Is there a frugal home-testing method to get feedback on whether or not I’m eating more protein than I need? I don’t want to eat too little. Will BUN be reflected also in the urine, or is there a home test not unlike blood glucose? I’d really like to find my personal requirement empirically. Also, would such a test have confounders such as catabolic activity that leads to later anabolism? Primarily, I recall hearing how resistance training can be temporarily catabolic, and that can raise BUN.

PS: Is high BUN with adequate protein inevitable with age, given that we don’t process protein as well?

I’m going through nursing college, it’s really hard to keep my mouth shut on all of this. Thank you for all of your excellent videos

    • Georgia on April 7, 2023 at 1:41 pm

@Austin Harris Why don’t you use the medical literature as your back-up then? There are studies which confirm what it is said here and you should show them as your evidence, not show YouTube videos.

    • dita4911 on April 7, 2023 at 2:33 pm

@Diane D he will be seen as a black sheep. Let him keep quiet. He is learning there ,he is in no position to argue with his teachers.

    • dita4911 on April 7, 2023 at 2:34 pm

@Georgia leave him alone. He is in no position to do that. Students must abide . People will get to the truth when they are ready not when a student challenge them . Pour student will get bad grades.

    • Diane D on April 7, 2023 at 2:52 pm

@dita4911 It’s a discussion, an exchange of ideas, not so much an argument. How you say things matters and there is a way to offer your thoughts/ideas/observations without being confrontational or argumentative in tone. A good teacher would welcome such a discussion, not fear it.

    • Diane D on April 7, 2023 at 2:56 pm

@Georgia Excellent point. A questioning mind should not be seen as a troublemaker. Bringing the studies is good fortification though.

Hey Dr Sten. Today marks 10 weeks no sugar or starchy foods. Tons of green leafy vegetables and healthy fats. I eat between 10:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. and have never felt better. You’re helping me literally turn back the clock on my 54-year-old body.

@dita4911 who’s to say what’s in moderation?! Which differs from one individual to another btw…

    • dita4911 on April 7, 2023 at 4:28 pm

@ScienceEvolvesOneFuneralAtaTime nobody is to say it for others . For me is ok eating greens in moderation
You want to argue here ? Good luck . Argue with others . I have a life .

    • Brenda Ay on April 7, 2023 at 4:53 pm

@Skinny Dee He (or she) only said that they cut out sugar and starch, so that leaves protein and fat.

    • ScienceEvolvesOneFuneralAtaTime on April 7, 2023 at 4:55 pm

@dita4911 then eat yer greens coz if you don’t eat yer greens you can’t have any pudding! How can you have any pudding if you don’t eat yer greens?!?!

    • Scrap & Pallet Man on April 7, 2023 at 6:50 pm

I eat moderate protein. My salads are romaine lettuce, purple cabbage, hard boiled egg, freshly grated cheddar, and plenty of olives and mushrooms.

  8. Kwadwo G on April 7, 2023 at 11:13 am

Thank you for explaining. I was listening to another doctor telling me to always eat breakfast. I can easily skip breakfast without any weakness or fog so I don’t eat breakfast or other meals unless I am hungry. I am just fine.

    • Wendy Swain on April 7, 2023 at 11:28 am

Breakfast is the first meal you eat in the day whether it’s at 6 a.m. 10 a.m. or 4 in the afternoon everyone has a breakfast a break in there fast you fast overnight when you’re sleeping unless you get up all night and eat every couple hours

    • Dr. Sten Ekberg on April 7, 2023 at 11:30 am

Thank you @kwadwog8168. Wow. Amazing. How does that work? LOL 😄

  9. angelfriend on April 7, 2023 at 11:20 am

Thanks for your amazing info Dr. Ekberg! I remember being told to eat cereal…”good breakfast”, and telling my mom how hard it was to stay awake before lunch. I, of course, was chastised for not paying attention. I also spent years with an afternoon “slump” at work. Thank God I no longer eat that way, and do keto/if! I also thank God that you are so fervent about putting all this information out there…so important! Seems you have a calling, and I am so grateful…hope you have a special “3 day”! Thanks again, and God bless!

