Thank you Dr. Ekberg for all you do. But do to my love for you I have to say that your own health is also very important. So would you please take your own medicine to get rid of your belly fat. I was very impressed with your great body shape however, I’m noticing an increase in your belly. I don’t mean yo offend you just want you stay around much longer and be a good example for great health by following your own great lessons. Stay healthy. Much love. Blessings.

Hello! At time 2:26 you said “140 to 190” but in the graph is written “140 – 160”

    • Daniel Barbour on May 5, 2023 at 3:56 pm

@Use Wisdom Wow, really? Do you REALLY think he ‘doesn’t’ take his own medicine?

    • Nicolas Cereghino on May 5, 2023 at 4:50 pm

What is the difference between a type one diabetes and type two diabetes? And can you eat super foods like fruits and vegetables if you have type two diabetes or type one diabetes?

    • Dave W on May 5, 2023 at 7:19 pm

Hi Dr. You don’t ever include T1 Diabetics in your analyses. Can you do a video like this for T1 Diabetics? And just in general include us so we get your professional opinion of where our BG should be?

    No sugar for a year… Non-fasting glucose was 100,
    now it’s 87 (non-fasting). 🎉
AND I’m not hungry all the time like I used to be! 😃
ANSWER to people asking questions:  I was on an anti-inflammatory diet (paleo) because I had fibromyalgia for about 15 yrs. That’s gone! Then I decided to follow a modified keto diet. It’s been a year now. I eat keto foods but I don’t do the proportions, so I guess it’s not true keto…yet. I no longer eat grains, sugar, legumes, processed foods, and I do have organic whenever possible. I do give in with dairy… and I have meats, veggies, and for fruits I have berries. I have high fat foods. My weight is pretty steady because I’m not doing proprtions of carbs, fats, protiens. Actually, I have gradually lost 15 lbs over the last year.
Here’s what keeps me sane… I have a day during the week when I can have whatever I want. I’m finding over time though that those days are getting healthier as I go along because my food cravings have definitely changed. 🤔 I don’t know if my cholesterol will be ok or not because I’m not doing the proportions yet. I am doing high fat. I was pleasantly surprised when my blood sugar (non-fasting) dropped from 100 (always steady previously) down to 87. 🤔 💭
BONUS: For the first time in my life, I’m not starving in between meals!! Thats huge. I take advantage of that and don’t eat in between meals. I do have coffee ☕ with cream twice a day too.
My body’s food cravings really did change over time.

    • A Microtyger on May 5, 2023 at 4:02 pm

@inmortal009 See my original answer. I edited it for everyone asking about it.

    • A Microtyger on May 5, 2023 at 4:02 pm

@James Kantor Yes.. that’s exactly what I have!

    • Peter Madany on May 5, 2023 at 4:37 pm

@Pip Fruit can be healthy for most people. Metabolism and age can affect how (un)healthy various fruits are.

However, there are several ways to fruit it unhealthy:
      1. Turn in into fruit juice, especially pulp-free fruit juice. (Lemon and lime juices used as flavorings should be just fine.)
      2. Slide it up and pack it in syrup.
      3. Turn it into alcohol.
      4. Get too much sugar from it. High sugar fruits include bananas, grapes, and mangos… Most berries and some melons are low sugar.
      5. Eat fruit that one is allergic or sensitive to.

    • A Microtyger on May 5, 2023 at 4:47 pm

@Pip With fruits, they’ve radically changed since mankind got hold of it. Today’s fruits are packed with high-sugar fructose. The low-sugar fruits these days are berries as they haven’t been modified as much.

    • Pip on May 5, 2023 at 5:06 pm

@A Microtyger Thanks for the info…!

  3. Sean G on May 5, 2023 at 10:34 am

I love what you do. I’ve been recommending your videos widely.
But I do have a quibble. I wish you’d make explicit the *units* in which your various numbers are presented.
Because different labs give results in different units, to interpret our own results wrt yours, we’d often need conversion factors.

