Today I'm going to cover the #1 remedy for heartburn, GERD, and acid reflux.

We're told that the cause of acid reflux, heartburn, and GERD is too much acid. But, I've found that rather than the overproduction of acid, these issues are typically caused by an underproduction of acid.

Two main conditions cause low stomach acid: hypochlorhydria and achlorhydria. Symptoms of both these conditions include acid reflux, heartburn, and GERD.

Hydrochloric acid is there to help you break down food, absorb minerals and vitamins, and protect against pathogens. A deficiency in hydrochloric acid can lead to a myriad of health concerns.

One of the side effects of antacids or other acid-suppressing medications is a loss of stomach acid. This can temporarily cause someone to feel better but can lead to other health issues.

Top causes of low stomach acid:
• Hypothyroidism
• Poor diet
• A suppressed immune system
• Antacids
• Low-salt diets
• Potassium deficiency
• Zinc deficiency
• Iodine deficiency
• Eating too frequently

Betaine hydrochloride is the best natural remedy for heartburn, GERD, and acid reflux. However, you shouldn't take it if you have an ulcer, and don't take betaine hydrochloride on an empty stomach. Consuming the Healthy Keto diet® and doing intermittent fasting may also be beneficial.

Amazing! I always argue with my friends regarding this because they always believe the backward ways and thinks that PPI and antacid are the solution for gerd and heartburn. Thank you Dr. Berg for this video. You are really an angel to a lot of people

I used to take 4 Pepsid AC chewables daily. I’ve posted this before but after intermittent fasting, dropping sugar drinks and improving my diet I lost 52 pounds, mostly visceral fat. I can honestly say I have not taken one in 19 months now. In addition to this is the dropping of 4 prescriptions for triglycerides, blood pressure and asthma. I’m pill free and also feel much better. 9.96 million subscribers, almost there!!!

Acid reflux affects everyone any size. So weight isn’t always the problem.

    • Mark White on March 26, 2023 at 10:48 am

@Debra Hewitt Weight is the #1 cause of GERD and obese people have 3X the occurrence. It isn’t always the problem but the most common.

Thanks Doc, my Dad and Grandad suffered from Gerd and both had cancer eventually. Myself on Zantac for years until I found out that its dangerous too. You may have blown the door off a generational family ailment. Will try this, thank you

I’ve been on Zantac for years, just lately after a scope I’ve been told I have active hpylori, maybe your symptoms stem from an underlying condition. Mr. Berg is the best & his knowledge priceless. Keto, IF & cabbage juice is the way to go. Good luck on your recovery & making your body bullet proof.

To me: gerd is very rare: it only occurs when I eat foods that I don’t usually eat, or my digestive system is not used to, like takeaways or junk foods, like when I’m dinning outside, which I rarely do since I’m in keto for a long time. Thanks for the info Dr Berg 🌸

After watching your videos, I suggested this to one of my friend. He got rid of his 15 years acidity GERD problem. This testimonial is for people who suffer with this issue. IT WORKS…!

  9. Schmidteren on March 26, 2023 at 10:39 am

Betaine HCL with pepsin is really helpful. But getting your diaphragm to work properly fixed it completely for me. Stretches both for mobility and strenghtening, and breathing exercises. And try not have bad posture, and be more active. Had extreme issues for a couple of years. These things reversed it. The sphincter is connected to the diaphragm. A weak, tense or damaged diaphragm, and the valve wont close properly.

    • Epic Linkwolf on March 26, 2023 at 4:11 pm

I also take betaine w pepsin before large meals and it helps a lot 👍🏽

I’m currently pregnant and take Betaine HCL with pepsin several times a day!

Listen to this. Hubby in hospital for another problem. He got out and hours later got a blockage. Had to go back to ER 2X. They were going to send him home the second time with flu. I said no, it is a blockage. Head of ER came in, looked at his chart and agreed. Treated him for blockage. That night the nurse came in to give hubby 2 shots. 2nd was a PPI. I said no and He started yelling at me that he gives PPIs to everyone in hospital every night. I was willing to fight him. He gave hubby the shot the night before.. Cause of blockage. If I had not been there, he might have really been blocked up. Hubby is 77 and I knew from Dr. Berg’s videos we need more acid as we age. They did not insist and He went home the next day. He was so weak he could have died. Listen to this man and believe what he says. His info may have saved hubby’s life. Now we both drink Apple cider vinegar light solution with every meal. No more digestive problems for either of us.

