Are our doctors lying to us? With Dr. Ken Berry, MD — Diet Doctor Podcast

All DD podcasts:
Dr. Ken Berry wants us all to be aware that much of what our doctors say may be a lie. Maybe not an outright malicious lie, but much of what "we" believe in medicine can be traced back to word-of-mouth teachings without a scientific basis. In his book, "Lies My Doctor Told Me" he uncovers the most common of these misconceptions. He also shares his story how he learned the power of a ketogenic diet and how that has revolutionized his ability to help his patients. Dr. Berry has an open and honest approach and pulls no punches. That's one reason why he is always informative and entertaining!

Dr. Berry, << truly a Frontline worker Thank you so much for your service! This brings tears 😢, I'm so tired of dogma and seeing people, including myself, hurting, sick and in pain. Much love to you and sweet Neisha and baby Berry, Jen, RN

Follow you as well. The general mill video on Cheerios was absolutely mind altering and life changing. Keep up what you’re doing.

My cardiologist wasn’t lying to me regarding my high blood pressure, he just didn’t know what was causing it, nor did he care. Meds were his answer. I found this unacceptable, and fired him, so to speak. On my own, I had to determine what the problem was. Diet was the issue, and sugar was the culprit. I eliminated all sugar, and cut way back on grains. With my insulin under control, my BP came down to normal range. No meds whatsoever. My former doctor would have had me on drugs for the rest if my life. 40 years of chemicals in my body? No thanks. The Internet has its benefits ; ).

I make garlic tea and drink.

    • Are Two Dee Too on September 11, 2022 at 6:30 pm

@Skinny Dee Yeah, but it’s their job to know and otherwise find out. It’s inexcusable. Between this and the virus I will never trust doctors again without doing my own research. The internet does indeed have its benefits. Mid-thirties my metabolism started to slow down a bit, 4 weeks and 5 Kgs above my normal weight later I had realized my diet had to change and what had to change in it. It’s not that hard…

    • Skinny Dee on September 11, 2022 at 8:18 pm

      matsfreedom,
You’re so right the internet do have its benefit!

I lost my mother to diabetes and dialysis. I lost my 59 year old husband to diabetes and stroke. If I had known then what I know now, they might both still be here. Thank you Dr Berry! I plan to be here a while longer.

    • Hobo On Wheels on August 15, 2022 at 3:42 pm

We have been the victims of an education system funded by industry, grains and milk are the highest paid farming practices. We do the best with the knowledge we have, I brought my kids up on milk and grains, their all overweight, but still following old information, and eat junk food, its my 6 year old granddaughter I hope to educate better before she loses her new teeth and becomes overweight.😉

    • Lamz on August 15, 2022 at 4:51 pm

@Hobo On Wheels Unfortunately the 6 year old will have to eat the food her parents feed her. It’s frustrating, sometimes. I hope she listens to granny.

    • Joan Halcomb on August 27, 2022 at 4:15 am

I had this same conversation a couple of weeks ago. I lost 35 lbs and kicked some health problems.
I can think of at least 5 family members who might still be here if we had known. Not to mention decades I’ve spent suffering in ignorance

    • Amy Feigt on September 6, 2022 at 1:54 am

losing my grandmother to diabetes related strokes (plus vision loss & dementia) is what spurred me into finding a better way when i too was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes. I makes me mad when i think of the loss & suffering that could have been avoided, but all we can do now is move forward & encourage those we love to start getting healthier as well!

They can toss that food pyramid thing in the trash that we all were told was the dietary bible to good health. Dr Barry makes total sense. Been on keto for a month and feel unbelievable, lost weight, skin conditions have cleared up , blood pressure down, breathing is finally clear. I’m 65 and haven’t felt this good in 40 yrs.

    • Debbie Taylor on February 17, 2020 at 9:49 pm

Can’t believe they still tell us to go by this outdated food pyramid .

    • Debra, RN on November 1, 2022 at 10:53 pm

      Omg, that pyramid!!! 😱
All that bread , fruit, and grains!

