
I haven’t even had a winter cold in years either because I detox my body every 3 months.

    • @starkefir57 on January 29, 2026 at 12:22 pm

      ❤ Good for you

    • @barbarabrooks-f4l on January 29, 2026 at 12:48 pm

      Blessings

  11. @donrundy3767 on January 29, 2026 at 11:53 am

❤ Sugar and carbs are a deadly combo for many. I’ve been there with type 2 diabetes, consuming sweets and starches, including ‘sugar-free’ options. But once I started reading labels and educating myself, I found a way to manage it. Cauliflower is my go-to over rice, even brown or wild rice, which are still carbs. A positive mindset helps, and I’m thankful for each day. Keto fasting, walking, and staying active are my keys to wellness. God is good! 🙏

    • @Hopeful-w7h on January 29, 2026 at 2:08 pm

      Not all licorice is sweet.

  12. @farshadmn4273 on January 29, 2026 at 11:56 am

Licorice is one of the most widely used herbs in Iran, particularly for supporting the digestive system.😉

  13. @smailloux67 on January 29, 2026 at 12:14 pm

There is an herb catnip or skullcap that gives me an extra systole.

  16. @barbarabrooks-f4l on January 29, 2026 at 12:48 pm

The fact that we get free medical videos on YouTube is truly a gift. Thank you Dr. Berg.

    • @cej.2615 on January 29, 2026 at 12:54 pm

      True 😊

    • @lesliereynolds4492 on January 29, 2026 at 1:18 pm

Yes we do not get any of this from our doctors because many do not investigate just prescribed medicine that causes side effects. I do not fill them till I google what happens with the medication. One time it said always take in front of a doctor cause it could kill you and I was not told that by my doctor. What I had was not worth the risk, cured it thru Dr. Berg. Dr. berg is mostly my doctor on YouTube.

    • @donrundy3767 on January 29, 2026 at 2:28 pm

      Amen to that

    • @micchristi8533 on January 29, 2026 at 3:59 pm

The best thing about the internet…free health info! Our parents didn’t know most of this stuff pre-internet

    • @liberpater1342 on January 29, 2026 at 4:49 pm

So, pay it forward. He sells decent supplements as well. His vitamin C is NOT the synthetic ascorbic acid, for example. I’m not saying they are always the cheapest, however, what is the free information he gives worth?

  17. @pete-manley on January 29, 2026 at 1:24 pm

Dr Berg deserves a Nobel Prize.

    • @DrMuhammadTahirSiddique on January 29, 2026 at 3:23 pm

      Absolutely

    • @paul756uk2 on January 29, 2026 at 6:26 pm

Do you think he would want to be associated with the previous criminals that received it?

    • @pete-manley on January 29, 2026 at 6:33 pm

@paul756uk2Good point. However, originally the award went to people who deserved it (Marie Curie, Einstein etc) and Dr Berg deserves to be recognised beyond the confines of YouTube. Kind Regards.
