Iodine deficiency is becoming incredibly common because most people aren’t getting enough in their food, and chemicals like fluoride and chlorine in the water supply can deplete it. Vegans are at increased risk for iodine deficiency because they aren’t consuming iodine foods such as shellfish, dairy, eggs, and other seafood.

Here are 7 strange iodine deficiency signs to look out for.

1. Outer eyebrow thinning
If the outer third of your eyebrow is thinning, you could have an iodine deficiency.

2. Hair loss
Iodine is vital in ensuring that you have adequate thyroid hormones to support your hair.

3. Hoarseness
This may feel like a lump in your throat due to an enlarged thyroid.

4. Enlarged tongue
Indentations on the outside of the tongue signify an enlarged tongue.

5. Unexplained weight gain
When your thyroid doesn’t have enough iodine, it can slow your metabolism, leading to weight gain.

6. Increased estrogen
Heavy periods, excessive cramping, headaches, and weight gain in the hips all signify increased estrogen. Testosterone may also decrease in both men and women if the thyroid isn’t functioning properly.

7. Lowered IQ
Thyroid function affects many parts of the brain, including the portion responsible for making decisions, problem-solving, attention, focus, creativity, and memory.

Iodine is vital for properly functioning thyroid hormones, which affect every part of the body. Thyroid hormones affect the ovaries and the testicles, regulate estrogen dominance, and help mood and cognitive function.

Hypothyroidism is one of the most common health problems worldwide! Selenium is also essential for the thyroid, especially for conditions like Hashimoto’s hypothyroidism.

Rather than waiting for iodine deficiency symptoms, add the following iodine-rich foods to your diet to help prevent a problem:
•Sea kelp/seaweed
•Shellfish
•Fish from the ocean
•Eggs
•Dairy

Get a high-quality water filter to eliminate chlorine and fluoride in your drinking water!

This video was a turning point in my life; I had no idea how essential iodine is for thyroid health, hormone balance, and cognitive function. The link between iodine deficiency and low IQ is fantastic—especially how it affects children and adults. I will now take the initiative to supplement the iodine

@maryhaney3386 thank god somebody commented on that. Thyroid dysfunction actually is caused by too much iodine, and very very few people come to knowing this. In fact, they visit dctors and doctors prescribe iodine.
Sad thing is, you cannot measure iodine level in your body. Just like magnesium, it can only be ‘seen’ by symptoms. Even though one might have all these symptoms, they don’t mean iodine deficiency

  9. @scratchinjack608 on March 26, 2025 at 11:49 am

This may have been the source of my hyperthyroidism Grave’s Disease: low iodine intake. Now after radioactive iodine treatment killing my thyroid gland and taking Levothyroxine for the rest of my life, not sure how this video plays into that. It is so hard to find reliable info on this. While diet and exercise got my hormone levels (especially testosterone) into the normal range but it is a low normal and wish to enhance it.
Let me just say, I was diagnosed with Grave’s disease in 2016 and feel that I am working real hard to recovery as the doctors did say recovery will be a long haul. I call Grave’s disease a “stupid” ailment because it effects everyone differently and recovery from it is so widely varies.
Nonetheless. Thank you Dr. Berg for highlighting this.

    • @BarBeeHoney on March 26, 2025 at 12:48 pm

What I’ve found thru many years (decade plus) of research is that nearly ALL ailments we suffer from are caused by deficiencies. Drs are only given 1 semester on nutrition. When we have deficiencies, the body may try to pull it from other areas causing other deficiencies or even appear autoimmune. I do not kno what would have cured Graves bc I hav not researched it. But I am sure there is a natural cure as everything we need has been made available to us in its natural form, we’ve just lost that knowledge (maybe with some help). By far, the opposite, hypo-thyroidism is epidemic.

Has anyone heard the old wives’ tale about rubbing iodine on your skin? If the red/rust color disappears relatively quickly, you are deficient.

    • @Mahrimae on March 26, 2025 at 4:50 pm

I forgot about this!! Thank you for mentioning it!!

  14. @StevenPacyna on March 26, 2025 at 1:06 pm

I believe this is true. Last year I went into the doctor for my checkup and the year before I was told that I had a sub clinical hypothyroid condition. Then I went to the store and bought a bottle of iodine and dabbled a couple of drops on my arm and the condition improved year over year. My doctor was surprised.

    • @supertiaj3099 on March 26, 2025 at 3:42 pm

Please tell me more. You just rub iodine on your arm and that increased your iodine level? How often do you do this please?

    • @mmm1691 on March 26, 2025 at 6:04 pm

Some people put it on straight from the bottle, and some buy the swabs with the exact same povidone iodine solution. We paint it on our arms. Some people paint a cross cross pattern on their throat if they start feeling unwell. I usually do it in the morning and leave it on til I take a shower, or if I am home cleaning the house or whatever. The more quickly it disappears, the more of a deficiency you may have.

My daughter was extremely tired for about a year, and she was finally diagnosed with papillary cancer, and had a complete thyroidectomy. Nine of the 11 lymph nodes removed had cancer. The surgery was followed up with radioactive iodine treatment. She is almost 2 years later and we’re still dealing with possible cancer because she has a tumor growing in her thyroid bed. She has had female problems since she was in high school where she had no periodbut she did not have endometriosis, etc. But I’m beginning to think it had a lot to do with her estrogen. She is 44 and it has been a battle.