    • bible bill on November 18, 2022 at 6:07 pm

  8. JulietteRomeo on January 5, 2020 at 2:22 pm

Nurse practitioner here. I work with CKD and dialysis patients. Talk about a sick bunch of patients with multiple medical issues. I do my best to point my patients toward a low carb diet to prevent my CKD patients from needing dialysis and the dialysis patients can be healthier and qualify for transplant. Keep preaching. You’re saving lives, Dr. Berry, Dr. Fung, and the entire Diet Doctor team.

    • Alaine Pare on November 20, 2022 at 4:50 pm

@bible bill listen to The Dr address protein and the kidneys…..Good information..

    • Gina Sigman on November 25, 2022 at 7:07 am

RN here. I worked on a dialysis unit back in the 90s. I know what you’re talking about. Proper diet can prevent this misery.

    • Dubravka Zirojevic on November 25, 2022 at 8:27 am

Kidney patient here…FSGS…when diagnosed eGFR was 17%. Was told I would be on dialysis within 2 years at the most. Changed my diet…went gluten free and stabilised my immune system and slowly made changes… no processed foods, went vegan for a year and 80% raw for a year. Stabilised my kidneys at about 38%-42%. Was overweight but happy with my progress. Then about 5 years ago went keto and a couple times for 2 months carnivore.. my kidneys are about 55% . When I initially lost 32kgs my eGFR even reached 60% once and 62% once… then stabilised in mid 50s. Can’t lose last 8 kg, but very happy.

    • Vanessa Goben on November 25, 2022 at 4:17 pm

@Dubravka Zirojevic I am so very happy to hear of your great progress Good job for you listening to your intuitive nature instead of all the doctors and all that trying to keep you on dialysis so they can line their pockets That is the way I feel about it at 55 I believe that it’s time to listen to our body of course with a lot of research in this case it seems like carnivore has been working out way better for you than the other alternatives you tried Good job I’m very inspired by your story. Oh by the way since I’ve been on carnivore for 3 months now my current kidney status is now at a 3b when before the carnivore , I was at a four. Let’s keep each other updated excited about this.

    • Vanessa Goben on November 25, 2022 at 5:27 pm

@Nancy Baker I hear you Nancy I too am doing the same listening to my intuition in my body’s needs not to the doctors who need to line their pockets definitely have done a lot of massive research on this subject and took My stage 4 kidney functioning up to a 3B within 3 months of going carnivore. No longer do I have high glucose readings they are in the mid ’80s now before they were like 125 so despite the doctors approach I am being my own doctor in this case.

  9. Tamika Ford on July 14, 2020 at 3:12 am

I love the fact that Dr. Berry does not speak from notes or being coached in anyway. His content is the most authentic that I’ve heard yet.

  10. Jim Smits on June 30, 2021 at 12:53 am

After listening to dr Berry for a month I started the carnivore diet. I felt confident in what he said and taught. I’ve lost 25 lbs in 2 1/2 months. Thank you dr Berry for being intellectually honest with yourself and the public.

    • Debra, RN on November 1, 2022 at 10:50 pm

AND I bet you don’t feel hungry!!
That’s what my friends (most of them medical professionals) don’t believe! I tell them, “The fewer Carbs you eat, the less hunger you have.”
I’ve maintained a 55# loss for three years, feel great and rarely hungry. I can ignore the frequent pizza and potlucks at work, no problem.

  11. Victoria Randazzo on August 11, 2022 at 9:44 pm

As an RN in the USA, I laughed out loud when Dr. Berry said “before we can change a treatment paradigm, all the old guys need to die.” He is so right.

    • Charles Tait on December 2, 2022 at 12:27 pm

Nurses are there to prevent doctors from killing the patients!

      @Charles Tait pretty much…lol.

    • Doseofreality420 Marianetti on December 10, 2022 at 3:15 am

Doesn’t seem like it would help knowing what we know today about cancel culture, censorship, big pharma and the hijacking of our education system. The new generation of doctors are programmed to follow protocols and be completely hands off and disinterested in getting to know patients personally and developing a relationship.

    • Sanjay Biswas on December 12, 2022 at 6:38 am

You are a fucking Moron. Your RN thing is cancelled. My family are scientist at Stanford and study Lipid Metabolism. If you cannot describe the 37 Steps of Cholesterol synthesis you have no idea. What is your RN number? I will launch a formal complaint.