    • Wendy Swain on April 7, 2023 at 11:27 am

We ate cereal and milk every morning before school I never fell asleep ever

  10. Madison M. on April 7, 2023 at 11:23 am

Would you consider addressing gestational diabetes and the recommendations made to pregnant women to control their blood sugar? I have been told I need to eat around 200 grams of carbs per day. I monitor my blood sugar as well. I would really appreciate your take!

Also, thank you so much for your videos regarding acid reflux. My husband was prescribed harmful medications that didn’t work. He now uses only ACV to address the issue and doesn’t need medication. No more sleepless nights!

    • Dr. Sten Ekberg on April 7, 2023 at 11:55 am

Thank you @madisonm.1646. Gestational just means that during pregnancy you have more of a tendency that is already there. You do not need carbohydrates more than anybody else. How did children get born before we had a bunch of carbs from agriculture? We never had that many carbs. You may need a few more carbs during breast feeding to cover the lactose in the milk, but nowhere near the amounts recommended.

    • Tania L on April 7, 2023 at 5:36 pm

@Dr. Sten Ekberg but still, can you make a video about it? I would really apreciate your thoughful explanation about it. There is much of misinformation about it.

  14. Lostindawind on April 7, 2023 at 1:41 pm

My insulin resistance began with overtraining, which resulted from marathon training followed by Crossfit while eating paleo with 100g carbs per day. I switched to easy exercise with no dietary changes but kept drifting closer to diabetes over a 10-year period.. Stress and perimenopaise likely contributed. I’m doing much better after following advice from this channel. There are many misconceptions about blood sugar, diet, and exercise. I would appreciate more videos on these topics. Thanks, Dr. Ekberg!

    • Little Bird on April 7, 2023 at 4:36 pm

so how you eat, train now?

    • Lostindawind on April 7, 2023 at 5:45 pm

@Little Bird  I eat a Keto diet with a lot of vegetables. I’m still figuring out the training part. I have to be careful not to work out too hard or too long, or my glucose levels increase. Just like a keto macro calculator, I need a fitness calculator!

  15. Mack Rodrigues on April 7, 2023 at 1:48 pm

Dr. Ekberg i started keto after i found your channel im down 45 kg and never felt better. i can honestly say you changed my life. ty so much for all you do ❤

  16. Gregory Adorian on April 7, 2023 at 1:49 pm

I wanted to comment because been following the advice of Dr Ekburg for a while and staying regular sticking to the new diet. Had no way of weighing myself but noticed my jeans had gone from difficult to pull them up over my gut to being loose. Just got a tape measure to use and keep up with how much change is taking place. Lost 3 inches in 6 days. It has been another day or 2 and decided to check again because it looked like my belly had lost more ( which seem impossible because just had my pigout day but kept to the intermittent fasting regime) so I checked and it is another inch gone in that short time even though I give myself a treat by eating out and big platefull of meat dishes and also get a Protein bar at the suppliment shop because I like chocolate treats. Even though I did that yesterday today I measure and lost another inch off my belly. Seems crazy because I have no hunger even though I am intermittent fasting the 16 hour version and just 3 small meals per day but with each I take in some fat, coconut fat or olive oil or butter. Just some fat with each of the 3 meals. I lost so much weight with zero exercise and noticeable each day.

Hi Dr! Thank you for all of your hard work. Thank you for your dedication on equipping us with valuable information about how our body’s functions. In 8 month I’ve lost almost 50 pounds with your guidance. Thank you, I feel I am well equipped to sustain my weight for the rest of my life. You truly care about us❤

  18. ChaseNJohn14 on April 7, 2023 at 3:09 pm

Thank you for sharing your life saving information! I’m 26 and December 15th, 2022 I was 241lbs with no hope for the future. Scrolling through YouTube mindlessly like usual and here pops up one of your fasting videos. Thankfully I clicked on it and got inspired. It gave me so much hope to get healthy and happy mentally and physically again. Fasting, a little bit of working out (your abs workout is awesome!) And changing my diet to eat healthy, get rid of all processed food and very very low if no sugar has saved me. I’m down to 176lbs as of this morning thanks to you doing the work to make all these amazing videos. Thank you so much for helping me get my life back! You are the true champion!

  20. Lynn Pep on April 7, 2023 at 4:16 pm

That is exactly what I was told when I had taken a class in nutrition, “glucose is the brain preferred source of energy “ So much has changed over time, the more we know, the better we’ll do. Thank you for this information.