    • Laz Arus on May 5, 2023 at 1:11 pm

To convert mg/dL (which Sten normally uses in his presentations) to mmol/l, divide the former by 18.0182 ( 18 is close enough).

      eg. 80-90 mg/dL = 4.44-4.995 mmol/l

This is by far the best explanation I’ve seen/heard on blood sugar/insulin. I’m type 2 diabetic and have been on a zero starch diet since January 2023. My blood sugar has been coming down gradually, my glucose spikes are now minimal as well as the morning Dawn syndrone.

I am so thankful that my part time involves me standing all day and doing manual work. Sometimes there’s some lifting; most times it’s light work. I only sit down when I eat my meal (which is a salad with salmon, no carbs 😊) in my lunch break. I was so unfit when I had a desk job.

  9. Ronald Buss on May 5, 2023 at 11:30 am

I found that not eating lowers my blood sugar to about 80 in about two days. Of course I usually only eat less than two meals a day on average and have cut out my favorite foods which are pizza and cheese cake. One-eighth of a cheese cake raises my blood sugar to about 200 for hours. So, I’m definitely insulin resistant. Instead of salty potato chips I now eat a handful of mostly unsalted nuts. Even two cups of coffee a day makes me want to eat more, and makes me feel sickly most of the time. So I have to abstain from coffee for weeks at a time. I know the coffee industry says it won’t hurt me, but what do they know? I’m a young 77 years old.

This dr. literally saved my life! For 2 yrs now my A1c has been been between 4.9 and 5.3. 2 yrs ago before finding Dr. Eckberg and Dr Ken Berry. My A1c then was 9.5 and i was feeling horrible…..swollen ankles, tired all the time, severe headaches at night. Now at age 64 i feel 30 yrs younger, have lost 78 lbs to date and have more energy than when i was in my 40’s. Other drs did notook at healing but pushing meds. I am off ALL meds now….hbp, statins, metformin and even my thyroid med. ❤

Thank you! That’s me exactly! For example, I woke up yesterday and my fasting BG was 113. After I ate breakfast it came down to 87.

  15. Zawa on May 5, 2023 at 1:11 pm

Such a great video at summarizing glucose and insulin resistance and how they’re impacted by what we eat! I had started a no-sugar May, and it wasn’t going very well, as I ended up eating sugar 5/2 and 5/3. Yesterday was my first sugar-free day, and this video is exactly what I needed! Thank you, Doctor Ekberg! 💗🙏🏻💗

    0:00 – What is normal
5:26 – What causes high blood sugar (Food Intake)
13:56 – What causes high blood sugar (Insulin Resistance)
17:42 – It takes a long time to break it
22:23- How to lower blood sugar

Resuming, If you’re insulin resistant, don’t eat carbs that don’t come from leafy greens and such (mostly water and micronutrients, almost no carbs), fats raises glucose the least, protein also doesn’t raise it nearly as much as carbs, but it’s more than fat, so eat more fat, less carbs and enough protein but not too much, if its too much and your body doesn’t have any more use to it, it’ll become glucose just like a carbohydrate would. Fasting for at least 12-16h per day helps a lot, but the optimal is OMAD, since you’ll only spike insulin once a day. The worst thing you can do is to have a lot of spaced meals, it will only make you hungrier and increase your cravings for junk food, since your insulin will rise everytime you eat something. It is not a quick fix, but it is sure to help your body to work as it should so you won’t have as many health complications down the line. Exercise DOES NOT reduce glucose as many people believe. Go to the gym, work your muscles to failure, walk as much as you want, that won’t be an issue, but don’t try to heal your body through intense cardio sessions, if anything it’ll make your problem worse.

Thank you so much!! I’ve been watching you for a couple of years and always enjoy learning new medical info. As someone with type 2 diabetes, this was the best video I’ve seen on YT. It was comprehensive and easy to understand. I’ve been struggling with controlling my diabetes for the last 4 months and even went on Keto and insulin, yet couldn’t get my A1c below 8.9. (11.9 in January, so still happy, but I want to get off of all meds asap.) This helped to explain why some of my diet and exercise could be actually be hurting instead of helping me. I will try these tips.