    • Joe K on March 26, 2023 at 2:01 pm

You saved your Husband’s life. This information has been out for years. You found it recently through the magic of video/ youtube / Dr Berg … BUT chose to listen, learn and apply. Good job taking health into your own hands and saving a loved one. It’s liberating to say the least. I did it for my Mom. So many people refuse to believe in their abilities to learn and just go ahead and put their cars, homes and bodies into the experts hands. Problem is… not all are true professionals. As a customer, some knowledge is necessary to not get ripped off or killed. Have a bless day

You changed my life six month ago. Been struggeling with heartburn for many years. I am 35 yrs old. No doc or medication helped but then i watched your video about acid reflux and sugar. I stopped eating sugar from sweets and snacks and had NO MORE heartburn at all. Amazing feeling. I was never obese no smoking not much drinking alcohol but i like chocolate snacks and so on. Now i am IF 16/8 sometimes 24 hrs and i am feeling as good as i never could imagine. This video is my opportunity to say THANK YOU DOC❤ much love from germany.

I used to struggle with acid reflux. When I was exercising it was the worse. I accidently cured this by switching to IF and a low carb diet and started exercising towards the end of my daily fast. All the difference in the world. No drugs or supplements needed.

  13. Yankee 🌹 Rose on March 26, 2023 at 11:25 am

I tell my family to take 1-2 tablespoons of apple cider vinegar with a cup of water and it will get rid of their heartburn. Thank you Dr. Berg, Blessed Sunday to all. ✝️❤

    • Who Knows on March 26, 2023 at 4:40 pm

Yes, it works. I told that to my brother he had heartburn for years and after daily ACV intake he got rid of it.

    • brianlawl on March 26, 2023 at 4:53 pm

Idk if I have high or low acid. ACV does provide immediate relief for me but the pain will come back like 40 mins later, also pain stays in stomach does not reach throat..prob a hernia

Dr Berg, I was put on antacids after being diagnosed with a hiatal hernia and my overall health has tanked ever since.
This video explains a lot of what happened to me

    • Pete's workshop on March 26, 2023 at 11:41 am

They tried to put me on lifetime antacids. I declined and did ACV for a month heartburn free ever since.

    • Pp Ss on March 26, 2023 at 2:21 pm

@Pete’s workshop I’ve been with very reluctant to try the ACV route, but I guess I’m gonna have to try it out… You’ve convinced me to try it… 25 years with severe GERD.

    • Seattle Six on March 26, 2023 at 3:01 pm

Started combining fresh lemon juice with ACV and Dr Berg’s Sports Electrolytes this month, very palatable and reminiscent of lemonade

    • Elsy Valle on March 26, 2023 at 6:34 pm

@Pp Ss, you will not only cure the acid reflux but you will help and clean your kidneys and clean your liver too!

68 yo and diagnosed with achalasia which is daily torture unable to hold food/liquids down without regurgitation. Currently facing surgery. Wish Dr. Berg would address this specific topic.

I’ve been living unhealthily lately, my whole body was hurting with muscle aches and stiff neck, back and joint issues etc.
I’ve been binging your videos lately and decided to get back into IF and keto.
I haven’t taken Prilosec in almost 2 weeks and I used to take it every single day of my life since high school. Looks like my GERD is just a bad memory now.

  18. Marlena Cooper on March 26, 2023 at 3:02 pm

Hi Dr. Eric Berg, this information is greatly helpful. I found an older video that you have on this about 4 years ago, and it has helped tremendously and improved my health since I found your information on this long ago. Skin is cleared from acne, no more acid reflex, no more bloating. I also been on the keto diet for a while and followed all your recommendations to a T. It does make a huge difference. Thanks so much.

This man should be given an award! Thank you doctor for your words of wisdom!
Please do a video on Barrett’s esophagus. And any advice on how to treat it would be greatly appreciated.

  20. Claire Hachey on March 26, 2023 at 3:49 pm

Thank you Dr. Berg for another amazing video. Would it be possible to do a video on the danger of prolonged use of PPI’s, particularly the research done linking them (or some of them ) to dementia? Thank you!