  12. JC Szot on October 9, 2022 at 12:50 pm

Poor Dr. Atkins. He took so much abuse from his peers when he told his patients to eat bacon and eggs. He’s probably up there shaking his head. He had the right idea all those years ago. Thank you, Dr. Berry for being such a medical warrior!

    • bible bill on November 18, 2022 at 6:13 pm

He died from his own teachings got dizzy fell hit his head on sidewalk . Atkins Carnivore Keto are wrong google “body’s main source of fuel” . Tell me what it says . Diet should be mainly whole grains fruits/ veg not meats . Meats[ high protein] will ruin your kidneys .

  13. Holli Standridge on December 3, 2022 at 4:06 pm

I have no gallbladder and I’m pretty sure my high carb diet caused that. I’m now ketovore (carneto?) and working my way to full carnivore. I’ve figured out that many keto approved foods like almonds, broccoli, and Brussels sprouts are not my friends. Tomatoes seem fine. Garlic seems fine. So far, coconut seems fine. Mushrooms are the devil for me!
I’m 53 but people say I look between 35-40-ish. When I was 32 the bottom fell out for me and I started a long journey of chronic pain until I discovered keto in 2018. Dr. Berry was integral in that. I fell off during the holidays the first year and it was a real struggle to get back on even though I’d been thriving for the last 7 months. Thank God I found my way back 2 years ago and I’m beginning to thrive again. The only pain I feel today is from a spinal stenosis which causes pain down my legs that is probably the result of a lifetime of high carb eating.
Now I watch my daughter feed her kids what is considered healthy but let’s them snack at will on snack cakes, otter pops, and donuts. It breaks my heart that she doesn’t listen that child 2 struggles with reading most likely because of what he eats.

  14. Chezky on December 4, 2022 at 3:01 pm

Thank you so much for this! I’ve been obese most my life. I’ve hit the gym and had a nutritionist take care of me but nothing worked! Diets would leave me miserable and still unhealthy. I’m immediately starting this approach. Again, thank you.❤

  15. Rebecca Archer on December 7, 2022 at 6:27 pm

I have my own “miracle” story in my health, (no more fibromyalgia etc) but even more impactful than that is my type 1 diabetic husband’s Miracle Story on the Carnivore Diet! His blood sugars are much more stable, going from 80+ units of insulin/day down to 20! No more acid reflux. No more stage 1 kidney disease. No more dry eye! Off all blood pressure meds. He recently weaned off statins! All with his doctor’s OK. (Doctor’s wife’s RA is in remission on the low carb diet!) I was losing him! Remember the old cartoons of Mr. Magoo? That’s who I lived with! Depressed, fat, sleepy, forgetful, grumpy, closed off. As he was filling his pillbox, he recently exclaimed, “Wow! I take so much less medication now!” Also he is 65 lbs thinner! We got the courage to try the Carnivore Diet with him after watching Dr. Berry’s interview with a young type 1 diabetic. Dr. Berry used the term “normalized blood sugars” and I started to cry. I sobbed through the rest of the interview! We had been terrified to start the diet because his diabetic dietician had told him “Low carb is very dangerous! Don’t risk it!” We wish we would have “risked it” years sooner!

  16. Michael on December 8, 2022 at 8:26 am

DR Berry, you could have that interview today, three years later and not change a word..nothing has changed.. great interview, Michael. greeting from Australia

  19. Fedor Petrov on December 10, 2022 at 7:56 am

There are two interesting partially contradicting things about milks in this interview. The first one is his idea about vitamin D in human breast milk if humans live ancestrally appropriate way. That’s definitely true 🙂 The second is – very shortly – “animal milk is not good for humans and is only consumed for ~10k years”. For some people it’s really not good. Firstly, I think raw animal (and human) milk is something that should contain (if mother follows a correct lifestyle) everything necessary – proteins, fats, vitamins, minerals – to build an organism with all its bones, organs and muscles. That’s the positive about milk – not negative. Second, maybe human is exactly the “weasel” who was for hundreds of thousands of years stealing milk from wild animals. It is only around 10k years that people domesticated animals and learned to milk them.

  20. K McMullen on December 11, 2022 at 5:16 am

Talking about the content at 26:00, I agree with him on the dairy. I would go a step further logically and day that dehydrated milk (anything not in liquid form) would actually be worse. There’s so so much unhealthy fat in it.
